My invention relates to signaling systems and more particularly to means whereby signaling may be effected over wire lines which are used for other purposes.
.One of the objects of my invention is to provide novel means whereby signaling such, for exam le, as telephone communication may be e ected over lines which are used for control purposes such as the operation of relays and the like without affecting the operation of the control devices.
Another obj ectof my invention is to provide a novel switching arrangement whereby the above result may be accomplished and whereby the line which is employed is alternately connected to the control devices and to the signaling devices.
Still another object of the inventionis to provide means of the type indicated which is sufiiciently economical'to install to permit its use in installations where the use of the wire line for .signalor telephone purposes is only occasionally required and where the cost of the installation must necessarily be small.
5 The novel features which .I believe to be characteristic of my invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claims. My invention itself, however, both asto its organization and method of operation together with further objects and advantages thereof may best be understood by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawing which shows an embodiment of my invention V Referring to the drawing, I have represented at l a linewhich may connect two power stations A and B, which may comprise respectively a substation and central, or dispatchers station of a power distribution system and which line may be used to control any desired control device 2, which maybe, for example, the master starting relay of the remote station, in response to operation of a key 3 in'the'dispatchersstation B. In each ofthe stations A and B are located telephone instruments 4 and 5, respectively. a
In the substation A a control relay 6 is arranged to respond to current in the line 1 to connect the master relay 2 tea supply line 7 in the substation and thereby to control switch 10, line 1, switch 9 in its upper position remain in the position shown. Thus a mothat relayin response to current in line 1. This master relay 2 may also be connected to the supply line 7 through a switch 8. The
control relay 6 and the telephone instrument 4 at the station A are arranged to be connected alternately to the line 1 by means of switch 9.
In the dispatchers' station B a magnetically operated switch 10 having an actuating winding 11 is arranged alternately to connect line 1 to a source of electro-motive force 12 and to the telephone instrument 5. The actuating winding 11 is arranged to be energized in response to operation of key 3.
I The operation of the system is as follows: With the equipment in the position shown in the drawing it will be seen that a complete circuit extends from the source 12 through actuating winding 11, main contacts of and the actuating winding of relay 6. Thus the actuating windings of both the switch 10 and relay 6 are energized and these devices are retained in the position shown in the'drawing. Relay 6 thus connects the actuating winding of the master relay to the supply circuit? in the sub-station. V Assuming that the dispatcher at'the central station desires to operate the master relay to its open circuit position, he will operate key 3 to its upper position thereby short-circuit-ing the actuating winding of switch 10 and causing this switch to operate under its bias to the position in which telephone instrument 5 is connected to the line and the supply source 12 is disconnected from the line. Actuating windings of relays 6 and 2 will then be deenergized thereby causing the relay 2 to operate to its open circuit position. When the'operator desires to close the contacts of relay 2he will operate key 3 to its lower position thereby energizing winding 11 and causing the switch 10 to interrupt the telephone circuit and to connect the supply source 12 to the line. As soon as key 3 is returned to its nor mal position' the circuit of coil 11 is completed through line 1 rather than through the key with the result that switch 10 will mental? P ng of key 3 is sufl'icient for the m purpose. Relays 2 and 6 will now be operated to the closed position.
Assuming that an operator who visits the remote station A desires to speak with the operator in the station B, he will first operate switch 8 to its lower position, thereby connecting the actuating winding of master relay 2 to the supply circuit 7 through this switch. He will then operate switch 9 to the lower position. This operation will interrupt the circuit of actuating winding 11 thereby causing switch 10 to operate to the position in which the telephone instrulnent 5 is connected to the line. This operation will also deenergize relay 6 but operation of this relay "will not now a'll'ect the master relay 2. The telephone signaling and conversion may then be had in the usual manner. When the telephone conversation is completed the op erator "at the station A will return switch 9 'to :its original position and the operator at station B will operate key 3 to its lower position thereby returnin switch 10 to the position shown in the drawing When this has been effected switch 8 may be returned to its normal position thereby again rendering the master relay 2 subject to the control of the operator in the station 13. Thus it will be seen that a telephone conversation may be had over the line 1 without affecting the position-of-master relay 2, and that line 1 may be used practically independently both for con- :trol and signaling purposes.
VVhi-le I have shown a particular embodiment 'o'f my invention it will of course be understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto since many modifications, both in the circuit arrangement and in the instrumentalities employed, may be made without do parsing from the spirit and scope of my invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure -by Letters Patent of the United States, is: 1. In combination, a dispatchers station, a remote-station, a line joining said stations, a control device in'each station, a signal device .in each station, switching means in each sta tion for connecting said line alternately to the control devices and signal. devices in the respective stations, and means responsive to operation of said switching means in one station to connect the line to the signal device in said one station and for operating the switching means in the other station over said line to connect the line to the signal device in said other station.
2. In combination, a dispatchers station, a remote station, a line oining said stations, a source of current, signal means in both stations,switching means in the dispatchers station for alternately connecting said line in oircuit wit-h said source and with the signal means in the dispatchers station, means in the remote station responsive to current in said line, and means for controlling said both stations, switching means biased toc'onnect the line to the signal means in the dispatchcrs station and arranged to connect the line to the current supply means in said station, means for retaining said switching means in condition to connect said line to said current supply means, and means in the remote station for releasing said retaining means and means for maintaining said current responsive means 'in'the remote station in its instant condition when said retaining means is released.
4. In combination, a dispatchers station, a remote station, a-line joining said stations,
current supply means, switching means in the dispatchers station, biased to one position and having an actuating winding, a circuit controlled by said switching means in said one position, said switching means being arranged in another position thereof to con nect said line in series with said actuating winding and said current supply means, whereby said switching means is retained in said'other position, means in the remotestation responsive to current in said line, whereby said means is controlled 'bysaid switching means in the dispatcher s station, and means in the remote station for interrupting said line thereby. to actuate 'sai'dswitching means to said one position.
5. In combination, a 'dispatchers station, a
remote station, a line joiningsaid stations, a
signal device in each station, current supply means in the dispatchers -station,a device in the remote station, means responsive to current in said line for control'ling'said device, switching means 'in the remote station for alternately connecting said line to saidcurrent responsive means and to the signal device in said station, means for preventing operation of said switching means from atfecting said device, and means in 'the dispatchers station for connecting'the line to said current supply means and :responsi-ve'to operation of said switching means to connectthe line to said signal device.
6. In combinatioIn-a dispatchers station,'a remote station, a 'line joining said stations, a signal device in each station, an additional device in the remote station, a circuit includsaid line, means in the dispatchers station for controlling said additional device over said circuit,switching means for interrupting said circuit and for connecting said line to said signal'devices, and means for preventing operatlon of said switching :means izo from affecting said additional device whereby said additional device is maintained in its instant condition when said current is interrupted.
