GALE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO PNEUMATIC SCALE GORPORATION LIMITED, QUINCY, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF IILAS- SACHUSETTS METHOD OF PRINTING UPON THE PAGES 013 A BOOK Application filed April 11, 1929. Serial No. 354,295.
This invention relates to a novel method of printing upon the pages of a book and particularly to a. novel method for the production of a. check book in which the individual checks bear the depositors name and a serial number.
One object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved method of printing upon the pages of a book in bound form by which predetermined portions of the successive pages may be printed upon in a simple, convenient and practical manner.
A further objectof the invention is to provide a novel method by which check books bearing the depositors name and the serial number upon the face of each check may be produced in a much simpler, more convenient, and more economical manner than has heretofore been possible.
With these objects in view and such others as may hereinafter appear the invention consists in the method hereinafter described and particularly defined in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view illustrating a partially completed check book o1 special construction which may be utilized in practicing the present method; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of portion of a press illustrating the manner of printing upon a page of the check book; and Fig. 8 is a perspective of one of the check books produced by the present method.
At the present time it is the custom for banks to supply their depositors, when so requested. with check books bearing the name of the depositor upon the individual check, together with a serial number. After the depositor has used up one check book the bank supplies him upon request with an additional individual check book bearing the deositors name upon the face of the individual checks together with serial numbers run ning from the serial number of the last check in the preceding check book. At the present time it is necessary for the bank to have these check books made up to order for the individual depositors, and as a result considerable time elapses between a request and the delivery to the depositor of the check book.
In accordance with the present method a check book of special construction is produced in a bound form and in which upon the faces of the individual checks forming the book, spaces are provided upon which the depositors name and the serial number of the check may be printed. In order that the printing operation may be performed upon the book in bound form and by machinery, the present method has been developed which contemplates the maintenance of the body of the check book in predetermined and registered relation with respect to the printing element, and while maintained in such relation the printing operation is performed upon the uppermost page, after which such printed page is turned and the printing operation performed upon the next succeeding page, the latter being maintained in pre determined relation to the printing element so that in the completed check book the depositors name and serial number are accurately printed and a complete check book is produced which is neat, attractive in appearance, and whichmay be used for all of the purposes for which the similar check books produced by the present methods are used.
Referring now to the drawings, in accordance with the present invention a check book of the construction illustrated in Fig. 1 is preferably produced in which the usual plurality of lithograph checks 10 form each page of the book and are detachably secured to each other and to a stub portion 12. The individual checks'are provided with a space as at ltupon which the depositors name may be conveniently printed, and each check is further provided with a space as at 15 upon which the serial number of the check may be printed. The body of the book comprising the checks and stubsis bound by a binding 18 into cover members 20.
In order that the printing operation in printing the depositors name and also the serial number upon each page of checks may be vperformed so that each check will be a duplicate of others in the book, the present method contemplates one in which the body portion of the book is maintained in an accurately registered position with relation to a printing element 22 while permitting successive uppermost pages of the book to be turned after they have been printed upon. As herein shown, and in accordance with the preferred method, the check book is provided with two elongated registering slots 24 formed in the binding of the book, and so arranged as to permit stationary registering members 26 to extend upwardly through such slots when the cover portions 20 of the book are folded back and the book is positioned in the press or machine, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The registering members 26 preferably comprise flat pins or bars secured to a fixed bracket 30 forming a part of the press, and the body of the book may be operatively supported upon a platen or table 32. The printing element 22 may be reciprocated in accordance with the usual practice.
In practicing the present method, the check book having the spaces 14 and 15 upon the face of each check, and having one or more registering openings 24, is assembled in the press with the covers 20 folded back and as herein shown with the registering pins 26 extended through both slots 24 whereby through the cooperation of the pins with the walls of the slots, the body portion 35 of the book is maintained accurately registered with respect to the printing element 22. The printing operation is performed upon the uppermost page of the book by which the depositors name and the serial number are printed in the spaces 14 and 15 upon each check, and in addition in which the serial number may be printed upon the stub of the check. The page is then turned exposing the next succeeding page ready to be printed upon, and this operation is repeated until all of the checks have been printed, and during the entire printing operation the body portion of the check book resting upon the platen 32 remains accurately registered with respect to the printing element 22.
In practice it is preferred to print the depositors name in one column and the serial number of the check in another column, and this may be conveniently accomplished by supplying different colored inks to the inking mechanism by which the separate printing elements are supplied with ink:
\Vhile the preferred method of printing has been herein illustrated and described, it will be understood that the invention ma be practiced by other modifications within 7 the scope of the'following claims.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is 1. The method of printing upon the successive pages of a book, which comprises, positioning all the pages of the book in super posed relation and registering them with relation to each other and to a printing element, printing on predetermined portions of the upper surface of each page and turning each page thus printed while still maintaining the succeeding unprinted pages in their previously registered positions.
2. The method of printing upon the successive pages of a book, which comprises turning back both covers of the book, positioning all the pages of the book in superposed relation and registering them with relation to each other and to a printing element, printing on predetermined portions of the upper surface of each page and turning each page thus printed while still maintaining the succeeding unprinted pages in their previously registered positions.
The method of making a check book bearing upon the face of the checks the depositors name and the serial numbers, Which comprises first producing a bound check book with blank spaces for the reception of the depositors name and the serial number upon corresponding portions of each individual check, positioning the pages of the check book in superposed relation and registering the same with relation to each other and to aprinting element, printing upon the uppermost page the depositors name and the serial number upon the face of the check and in the spaces provided therefor, turning the page thus printed while still maintaining the succeeding pages in their previously registered positions and thereafter performing the printing operation upon the corresponding portions of the surface of each successive uppermost page while turning each page after printing to expose a succeeding registered page in a position ready to be printed upon.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
CHARLES E. GALE.
