IMPROVEMENT IN TIPPING AND PATCHING BOOTS AND SHOES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,821, dated September 5, 1876; application filed July 11, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID T. COOPER, of Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State ofMichigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tipping and Patching Shoes and Boots, of which the following is a specification:

in the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side view of a shoe with a tippatch and heel-foxing put on according to my improved method. Fig. 2 is a detail view of a tip and wire fastening; and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of the fastening-wires for the tips, patches, and foxings.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The object of this invention is to provide an improved method for putting tips, heel-foxings, and-patches on boots or shoes, whether they are new or worn, in a quicker, cheaper, and more perfect manner than in the old way.

By the old method of putting on tips or patches the tip or patch is retained by sewing through the outer sole all around, which presents a very unfinished appearance, while requiring a great deal of labor. To put on a heel-foxing, the shoe has to be ripped up under the foxing, fastened to the outer-sole back, and a new heel then to be put on.

By my method a tip, patch, or foxing may be put on the shoe in a few moments, and without ripping up the heel-seat at all.

The invention consists in doubling up the edge of the tip, patch, or foxing, inserting a wire into the folded part, and fastening the wire by forcing the ends through small awlholes of the outer sole, and by means of intermediate wire clips, which are drawn up tightly, twisted, and clipped off or clinched on the outside of the sole.

In the drawing, A represents aboot or shoe B, a tip, patch, or foxing; and G, the wire that serves to retain the same on the outer sole. The tip, patch, or foxing B is first doubled up at the lower edge, as shown in Figs. land 2, and the fastening-wire G then placed into the doubled-up part, and the leather and wire applied close to the part to be covered. The ends of wire 0 are drawn through awl-holes made in the outer sole close to the upper, being then twisted and clipped.- The Wire (lis fastened, at intermediate points, at regular distance. by Wire clips 0, that are in similar manner drawn tightly through awl-holes arranged to correspond with the clips, and twisted, clipped, or clinched on the outside of the sole, so as to retain thereby the leather tips or foxings closelyon the shoe or heel, presenting the appearance of having been put on when the shoe was made.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The method of securing patches, tips, or

foxings to boots and shoes, consisting of the doubling of the edge of the leather to be united to the sole, and placing within the folds a wire, the ends of which pass down through the sole then further securing the patch, tip, or foxing by intermediate wire clips, which pass through the folded edge and sole, the ends being twisted and clipped or clinched, all as shown and described.
