J. WILLIAM 0. PETE s, .oEo ioAeo, ILLINoIs, Assienoe Tofw IrTLEsEY & PETERS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORNER-PLATES FOR BED-BOTTOM FRAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,035, dated September 12, 1876 application filed October 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known' that I, J. WILLIAM 0. PE- TERS, of Chicago, in the county ofOook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corner-Plates for Bedof which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a bed-bottom provided with my improved cornerplates. Fig; 2 represents the bottom rim of one of the plates when applied to the frame. Fig.3 represents a vertical section through end rail, showing inner side of plate; and Fig. 4 represents a bottom View, a modification in the form of the plate, showing plate attached to the frame.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of my invention is to avoid as much as possible the use-of bolts and nuts for the purpose of attaching the corner-plates to bed-bottom frames, and to render the attachment firm by other means and to that end my invention consists of corner-plates constructed substantially as herein specified.
In the drawing, A represents a bed-bottom, consisting of a frame, to which-is attached a woven-wire fabric or mattress. In this class of bed-bottoms it is essential that the parts of which the frame consists should be firmly united, in order to support the tension of the mattress. This attachment has heretofore been made by means of iron corner-plates constructed to hold the ends of the side rails and end rails together, in connection with bolts and nuts employed for that purpose. I purpose to so vary the construction of the corner-plates that they will more firmly seize the rails than heretofore, and be capable of being made and applied with greater facility.
B and B, are the corner-plates embodying my invention. The plates B B each consist of an outer vertical wall, a, sufficiently high to cover the outer side of the side rails O G, near the ends of the latter, and also to cover the ends of the end rails D D, as shown. a a are inner vertical walls, connected to the walls out by means of the cross-bars c e. In the plates B B this cross-bar and the walls a and a are connected by an end wall, e, and from this wall 0 a short flange, 0, extends horizontally. In the plates B B the wall 0 is absent, and the flange e extends laterally and inwardly from the wall a; but it is immaterial whether the end wall a is employed or not, or whether the flange 0 extends directly from the wall a or from the wall 6, so long as the said flange is arranged to receive the bolt n. In other words, the plates B and B are substantially the same, but may be modified in the manner shown and described. The plates B and B are flanged or lipped, as shown ate and c, to engage the upper and inner face of the end rails. The wall a of the plates B B may also be bent around to engage the rear face of the end rail but it is not essential that it should be so bent; neither is the wall 6 essential.
.In order to unite the rails by means of my improved plates the latter are properly arranged with relation to the ends of the end rails, and are then screwed thereto by means of the screws n n, as shown. They are also attached to this plate by means of the bolt 72/. The side rails are then slipped into the corner-plates, and attached thereto by means of the screws n n.
The screws n n are not absolutely essential, but aid in keeping the end rail in place, and the screws n n aid in preventing the plates from slipping forward on the side rails. I deem it preferable, however, to employ some or all of these screws for the purposes set forth.
The plates herein described are cast in one piece.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The side rails O O and end rails D D, the
latter arranged above the former, in combitheventical walls a and a(, 'united'by= 1iieaI1s and the saidplatesbeingralso-provided with a nation with metal .eornenplates, econsistingpf mil, all substantially asandgfor the -purpqses of a cross plate or bar, the walls a a being specified. adapted to lap the ends of the end rails, and J. WM. G. PETERS. lipped, as shown at 0 and 0, t0 lap the upper Witnesses:
and inner faces, respectively, of the said mils, N. O. GRIDLEY,
.M. M. GRIDLEY.
