vIn .the construction of the package` describedherein, it is anothery of my objects to providea package in Which, the portions of the package receiving thematches are so' constructed that easy Withdrawal of the matchesfis permitted Withoutany tendency to. stick Within thepackage.- This is'particularly advantageous in the fvvithdrawal; of the *endy match, Which, in my previous yconstruction, occasionally caused some diilicultyy because*l of its tendency'to stickV Withinthe package.` `f

InFigure-f'l'l haveshown a@ blank WithfsidesV y1 fha-ving zigzag cutlvvalls, andiwith score v.lines 2 at substantially the median line of the the sides to be 'folded over withV thematch heads 7held Within the fold adjacent the yarea between the score `linesV 2 2. I-tWill be noted that'from-the'central blank,"which permits area of the blank the side walls incline up- Y wardly and downwardly, and then flare outwardly to the end edges 3-3 of the blank.
Along the narrowest portion 4of each side' where the side walls start to flare outwardly, AI provide score lines 4 4, and adJacent the and scored and then ordinarily the bands 5 of fulminate are applied. The cutting and scoring-.and application of the fulminate may, however, Vbe carried out with a single continuous operation. After vthe blank has been cut and scored and the fulminate has been applied and allowed to dry, the package is ready for receiving its matches, which ordinarily will kbe inserted within the package as indicated in Figure 4, by .partially folding the blank along the lines l-fc, and then along the score lines 2-2 until the inner fold has assumed a V-shapedl arrangement, at which time thel matches are deposited in thepar- Y tially folded member. f
Referring to-Figure- 1, the outside, of the blank orjfolding member is illustrated. ln assembling this blank the end flaps of the blank; arev folded Vaway from the position in whichitheblankis-illustrated; then the side walls of the blank are also foldedv away froml the position illustrated, and after the matches areinserted withitheir heads within the folded piece, the tension caused by the inner flaps bent along the score lines 4,-4 will tend to hold the matches snugly. in position. Any
' Y-outer wrapper7, which is of slightly'tapered i there will. be no fwaste material, vdue tothe' shape and of suitable size to lit snugly about thel inner folded member, may then Vbeap'- gg"y plied -tothe folded member to hold the package securely together.A The outer cover may be formed of thin paperor other suitable material, and ordinarily will bear announcementsy or other suitable advertising orv design material. K Referring to the dotted lines-8 in VFigure 1, it'willzbe-'observed that by staggering blankswhich are out from a sheet 'zig-zag shape of the sides of the blank.V
In Figure 2 yI Vhave shownthe blanks la 1,provided asin Figure l with the scorelines 20a-2a along the middle area of the package, and withthe necks of the blanks forming the withdrawaly orificealso provided with score lines 4ta-4a. Thev portions of the .blank which form the withdrawal orifice are provided with areas of fulminate indicated at 5a. Theshape of the blank shown in 'Figure 2 is jsirnilar to the shape' shown in Figure 1,
excepting that instead of flaring outwardly-r and the orifice necks score lines 4b-4Zn Areas of fulminate s-5b are applied in the usual manner, and the end infolding flaps are cut allfdiderentlengths sothat one end 3b will have an inwardly'folding flap of normal lengthandtheV other end 3c will be cut off, providing clearance space. lhen the blank shownin Figure?) is folded over toenclose the matches, an easy sliding4 space permitting the withdrawal of the matches toward the withdrawal orifice will be provided because of the cut away endc.V v f It will, of course, be entirely feasible to provide the outer closure member by providing extending flapsfrom the mainy bodies of the cartons which will fold over and provide a completely enclosing'outer wrapper, and in order to illustrate such a modification, reference is made to Figures 8 toll.
In Figure 8 the blank has sidel wallslc-lc with scorelines Qc-Qa' End flaps 30-36 are providedarticulated to the side flaps with score lines ac lc. Fulminate isv applied to one sidel and one flap 3 0, as indicated at tic-50. In assembling` the package made from -a single blank, any desired fairlystiif .i paper may be used. f f' Extending from *oneV side vof onekof the. sides 20" there is an articulatedportion 10,.
.and to it is articulated awall'fll which in Vflaps 13 andlel are then foldedandsealed,
making a package in which theV matches will beretained so that theyV will not tend to drop out, and so that the Vstart to withdrawthem will be easy. yi y VThe packages when completed will be substantially weather-proof and fire-proof. rlhe matches being withdrawn in alignment withy their length will -have no tendency to have their headsV broken off so that there will be a lire hazard, dueto breaking off the burningheads of the'matches.` Since' the outer wrapper fits snuglyfabout the-,inner fold, the package will-be substantially air- @essere t tight, vso that'feven 'the yexposed ends of i the shanks of ther-matches vare lighted,-all
i "that'gwill happen rwill be that theends will `r burning will be extinguished. v
Since ythe igniting heads ofthe lmatches require a y t ends,-gthe package Lis of slightly vtapered is'exerted at the neck l f headsretained within the package and their' a Withdrawaloriiice lheads of thematcheswith ythe withdrawal u f thereof from the package, said'fiap having y, yfin thewithdrawal ofvmatches from the packburn down asfar as f per,.of theblank, and of ,still permit thepackage to'be assembled in of the double fold of the inner flap, tension matches falling out ofthe f are Amanually withdrawn.
