The present invention relates to vacuum cleaners, and its primary object, broadly stated, is to provide certain improvements in the dust collecting and air filtering units which are used in connection with such cleaners. Other objects and advantages will appear asthe description proceeds.

To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, the annexed drawings and the following description setting forth in detail certain means of carrying out the invention, such disclosed means illustrating, however, but one of various ways in which the principle of the invention may be used.

In said annexed drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a dust collecting and air filtering unit which-embodies the present improvements; Figs. 2 and 3 are fragmentary plan and vertical sectional views which were taken alon the correspondingly numbered-lines of Fig. l; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing a modified closure arrangement; Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of another dust collecting and air filtering unit which embodies the present improvements; and Fig 6 is a vertical sectional view which was taken along the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.

The unit shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, consists of a bag 10 which has a neck part 11 that is secured around an inlet tube 12. The upper edge of such bag is formed into a mouth, and its two lips 13 and 14 are constituted by the side walls 15 and the reinforcing strips 16, such side walls being inwardly turned and secured aboutI such strip. The lip 13 is provided with the loop members 17, and the lip 14 is provided with the bail members 18, such bail members being pivotally interlinked with the retaining parts 19. A paper bag 20 is positioned Within the outer cloth bag 10, and its neck part 21 is removably secured in telescoping relation to the inner section 22 of the tube 12, such section forming a .deflector in addition to providing a seat for such neck. When such inner bag is in place and the `Flg. 3. In securing such lips in their adjacent positions, the bails 1S are turned over the loop members 17 and the upper portions of such loops are then adapted for inten' engaging with the handle hooks of the machine (not shown).

The modified closure illustrated in Fig. 4 is about the same as that illustrated in Fig. 3, but here a zipper or like arrangement 25 replaces the flap 23. If desired, however, such zipper or the like may be simply an addition, the fiap 23 being retained.

The modified dust collecting and air filtering unit which is illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 consists of an outer cloth bag 30 and an inner paper bag 31. Such bags are relatively arranged in about the same manner as the corresponding bags of the showings of the preceding figures. Here, however, the outer bag 30 has its upper edge 32 constituted simply by the side Walls 33 and the reinforcing strip 34, while its lower edge 35 is as clearly shown in Fig. 6 formed into a mouth. The lips of such mouth are formed by the eXtreme lower portions of the side walls 33, and to such portions are secured the zipper sections 36, such sections being adapted for association and disassociation in the usual manner. When a bag of this character is operatively associated with a machine, the loops 37 are engaged with the handle hooks lin the same manner as above explained in connection with Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive.

In the above form of this invention the outer bags are so arranged as to fully protect their inner bags, and in all cases such inner bags can be easily and expeditiously removed and replaced. In each instance, such outer bags are made of a porous cloth and such inner bags are made of a porous paper. In securing the inlet necks of such inner bags in leak-proof relation to the tubes of such outer bags, any suitable means such as resilient or elastic bands may be employed.

Other modes of applying the principle of my inventiony may be employed instead of the one explained, change bein made as regards the means herein disclose ,provided those stated by any of the following claims or their equivalent be employed.

I therefore particularly point out and dis'- tinctly claim as my invention :--v

l. In an air iiltering and dust collecting unit for use in connection with a vacuum cleaner, associated inner paper and outer vcloth bags. said outer bag having a mouth for receiving said inner bag, the lips of said bag receiving mouth reinforced by means of metal strips, one of said lips having a bail attached thereto, the other lip v having a rigid loop extending therefrom, said loop adapted to be engaged by said bail and removably secured by clamps on the handle of said sweeper.

2. In an air filtering and dust collecting unit foruse-in connection with a vacuum cleaner', associated inner and outer bags, said outer bag having a mouth for receiving said inner bag, the lips of said mouth folded over a rigid strip to provide a stiff edge for such mouth, one of said lips having a bail attached to the rigid strip, the other lip of said mouth having a rigid loop attached to the rigid strip thereof, said loop adapted to be engaged by said bail and secured to the handle of said cleaner.

3. In an air filtering and dust collecting unit for use in connection with a vacuum cleaner, associated inner and outer bags, said outer bag having a Vmouth for receiving said inner bag, the edges of the bag forming the lips of said mouth folded over and enclosing a metal strip to provide stiff l lips for said bag receiving-mouth, one edge of said mouth extending inwardly beyond said stiff lip to provide a flap bar closing said bag receiving mouth.
