IMPROVEMENT IN GAME-TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,769, dated September 5, 1876; application filed April 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHANNES B. BUTZBACH, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Game- Table, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to a novel game-table of the pool-billiard class, consisting of a level rectangular table, with an opening at the head end, communicating with a circular head, inclined toward the body, the opening or throat being less than the diameter of the balls. Four pins of different values are set up in the head. Three balls are laid in the head-one of them in the throat of the opening and one at each side of it; and the center one is struck by carrom-balls on the main table, projecting the three balls around the head, causing them to knock down one or more or all the pins, when the three balls will resume their positions in the throat, ready for another shot.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the table, with the balls and pins in position for playing. Fig. 2 is a plan of the table. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section at a; w in Fig. 2.
In the drawing, A represents a rectangular table, having an elastic cushion, a, at the sides, as in an ordinary billiard-table. At the head end of the table there is a circular extension, A, inclined toward the body of the table, with which it communicates by a throat, a, cut through the head-cushion, which throat is not quite wide enough to permit a ball, B, to pass through. Four pins, 0, are spotted on the bed of the head, having, severally, the
value of l, 2, 5, and 10, or any others, if preferred, and the game is counted by the value of the pin or pins knocked down at each shot. A ball, 0, is placed (or allowed to roll down to place) in the head at its throat, and one at each side of it. lwo balls are spotted in line on the table, and the near one is propelled by hand in a small table, or with a cue in a large one, against the upper ball, to carrom it against the ball in the throat, which is thus caused to roll up the inclined head, while the side balls roll around it, knocking down one or more pins in their course, returning by their own gravity to their proper positions, ready for the next shot. Ball-sockets b are provided in the table to hold the balls not in use. By means of the cushions a carrom game may be played on the main table.
