Description

Aug. 1l, 1931. J. .1. Liss CIGAR OR CIGARETTE LIGHTER y Filed April 17, 1929 ,Imaan Q Patented Aug. 11, 1931 Unirse STATES JOSEPH J.; LIES, OF
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS CIGAR OR CIGARETTE LIGHTER Application led April 17,
The invention relates generally to lighters and more particularly to a cigar or cigarette lighter of the iiint i ition type.
Heretofore diiiicu ty has been experienced in the use of lighters of the character indi cated because of the tendency of the Hint adiustin device, which is usuali a screw threa ed member, to be altered w. en carried about in the users pocket, or as a result of 1e carele handling of the lighter. This necessitated frequent readjustment of the iint and often resulted in loss of the adjusting device thereby rendering the lighter inoperative andr useless. The provision of threaded locking in nuts has been resorted to, but this alternative does not overcome the diiiculty and inconvenience above mentioned.,
The primary object of the invention, theren fore, is to overcome the diiiiculties heretofore 2o experienced by providing a lighter of the dint imition type having a new and impro-ved int adjusting means which is not subject -to accidental di laceinent or loss, and which is adapted to a van'ce the flint with greater facility. p
Another object of the invention is to rovide a lighter of the above character in w ich the ad'ustment of the iiint to operative contact with the friction wheel may be effected ,3o readily by turning an adjusting member with the lingers and in which the member is automatically locked after such adjustment.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparentfrom the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fi re 1 is a side elevation of a lighter embodying the features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
While the invention is susceptible of va rions modifications and alternative construc tions, l have shown in the drawings and will herein describe in detail the preferred embodiment, but it is to be understood that 192s. serial No. 355,749.
do noi-,thereby intend to limit the invention to the specic form disclosed, but intend to cover all modiiications and alternative constructions falling within the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, the invention in its exemplary form is embodied in a lighter of the flint ignition type having a well or body section 10 adapted to receive a suitable 55 wick (not shown) to be saturated with a combustible and volatile liquid.
1n lighters of the flint ignition type, the combpstiblel gas rising from the liquid with which the wick is saturated is adapted to be vo ignited by a spark projected from a toothed wheel when that member is rotated in frictional contact with a flint. Herein a toothed wh/eel 11 is rotatably supported upon a pin v 12 journaled at opposite ends in spaced arc5 allel arms 13 joined at their lower en s to forma U-shaped bracket. The bracket is rigidly supported adjacent the side of the well 10 as by ashort projection 14 of the base of the bracket in such manner that a 7o spark rejected tangentially from the lower edge ci? the wheel will be discharged through an opening 15 into the combustible gas abovethe wick. A flint 16 is slidably mounted. for engage- 75 ment with the wheel 11 in a guideway 17 formed, in the present instance, by longitudinal 4grooves cut in opposed inner faces of the arms 13. The guidewa 17 may be threaded substantially throng out its length and terminates in an opening in the inter mediate portieri of thelbracket. This openlrgis screwthreaded to receive a threaded a )usting member in the form of a headed screw 18 which may be turned to advance the S5 flint toward the friction wheel or removed to permit insertion of a new flint.
To enclose the head of the screw which projects below the bracket, a cap in' the form of a sleeve 19 is mounted on the shank of 9o the screw 'with one enel recessed to receive the hes-d of the soi'evvc Relative rotation between the screw and 'the sleeve is prevented in the present instance by engagement of e, 5 squared or non-circuler section of the screw shank with a non-circuler opening in the upper end of the sleeve defined herein by en internal 4liange 20, Thus, the sleeve is adapted to slide longitudinally along the shank of 'the sozevvu By grasping the outer lnniled surface of the sleeve, the sleeve and the screw may be warned to sflvence the :flint toward the Wheei ll.
Means is provided for looking the scievv 18 in any rlesiie. position of eoij ustment sind preferably suolo means is embodied in 'the members 'constituting the edjusting ineensV and the lins sopporing meses above described, To this eis-fl :the 'appel' end of the sleeve 19 is edepteel "oi' non--i'oteteiole or locking engagement "with end of 'the llint supporting loi-eelae; snai snoii engsgeinenl; is maintained amometioelly While 'the lighter is being oeisiefl els-oni. in Joe nsers pocket.
