The object of my invention-is to provide a rapid and economical means for racking stands of;pipe,such as drill pipe, as'they are withdrawn froma drilling well.
The. operation and advantages of my apparatus -may best be understood with the reference tothe yattached drawings and the following descriptionthereof, in which Fig, 1 is an isometric projection of the complete apparatus,

Referring tothe drawings, 1() is a stand of pipe (only the lower end thereof being shown) supported above the top ofthe string 11 @as by elevators'not shown) and over the r0tary--table y12. This stand is ready to be placed alongside ,the stands 13-13 which have alreadygbeen racked.
A carriage 14 carries six grooved rolls l-lwhich travel on two rails 16-16 hori- Zontallyaliixed totheframe of the derrick on the side opposite the calf wheel side. This carriage rolls freely on theI rails but is drawn towardthe right hand end of its travel'by a weight`17 suspended from a flexible line 18 running over idlers 19 and attached to the carriage asat 20.
From the carriage arigid bar or strut 21, which may be reinforced by'braces 22, is projected downwardly, carrying at its lower en d a yoke 23. In this yoke is swivelled a horizontal bar 24, this bar being so arranged within the yoke that it may swing upwardly a fewdegreeszfrom' horizontal; but cannot drop materially belowthat position. VOngthis bar slides a block 25 which may be. locked in any desired position .along the length of they bar by a'clamp/26.

25?) is. one ofa pair. of yoke arms extending upwardly'from the block, 250 is a pin, 26?) is a cam swivelling on the pin, 260 is a hand lever actuating the cam, and 25d is a pad or friction block interposed between the cam` face and the upper face of bar 24. A- downward movement of hand lever 26o urges the cam against pad 25d and the pad against bar 24, thus locking the clamp and its attached pulley 29 in any desired position along the length of bar 24.
A hook 27 is provided, to which is attached a line 28 which passes iirst over a grooved pulley 29 which revolves on clamp block 25, then over a pulley 30-attached to yoke 23, then over a pulley 31 attached to the strut 21, then overa pulley 32 attached to the left leg of the derrick or other Xed point of support, and is finally given two or threeturns around theldrum of a power cathead 33, which islr kept in constant rotation by any convenient source of power not shown. It would be feasible to omit pulleys 30 and 31 and carry the line'from pulley 29 direct to pulley 32. A long'free end of line 28?; is left beyond the drum, and the line should be of such nat-ure that the drum will revolve freely Within the turns until the free end of the line is pulled taut bythe hand of the operator.

The operator then depresses treadle 36, thus disengaging hool 35 and releasing the carriage which, because of the pull ot line 28 over pulley 3l or 29 as the case may be), mover: to the lett on the rails 16, the bar 24; carrying the lower end ot the stand in a parallel direction. as that indicated by the line and arrow 39, to the position 13a which it is to occupy.

Betere repeating the above movements with the next stand the clamp block is moved along the' bar Qlla distance slightly greater than the outside diameter of the pipe collar Y or tool oint, so that the next stand will. move into a position adjoining that ot the tirst stand.

A device for racking stands ot drill pipe in a derrick, comprising: rails horizontally supported along one side of said derrick; a carriage travelling on said rails; means for drawing said carriage toward the inner end ot said rails; an arm projecting from said carriage into said derricl; a winding drum and means lior actuating the drum; a block movable along the length ot said arm, a clamp adapted to atlir; said block to said arm in any desired position and an idler pulley attached to said block; an idler pulley attached to the derrick near the outer end oit said rails; an idler pulley attached to said carriage; a pipe hook and a line attached thereto, said line being passed over said pulleys and around said drum in such manner that the winding of said line over said drum will draw said hook over first said idler pulley and will tend to draw said carriage toward the outer end ot said rails.

A device for racking pipe stands in a derriclr, comprising: rails horizontally supported along one side ot said derrick; a carriage travelling on said rails; means for drawing said carriage toward the inner end of said rails; an arm projecting from said carriage into said derrick; a winding drum and means for actuating the drum; an idler pulley attached to said arm; an idler pulley supported within said derrick near the outer end of said rails; a pipe hook and a line attached thereto, said line being passed over said pulleys and around said drum in such manner that the winding ot' said line about said drum will draw said hook toward first said pulley and will tend to draw said Carriage toward second said pulley.

A device tor racking pipe stands in a derricl, comprising: rails horizontally sup ported along one side ot said derrick; a carriage travelling on said rails; means for drawing said carriage toward the inner end of said rails; means for releasably holding said carriage adjacent the inner end ot' said rails; an arm projecting from said carriage into said derrick; a winding drum and means for actuating the drum; an idler pulley attached to said arm; an idler pulley supported within said derriek near the outer end ot said rails; a pipe hook and a line attached thereto, said line being passed over said pulleys and around said drum in such -manner that the winding of saidline about said drum will lul) draw said hook toward first said pulley and will tend to draw said carriage toward second said pulley.

A device for racking pipe sta-nds in a derrick, comprising: rails horizontally supported along one side of said derriok; a carriage travelling on said rails; means for drawing said carriage' toward the inner end of said rails; a hook attached to said derriclr adjacent the inner end of said rails, a pin projecting from said carriage and engaging said hook and treadle means for releasing said vhook from said pin; an arm projecting from said carriage into said derriek; a Winding drum and means Jfor actuating the drum; an idler pulley attached to said arm; an idler pulley supported within said derriok near the outer end of said rails; a pipe hook and a line attached thereto, said line being passed over said pulleys and around said drum in such ina-nner that the Winding of said line about said drum will draw said hook toward irst said pulley and Will tend to dravv said carriage toward second said pulley.
