This invention relates particularly to an improved holder and carrier for a riveting machine, the object of the holder and carrier being to receive and position a piece of flat material slotted longitudinally thereof and having one end forming a hook, the said holder and carrier also being adapted to position a two-pronged rivet in alignment with the slot in said hooked piece of material, whereby the hooked piece of material may be attached to another piece of material by said rivet through the co-operative action of a driver and anvil with said hooked piece of material and two-pronged rivet interposed therebetween. r
The object of the present embodiment of this invent-ion is to attach a hooked piece of flat material to a moth-proofbag adjacent the opening thereof, whereby the two edges of the bag opening may be held together, the hooked member being slidable upon the rivet whereby it is attached to one side of the bag adjacent the opening.
The invention consists in the improved holder and carrier hereinafter set forth in the specification and particularly pointed outin the claims, and in the combination thereof with a driver and anvil and mechanism to impart a reciprocatory motion to the driver and holder and carrier.

in the drawings, 10 is a holder and carrier slide. A pair of oppositely disposed spring arms 11 and 12 are fastened to the slide 10 by a bolt 13 and nut 14. These spring arms are offset at their lower ends and have fastened to their lower ends a pair of oppositely disposed plates 15 and 16, the plates 15 and 16 being fastened respectively to the spring arms 11 and 12 and interposed therebetween.
The plate 15 is provided in its lower face with a groove 17 which has a recessed or inclined wall 18. The plate 16 also has in its under face a groove 19 with a 'similar'recessed sidewall 20. The two grooves 17 and 19 combine to form'- a guideway 21 which is adapted to receive and hold a flat piece of material 22 which is bent at one end to form a hook 23. The said flat piece of material 22 is provided with a slot 24 extending longitudinally thereof. p
The plates 15 and 16 form a chamber 25 adapted to receive a twopronged rivet 26. The inner faces of the plates 15 and 16 are'recessedto form a pair of oppositely disposed inclined ridges 27 and are spaced apart to 28 respectively, and these inclined ridges suprial 32 and through a disc 33 on the under side of said sheet material and then the prongs 34 of the rivet are clinched by engaging an anvil 35 and are returned into the disc 33, see Fig. 7.
The hooked plate 22 is inserted in the guideway 21 as illustrated in the drawings, by hand, and the said hooked plate is positioned longitudinally thereof with relation to the rivet-driver31 by a stop 36 which is fastened by screws '87 to the plate 16.
The general operation of the mechanism hereinbefore specifically and to some extent in general described is as follows: The twopronged rivets 26 descend the raceway 30 and the lowermost rivet in the raceway enters the chamber 25 between the plates 15 and 16 of the rivet holder, sliding into the chamber 25, and assuming the position illustrated in Fig. 4, the opposite edges of the rivet resting upon the ri-dge's27-and '28 in the plates 15 and 1 6. The hooked plate 22 having been placed in position, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and l, the driver 31 descends and the lower end thereof passes into the chamber 25 and contacts with the top 29 of the rivet 26. The car rier slide and the holder are then pushed down by the driver until the carrier slide engages a stop above the material 32 which is positioned upon the anvil 35, whereupon when the driver descends still further the twopronged rivet will be thrust downwardly in the chamber '25, the two plates 15 and 16 spreading apart to allow the said rivet to pass downward-1y. The prongs of the rivet pass through the slot 24 in the hooked plate 22 and then through the material 32 and through the disc 33 positioned between the material 32 and the anvil 35.
The driver continues to push the rivet downwardly until the prongs 34 are clinched by the anvil 35 into the disc33. During the latter part of the descent of the driver, the hooked plate 22 will be forced out from between the , plates 15 and 16 by the head of the rivet 26 as it is driven downwardly by the driver and thus attached to the upper face of the material 3:2, all as illustrated in Fig. 7 The driver then moves upwardlva-nd the carier slide with the rivet and hooked plate holder also move upwardly being carried upwardly by a spring 38.

E; Perrault, Machine for setting rivets, No. 87 9,895, patented February 25, 1908.
I claim: 7
1. A holder and carrier for a riveting machine having, in combination, a slide, a pair of oppositely disposed spring arms fast to said slide and spaced apart, and a pair of oppositely disposed plates fast to the lower ends of said arms, the under faces of said plates being provided with grooves, which form a guideway adapted to receive and hold a fiat piece of material.

A holder and carrier for a riveting machine having, in combination, a slide, a pair of oppositely disposed spring arms fast to said slide and spaced apart, and a pair of oppositely disposed plates fast to the lower ends of said arms and spaced apart to form a chamber adapted to receive a two-pronged rivet, the inner faces of said plates being recessed to form a pair of oppositely disposed inclined ridges upon which the head of a two-pronged rivet may rest and whereby said rivet is held in an inclined position. A holder and carrier for a riveting machine having, in combination, a slide, a pair of oppositely disposed spring arms fast to said slide and spaced apart, and a pair of oppositely disposed plates fast to the lower ends of said arms, the under faces of said plates being provided with grooves, which form a guideway adapted to receive and hold a flat piece of material, said plates being spaced apart to form a chamber adapted to receive a two-pronged rivet, the inner faces of said plates being recessed to form a pair of oppositely disposed ridges upon which the head of a two-pronged rivet may rest.
4. A holder and carrier for a rivetingimachine having, in combination, a' slide, a pair of oppositely disposed spring arms fast to said slide and spaced apart, a pair ofoppositely disposed plates fast to the lower ends of said arms, the under faces of said plates being provided with grooves, which form a guidcway adapted to receive-and hold a flat piece of material, and astop atone end of said guideway adapted to position said vpiece of material on said holder and carrier.

A holder and carrier for a riveting machine having, in combination, a slide, a pair of oppositely disposed spring arms fast to said slide and spaced apart, anda .pair-ofroppositely disposed plates fast to the lower ends of said arms, the under faces of said plates beingprovided with grooves having-an inclinedside wall, said ,grooves combining to form a guidewayadapted to receive and hold a flat piece of material with its edges abutting against said recessed side Walls.

A holder and carrier for a riveting ma-' chine having, in combination, a slide, a pair of oppositely disposed spring arms fast to said slide and spaced apart, and a pair of oppositely disposed plates fast to the lower ends of said arms, the under faces of said plates being provided with grooves, which combine to form a guideway adapted to receive and hold a flat piece of material with a slot extending longitudinally thereof, said plates being spaced apart to receive a twopronged rivet, the inner faces of said plates being recessed to form a pair of oppositely disposedridges upon which the head of a two-pronged rivet may rest with its prongs positioned in alignment with said slot.
7. A riveting machine having, in combination, a slide, a holder embodying a pair of oppositely disposed plates spring mounted on said slide and recessed to receive a piece of fiat material with a slot extending longitudinally thereof, said holder having a chamber between said plates adapted to receive and position a two-pronged rivet therein with said prongs in alignment with said slot.
