This invention relates to improvements in feed rolls for run repair machinery V-tobe used for repairing runs, dropped stitches, ravels and such like in hosiery, underwear and other knitted goods.
The invention has for one ofits chief ob jects the provision of an efficient and simple repair mechanism which gives greater freedom of movement for the run threads or laddeli-rounds 0f the fabric during the formation of the i'e'pa irloops and thus decreases the tendency to break the-threads due to 'localized straining of said threads whenthe needle dips to take up a loop in the run. Inother words,
my invention provides means whereby runs and the like in knitted fabric are repaired with the least possible strain on the threads whereby it is possible to successfully and efficiently repair runs in fabrics made from threads of yarn of weak tensile strength as well as when made of yarn of high tensile strength.
A further object is to provide a simple, efficient and easily operated apparatus of the nature and purpose herein referred to which is economical of manufacture and reliable in operation on yarns of weak tensile strength such as artificial silk and other fibre, as well as on yarns of high tensile strength such as natural silk and the like.
Other objects of this invention include the modification of the feed roll so as to give greater freedom of movement of the threads which cross the runs in the fabric.
The type of machine to which the present invention is applied and which is an improvement thereon is represented by a construction disclosed in the patent to R. L. Plumley No. 1,708,681 issued April 9, 1929. g Other objects of this invention will appear from the following disclosure and the invention consists substantially in the combination, construction, arrangement and relative location of parts all as will be fully set forth 5 in this specification and pointed out in the claims and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a view in end elevation ofa run repairing machine fitted with my improved A0 feed roll;

The prime object of this invention relates in the construction of a feed roll wherein an enlarged groove is formed so as to provide room in which the repair needle may dip and'atthe same time permit the run threads and fabric to have greater freedom of movement without stretching the threads to a breaking stress. One way of accomplishing this purpose ingeneral is by providing but its one spacer wheel between the inner peripheries of two spaced feed wheels and cutting away apo'rtion' of one of the-feedwheels so as to provide a wider groove in which the re- I pair needle may operate and over which the run threads are stretched. Thewidened drumming space thus formed between the two feed wheels may be formed also in other ways than by cutting away one peripheral portion of one of the feedwheels. Thus, for example, it is possible to space one of the wheels a greater distance from the adjacent feed wheel and adjoiiiing spacer wheel so as to form the widerred groove in that manner; v 7 Referring now to'the drawing, a feed roll 85 9 made in accordanc'ewith my invention is shown. in itsposition on'the usual type ofr'un repair machines such as is illustrated in the Plumley patent above identified. Said feed roll is shown in Fig. 2 having, however, a shield24 removed therefrom for clearness. The feed roll comprises a spacer wheel 10 having teeth projecting slightly above the surface'of the adjacent feed wheel 11 against the 'innei su rface-of which the spacer wheel is held when the parts {are assembled. For the purpose of operating the feed roll a ra tc'het wheel 14 maybe conveniently fastened to the feed wheel 11. A second feed wheel 12 is provided which-differs -from feed wheel 11 in that the width of the peripheral surface is decreased approximately one-third more or less by cutting the peripheral inner edge away as is clearly shown in Fig. 2 at 17. The spacer wheel 12 is held apart from the feed wheel 11 by a collar or its equivalent 13 so as to-form a groove into which the repair needle 22 is adapted to dip in repairing the goods. The outer surface of feed wheel 11 is provided withfeed ribs 15 and a similar construction 16 is found in feed wheel 12 excepting that feed ribs 16 are of less length than in feed wheel 11. This arrangement provides a space between the inner. edges of the feed wheel 12 and the inner edge of the spacer Wheel 10. By this provision the fabric, which is stretched over the wheels while the run is being repaired, is given greater freedom and less strain is exerted on the cross threads as is illustrated by the dotted line 19 and the full line 18 to represent a cross thread of a run. The fabric is held in position by presser foot 20 as is well understood in the art. This presser foot is placed into operative position by the usual hand operated mechanism shown at 28; This mechanism is fully described in the. Plumley patent and it will, therefore, not be necessary to again describe the construction herein.
It is. understood that my improved feed roll can be attached directly to the standard type ofinachine such as the Plumley machine -dis closed in the above identified patent of which there is shown herein the base 25, drive pulley 26, .fly-wheel27, head 28 and associated parts.
l/Vhat I claim is:
1. A feed roll for run repair machines comprising a spacer wheel having teeth on which the threads of a run are spaced and a feed wheel adjacent said spacer wheel, a second feed wheel spaced apart from said spacer wheel, said second feed wheel having an inner peripheral edge cutaway therefrom so as to provide room for the threads of the fabric to be depressed during the repairing operation.

A feed roll for run repair machines comprising two wheels disposed side by side over which the fabric to be repaired may be fed, said wheels'spaced apart to form a well into which the repair needle is adapted to dip, a toothed wheel member, said toothed wheel member having projections extending beyond the outer surface of said feeding wheel for spacing threads of a run to be repaired.
3. A feed roll for run repair machines comprising a toothed wheel for uniformly spacing successive run threads, and feeding means comprising two wheels having roughened prising a toothed wheel for uniforml spacing the successive threads of a run in knitted fabvrics, and feeding means comprising two wheels having roughened peripheries, one of said roughened peripheries being cutaway to provide a free drumming space for the repaired fabric.
5. A feed roll for run repair machines comprising a toothed wheel for uniformly spacing successive run threads, and feeding means comprising two wheels having roughened peripheries, one of said roughened peripheries being wider than the other, said wheel with the narrowed roughened periphery being spaced apart from said toothed run spacing wheel.
6. A run repairing feed roll according to claim 3 characterized by having a single toothed spacer wheel which is adjacent the feeding wheel with the wider periphery.
.7. A run repairing feed roll according to claim 3 characterized by having a free drumming space formed between the toothed spacer wheel which is adjacent the feeding wheelwith the wider periphery and the inner edge of the periphery of the feeding wheel with a narrower periphery.
8. A run repairing feed roll according to claim 3 characterized by having the needle space over which the fabric is stretched for i v8o repair widened by a cutway portion of the periphery of one of the two feeding means.
