IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC CAN S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181.783, dated September 5, 1876; application filed I July 8, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE LEIB HARRI- SON, Jr. of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Uans, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and precise description, and sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to construct andemploy it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and of which Figures 1 and 2 are central sectional elevations of two forms of my said improvement, and Fig. 3 aside elevation of the same.

My invention relates to that class of metallic cans which are employed for the hermetical sealing up of paints, preserves, and the like, and are known as easy opening, and has for its object a can, which, although soldered in closing, can be readily opened by sec tion; to which end it consists as follows A in the drawing represents the body of the can, made in the ordinary manner. B is the cover, in the construction of the flange D of which the substance of this invention lies. An elevation, G, is stamped, spun, turned, or otherwise formed in the flange, as shown in the drawings, in such manner as to form two circumferential shoulders, E, bridged over, so to speak, by a circumferential band of metal, F, forming an annular space between the chime or upper portion of the body and the band. The solder is applied in the usual manner around the edge of the flange, or, when the elevation is itself carried down to the edge of the flange, around the lower shoulder of the elevation. The band is preferably curved or angled inward, so as to form a gutter or other channel-shaped depression.
Such being its construction, the can is opened by cutting with a suitable tool directly through the band, the tool being guided in its passage by the gutter of the band, and the shoulders affording, from their structure, sufficient resistance to the depressing force of the 'tool to insure the perforation of the band by the tool, and not permit of the bending in of the band until it comes into contact with the body lying beneath it.
It is obvious that any other form, retaining the principle of an elevated portion between two supporting shoulders or ridges, will be but a'moditication of my invention; and that any other device, such as a scored line upon the band instead of the gutter, may be employed to guide the cutting-tool. It is also obvious that the can can be used a second time by resoldering, and that the cut may be made in any direction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States A can for paints, preserves, or the like, in the flange of whose cover is formed an elevation, consisting of a circumferential band of metal supported by two circumferential shoulders or supports, to the end that when the flange has been soldered to the body the cover can be removed by section through the elevation, substantially as described.
