EXPANSIQN VALVE l Filed Jn. 1o. 1951 I Patented` Aug. A18,1931 i UNrrED srA'rEs PATENT OFFICE Rasmus 1u. nvm, or onrcneo,l ILLINOIS EXPANSION 'VALVE Application led January 10, 1931. Serial No. 507,899.
My invention relates to expansion valves lows head having an annular portion or for use in refrigerating machines and parflange 22, and a tubular portion 23 that ticularly to -a novel construction having engages the boss. A bellows 24 constructed numerous advantages, that will be pointed in the form of an annulus is secured at one Afr out hereinafter. end to the support 22 and at the lower end 5o Anvobject of my invention is to provide to a floating head having an annular por-V an expansion valve of extreme simplicity and tion 25 and a tubular portion 26 that proof very small size, one that can be cheaply jects upwardly into the space at the center manufactured and that is adapted forkwide of the bellows. A vrelatively strong spring variation in the capacity or variation in 27 is interposed Ibetween the support and 55 pressures that may be handled. the head, a spring of suitable strength being A particular object is to provide a conselected to balance or off-set the expected struction in which there are no levers used pressure oXeI'tcd on the exposed area oi the in actuating the valve, and in which all parts SHOWS head. This spring is of fixedl resistare symmetrically arranged with the needle 3410, that 1S, 110 regulating mea-11S 'are prO- 60 valve' as their axis. The conservation of Vldedf space isaccomplished in a simple manner A glude Sleeve has a neck 28 which is that will be apparent, from the following pressed into the tubular portion 23 of the description.Y support, while the depending portion 29 2o My invention will be more readily underf VPIOJGCSS COWIlWLIdly and CtS 21S a guido 65 Stood by reference t0 the, accompanying fOI the tubular pOItlOII 26 Of the head. The
drawings, in which: `neck portion 28 has an inwardly projecting Fig. 1 is a plan view of a valve constructed Jalge 30 3115i the tubular portion 26 has in accordance with my invention, and a Correspondmg flange 31. To these flanges Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. iS Sellled by SOldeIIlg olwcldng, a SBCOIld 70 The illustrations on the original drawings bellows 32 that surrounds the needle valve filed herewith are intended to be double Seele, 18 and serves to seal the interior of the large that is, the illustrations are twice the size of bellows 24.. -the aotual device, The needle valve has a disc like head 33 In the drawings I have shown a casing a margin of which underlies the flange 31 75 comprising -a head 10 and a cup 11 in thread. of the bellows head, the disc having suitable' ed, air-tight engagement, The head eenopenings 34 thereon to permit the escape tains'an inlet passage 12 for the refriger- 0f llqllldthat passes therethrough. ating liquid7 a pipe'nipple projecting into The described parts may be constructed 35 the passage carrying a screenll. The head as a unit and then merely threaded into the 80 `also contains an outlet opening 14 in combOSS 2 1- 4 munication with the low pressure space 15 Varlable spring pressure is exerted on the lwithin the! cup. y lower end of the n'eedle valve by means of The wall 16 dividing the passage 12 from the spring 35, the upper end of which is 40 the low pressure chamber 15 contains a port Contained on a cap 36, and the lower end. 85
17 controlled by a needle valve 18, and inwithin a Screw Socket v37 that projects ycidental guide and seal members 19-20. A through the lower wall of the cup and is boss l21 surrounds the port` and acts as a adapted for actuation from the exterior of support for the valve controlling mechanism the casing. In order to seal the interior of about to be described. -This comprises abel:` the casing against any yescape around the adjusting socket 37, I provide a third bellows 38, soldered at its upper end to the spring cap, and at its lower end to the upwardly projecting boss 39 on the cup. Thus the adjustment offthe spring may be changed or the spring removed and replaced without unsealing the casing.
With the parts assembled as shown, with the low pressure chamber in communica- 'tion with the evaporation chamber of a resupplied by the spring 35, the regulation of` which force is effected from the'exterior of .the casing. By this meansv a ywide varial limited except tion in pressures may be handled without change in the proportions of thepar'ts.l
The construction as described may be very f simply manufactured and assembled, and is .adapted to handle any pressures on the low side, rom'20 lbs. above atmospheric to 25` inches of mercury below atmospheric l.All
the parts are symmetrical about the needle valve, thereby avoiding unevenness of valve wear, and conservingy space to the greatest extent. Obviously the construction is dapable of some modification, and l do not wish to be as indicated in the appended claims.
