Aug. 11, 1931. w. R. PETERSON FEEDING DEVICE FOR VALVE BAGS Filed Oct. 29. 1929 gwve'n fox WM 6?. 0mm
Patented Aug. 11,1931
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM B. PETERSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB TO 8'1. BEGIS YAPEB OOH- PANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION 01 NEW YORK FEEDING DEVICE FOR VALVE BAGS Application med October 29, 1929. Serial 170. 408,297.
This invention relates to apparatus for filling valve bags and more particularly to a device wherein the main part of the charge is fed to the bag rapidly and the final filling is accomplished at a comparatively slow rate.
The apparatus embodies means providing two discharge orifices, one a main discharge orifice through which material is discharged rapidly and one a supplemental discharge To orifice through which material is discharged at a slower rate. A spout is provided adapted to enter the valve of a bag and mounted so as to be moved from registry with the main discharge orifice to registry with the supplep 3,1 mental discharge orifice after the main charge has been received in the bag.
Details of 'the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings forming a 20 part of this specification, Figure 1 is a somewhat diagrammatic elevation of apparatus embodying this invention; Fig. 2 is a front view of a portion of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fi 4 is a diagrammatic view of the electrica connections to the motors.
The apparatus comprises a frame carrying a spout 11 adapted to enter the valve 30 of a bag and having a support 12 for the bottom of a bag mounted on spout 11. The frame is suitably mounted upon a beam 13 forming a part of a weighing device.
A hopper 14 guides material into a casing 15 from which a centrifugal propeller 16 is adapted to discharge material rapidly through a main discharge orifice 17.
A supplemental hopper 18, which may be connected at its top with hopper 14, guides material to a casing 19 from which a centrifugal propeller 20 discharges material ata comparatively slow rate, to supplemental discharge orifice 21.
Centrifugal propeller 16 is driven b a motor 22 which may e connected with -t e ropeller through a clutch 23, if desired. entrifugal propeller 20 is driven by a motor 24. Switches for controlling the motors are mounted in a switch box 25 and a rod 26 ex- 50 tending from a portion of the weighing de vice into the switch box actuates the switches to control the motors as desired. Rod 26 may carry an arm 27 adapted to close operating switch 28 of motor 22 when the parts are in the position in which they are shown in Fig. 1. Rod 26 carries a pivoted member 29 adapted to close switch 30 controlling motor 24, when rod 26 swings to the right, but which will yield without closing the switch when the rod moves to the left.
The end of the scale beam carries a link 31 passing through a bail 32 on supplemental weight 33, which rests upon a convenient suport when the arts are in the position in which they are s own in Fig. 1.
In the operation of the device, a bag is placed upon spout 11 while the spout is in registr with discharge orifice 17. Thereupon t e motor of the main discharge propeller is started by raising arm 34 of switch 28, which is connected by a friction joint 35 with arm 36, and material is fed into the bag. When the major portion of the desired charge has been filled into the bag, the weighting device yields so that frame 10 moves downward.
VArm 27 releases arm 36, so that it is swung to the right by spring 37 and stops motor 22,
at the same time reducing the angle between arms 34 and 36. The parts are so arranged that frame 10 will continue to move downward until spout 11 is in registry with delivery orifice 21, whereupon its movement is stopped by link 31 encountering bail 32, and it remains in that position until a suflicient additional amount of material has been discharged through orifice 21 to com lete the desired charge in the bag. When rame 10 arrives in registry with orifice 21, rod 26 reaches a position where member 29 closes switch 30 to start motor 24. When suflicient material to complete the char in the bag has been delivered through ori ce 21, weight 33 is lifted and frame 10 moves further downward and as a result of this further movement rod 26 is moved to carry member 29 past the cooperating cam on switch 30 so that the switch is allowed to open to sto motor 24.
The particular mechanisms for ceding and discharging the material and the arrangement of the switches and. weighing device may be varied as desired, and other changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims. I
What is claimed is:
1. In apparatus for filling packages, a
frame adapted to support the package to be filled and carrying a spout adapted to deliver material to the package, means providing a main delivery orifice and a supplemental delivery orifice beneath the main orifice, and a weighing device supporting the frame with its spout in registry with the main orifice when a package on the frame is empty, and adapted to yield to weight in the package and lower the frame to register the spout with the supplemental orifice.
2. In apparatus for filling packages, 21 frame adapted to support the package to be filled and carrying a spout adapted to deliver material to the package, means providing a main delivery orifice and a supplemental delivery orifice beneath the main orifice, a Weighing device supporting the frame with its spout in register with the main orifice when a package on the frame is empty, and adapted to yield to weight in the package and lower the frame to register the spout with the supplemental orifice, and means controlled by the weighing device for stopping the main discharge and initiating the supplemental discharge when the spout is moved from registry with the main orifice to the supplemental orifice.
3. Apparatus for filling valve bags, comprising a frame carrying a substantially horizontal spout adapted to enter the valve of a bag, means providing a main delivery orifice and a supplemental delivery orifice beneath the main orifice, and a weighing device supporting the frame with its spout in registry with the main orifice when a package on the frame is empty, and adapted to yield to weight in the package and lower the frame to register the spout with the supplemental ori- 4. Apparatus for filling valve bags, comprising a frame carrying a substantially horizontal spout adapted to enter the valve of a bag, means providing a main delivery orice and a supplemental delivery orifice beneath the main orifice, a weighing device supporting the frame with its spout in registry with the main orifice when a package on the frame is empty, and adapted to yield to weight in the package and lower the frame to register the spout with the supplemental orifice, and means controlled by the weighing device for stopping the main discharge and initiating the supplemental discharge when the spout is moved from registry with the main orifice to the supplemental orifice.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
WILLIAM R. PETERSON.
