GEORGE H. LUND, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ROTHSCHILD COLORTYPE COMPANY, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
METHOD 0F PRINTING SAMPLE COLOR CARDS AND THE LIKE,
Application led November 10, 1922. Serial No. 600,019.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. LUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Methods of Printing Sample Color Cardsv and the like, of Which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a method of printing sample color cards and the like which is economical and practical.
Heretof'ore it has been the practice of making sample color cards by putting each color upon a separate sheet, cutting the differently colored sheets into small chips, and
pasting one chip from each sheet upon sheets or cards thus forming the color cards.
My method effects the' making of color cards and the like by al much more economical method, the colors being printed directly upon the color cards in a manner which permits the color sections being placed adjacent one another and which permits each color being printed with a different ink Without necessitating a printing operation for each ink used.
It is common practice in printing to divide the ink fountain of a printing machine by means of partitions and to groove the composition ink rollers of the press to form roller sections corresponding with the divisions of the ink fountain in order to ink sections of the form on the press with different inks placed in respective divisions of the ink fountain, thus printing with a plurality of different inks with one printing operation.
This method of printing with different inks requires space between the several ink sections to prevent the inks from commingling with each other on the ink distributing mechanism.
My method utilizes this manner of printing with different inks with one printing operation, andpermits the printing of adjacent sections of a sheet, each with a different ink, at the same time providing sufficient space between the divisions of the ink sections printed during each printing operation to Vprevent the commingling of the different inks.
The invention will be more readily under- Figure 2 is a face view of the color card y or sheet as it appears after the second step of my invention has been performed.
Figures 3 and 4 are face views of the color card or sheet as it appears after additional steps of the invention have been performed. Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the various views.
In the said drawings Idesignates a color card or sheet. The first step in the process is to print, by the aforementioned method, a group of non-adjacent or alternate sections 2, as shown in Fig. l, each with a different ink, with' one printing operation. This leaves sufiicient space between the sections of this group so that the different inks do not commingle. The next step is to print, by the aforementionedk method, another group of non-adjacent or alternate sections 3, as shown in Fig. 2, each with a different ink, with a second printing operation. The printed sections of the sheet may thus be positioned close together and the sheet be fully printed with a relatively small number of printing operations. Vhere the sections are arranged in rows the aforementioned printing operations complete the printing of a row of sections. Additional rows of sections are printed on the sheet l by repeating the aforementioned process with respect to each additional row, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, Where a group of nonadjacent or alternate sections 4f of another rovi7 are printed, as shown in Fig. 3, each with a different ink, with a third printing operation, after which another group of non-adjacent or alternate sections 5 of this row are printed, as shown in Fig. et, each with a different ink, with a fourth printing operation, thus completing this row. A border 6 and such other matter as may be desired may be printed on the sheet with a separate printing operation either before the said sections of the sheet have been printed, as shown, or at any other time.
While I have herein particularly described my invention I do not Wish to be limited to the precise details set forth as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, but having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following 1. The method of printing adjacent sections of a sheet, each with a different ink, which consists in printing the sections, each with a different ink, in groups of non-adjacent sections with respective of successive printingoperations.
2. The method of printing adjacent sections of a sheet, each with a diferent ink, which consists in printing one group of nonadjacent sections, each with a different ink, with one printing operation and printing a second group of non-adjacent sections, each with a different ink, disposed adjacent respective sections of the first mentioned group with a second printing operation.
3. The method of printing adjacent sections of a sheet, each with a dii'erent ink, which consists in printing one group of alternate non-adjacent sections, each with a different ink, with one printing operation and printing the other group of alternate non-adjacent sections, each with a diii'erent ink, with a second printing operation.
4. The method of printing a row of sections O a sheet, each with a different ink, which consists in printing the sections, each with a different ink, in groups of non-adjacent sections with respective of successive printing operations.
5. The method of printing a row of adjacent sectionsof a sheet, each witha different ink, which consists in `printing one group of alternate non-adjacent sections, each with 'a d-iierent ink, with one printing operation and' printing the other group of alternate rnon-adjacent sections, each with a diiferent ink, with a second printing operation.
G. The method of printing a plurality of adjacent rows of adjacent sections of a sheet, each section with a different ink, which consists in printing each row separately and in groups of non-adjacent sections, each section with a different ink, with. respective or successive printing operations.
7. The niethod of printing a plurality of adjacent parallel rowsof adjacent sections of a sheet, each section with a different inlr, which consists in printing each row separately and inV groups of alternate non-adjacent sections, each section with a ditlerent ink, with respective of successive printing operations.
ln witness whereof I hereunto alix my signature this 3rd day of November, 1922.
GEORGE H. LUND.
