Patented Aug. 25,'11931 A v UNlTED STA TESPAT WILLIAJII DUTTON, OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO vDAVIS @a FURBER MACHINE COMPANY,'OF NORTHVANDOVEB, MASSACHUSETTS, 'A'CORPORATION OF i MASSACHUSETTS Application `filed. itt-[ay `28K,
In Vorder to `give an understanding of the invention I have illustrated in the drawings a selected embodiment thereof which will non7 be described afterwhich the novel features will be pointed out in the appended claim. Y
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a hand card embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a section on Athe linef2-2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary under side view of Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the handle'. The hand card comprises the usual body 1 in the form of a board on one face of which is located a sheet of'card clothing 2 secured to Y` the body and to one edge 0f which is secured a handle indicated generally at 3.
It has been the common practice to make the'body 1 of a piece of board which, of
Y course, is relatively thin and which `is liable to crack or split longitudinally after being used a relatively short time. 'l
The body 1 is made of several plies of wood which are glued together.` In the illustratedv embodiment the body comprises three plies.
4, 5, 6. These various plies, which are pref-l erably made'of wood, are glued together sov as to make a laminated structure `and in doing so I preferably arrange'the grain of the intermediate ply 5 so that it extends at right'4 angles to the grain of the outer plies 4 and 6. Thus it will be seen that the grains of contiguous plies extend transversely to each other.
The body is furtherl made with av slight curvature from the edge 7 to kthe edge 8 and in making the laminated body a coating of glue or other suitable adhesive will be applied to the meetingfaces of the plies and y then they will preferably be pressed firmly together in a press which will give them the desired curved shape. Thus the curved shape is given to the body before Ythe vglue dries with the result that whenthe glue or other adhesive has thoroughly dried the bodywill dancer that the hand of the operator willy 16 have a permanently curved shape and the internal stress of each ply due to this curvature will thereforegbe thev same.

made alittlel thinner atthe'edge7 thanat. the otheredge as shown clearly -inlfigsL 1 and2.` V
The handle a is ofl novel conauctioa n The ply 4 "ifs".
comprisesl a metal section 9, which is secured to the' edge 8 of the body 1 and a wooden Said metal section 9 is l.also formed wit i'- i thetwo flanges 14, 15 between which the edge v 8 of the body is received. The flange 14 overlies the back` face of the body and the flange i Y 15 is on the under face thereof. 4 Said flange 15 is ofless length than the flange 14.and is o received in a recess 16 formed in the under face ofthe body andy ofsuflic-ient depth so that the outer face of the'flange 15 lcomes flush vwith the undervface of the body 1. The
handle is secured to the body by suitable tightened the edge `8 of ythe body is clamped between thetwo flanges 14 and'15 and this tof gether with the rivet 18 which is spaced'some 'distance from the. rivet 17 makes a strong'connection'between the handle and the body.
The metal portion 9 of they handle," is Y formed on its underside with a recess 21 and is provided with a pin 22 Vwhich extends through the handle and across the` recess. l A finger-receiving `loop 23 of flexible material isconnected .to the pin 22, one endof the loop entering 'they recess 21 and encircling.
the operator will be inserted through the loop 23 and said loop provides meansby which the card may be manipulated without slip off the end ofthe handle'. a f y f ,rivets-17, 18, the rivet 17 extending through .lil i `the pin 23. In using the card vthe fingersof 95. i i
While I have illustrated herein a selected embodiment o'l my invention I do not Wish y to be limited to the eonstruetional features shown other than as set forth in the claim.
I claim:
A hand card comprising a body, a handle having a metal section and a wooden section, the metal section presenting two flanges between Which one edge of the body is received, the flange on the buck of the body being longer and Wider than the flange on the front ofthe body. two rivets uniting the longer flange to the body, one of said rivets pas-sing through both flanges, said metal seetion having a recess in its under side, :L pin extending across said recess and a loop of flexible material encircling said pin and through which the fingers of the operators hand may be inserted.
yIn testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
WILLIAM A. DUTTON.
