. .-PATE NT; OFFICE MOLDZEN G ASSEMBLY This invention relates generally to :finish' strip or molding assemblies and refers more particularly to metallic finish strips of the snap-on type designed for use as trimming at s the edges of window openings in the doors of which finish strips for the vehicle bodies.- n
One of the essential objects of the invention is to provide an assembly of this type in top, bottom and 10 side edges of the window opening are formed from a single sheet of metal and are adapted to be snapped on the edges of the window gpening so as to constitute a framing thereor. .Another ob'ect is to provide an assembly in which the the window opening has a depending apron portion or flange that overlaps and conceals the upper edge and outer face of the fabric 20 trim panel upon the inner side of the door.
A further object is to provide an assembly that maybe readily and accurately manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts that will be hereinafter more fully describedand particularly pointed out in the appended claims. I In the accompanyingdrawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a door having a molding assembly embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2- 2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;?
Figure tis a sectional view taken on' the line 4-4 of Figure l; i
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing a slightly modified molding construction;
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 66 of Figure 5.
Referring now to the drawings 1 is a vehi- I cle body door of the swinging or in ed type having spaced inner and outer pane s 2 and 3 reslpectlvely of sheet metal provided with inter ocking marginal flanges 4 and 5 respectively and provided adjacent their upper ends with registering window openings 6 and nish strip at the lower edge of Application filed January 27, 1980. Serial no. 423,791.
7, and 8 designates the molding or finish strip for the edges of the'opening 6 in the inner panel. As shown, the inner panel 2 is provided. at the top, the opening 6 with inturned flanges 9, 10, 11 and 12 respectively that preferably comprise inwardly opening channels extending longitudinally of the edges of the opening 6 and serve as anchorage strips for the molding 8.'
For this purpose the outer walls 9', 10', 11 and 12' of the channels are rounded while the inner walls 9", 10", 11" and 12" are straight and extend at substantially right an Ice to the bases of the respective channels. referably the rounded portions 9, 10 and 12 project laterally from the inner face of the inner panel 2.
As shown, the molding 8 conforms in shape to the channel flanges 9, 10, 11 and 12 and is preferably sna ped thereon. Preferably the moldin for t e flanges is formed from a single s eet of metal and constitutes a one piece framing for the window opening 6. I
ing 8 As illustrated in Figure 1, the mol 1s curved at 15, 16, 17 and 18 respectivel however, in Figures 5 and 6 the lowerbe t bottom and side edges of.
While it is believed that om the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily a parent, I
desire to have it understood that, I not lim-,
' it myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as scope of what is claimed.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a molding assembly, a panel haviigg an opening therein and provided at certain gas 0 said opening with inturned flanges, an a one-piece framing for the opening snapped upon the inturned flanges aforesai stituting a trim or moldin therefor.
2. In a molding assemb y, a panel having anopening therein and edges of said 0 of channel con guration, and a fr for the opening comprising molding formed m asin lesheet of metal and snugly said anges.
panel having an opening therein and provided at the edges of said opening with latermarginal flanges aforesaid.
ally pigecting flanges of substantially channel co guration, and a one piece fr for the opening snapped upon the channe flanges and constituting a trim or molding therefor.
4. In an assembly of the class desoribed,-a v v panel having an ,openin therein and provided at the edges of sai opening with open return bent portions having marginal flanges, and a one piece framing for the opening having portions conforming in shape to and embracing the open return bent portions and In testimony whereof I aflix v ALBERT BALL.
n within the and cone,
provided at certain ening with inturned flanges embracing 3. In an assembly of the class described, a. l I
my signature. 7
