IMPROVEMENT IN LAUNDRV-STOVES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 81,733, dated August 29, 1876; application filed September 25, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NATHANIEL M. SI- MONDS, of the city and county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Laundry-Stoves, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My improvement consists informing the outer sides of the side fire-plates for the reception of the irons, the usual outer shell or wall of the stove being dispensed with at these places.

I show and describe my preferred form of construction.

Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a transverse section.

A is the ash-pit, and B the fire-grate. 0 is the ash-drawer. D and E are fire-doors in the front plate F. The top G has the usual arrangement for a boiler, iron-heater, or other utensil. The fire lining or plates upon the inner side have the usual ribbed surface, and no novelty is claimed in the end plates of said lining; but my invention applies to the side fireplates H H, which are preferably cast with a recess, h, on the outer side, and extending nearly their whole length and width; and at the lower edge of the recess is a projecting flange, i, which serves to support the irons which are placed in the recess for the purpose of heating them.

The shell S of the stove is absent at these places, and the fire-plates there constitute the sides. I prefer to make these plates H removable,-and for this reason secure them to the end walls by bolts 1); but they may be riveted fast, if desired. The main purpose of making them removable is the same as with ordinary fire-plates, namely, to allow of the substitution of new plates when the old are warped, cracked, or burnt out. It is not necessary that the fire-plates H should have recess h, as it will-answer the'purpose with the outer side made flat for the contact of the faces of the irons.

The supporting-flange i may be cast with the plate H, as described, or attached to the plate subsequently. Llrepresent flanges at the sides or ends of the plates H. They serve to retain the end irons in place, and may be cast with the plate H, as described, or attached thereto, as desired.

I do not claim the construction of the side of a stove, so as to sustain smoothing-irons thereon, as this is not new; but

What I claim is- The removable side plates H, having flanges at the bottom and sides, and overhanging the fire-grate located in a line with their base, substantially as set forth.
