v UNITED STATES moEArL nunornor MOSCOW, umon or SOCIAL IST sovmr Burn-rues 'nnvrcn non TREATING FIBERS Application filed December 30, 1929, Serial No. 417,463, and in the Marcus, 1929.
V The present invention relates to a device for treating fibers by impregnating and drying them without interrupting the worklng process. According to the invention, the material to be. impregnated is placed in moist condition in an impregnating device COI1S1St' ing chiefly of a partially hollow conveyor and press wormprovided with sievelike walls. The impregnating liquid is then pumped inside the conveyor worm'and thence flows on the conveyor path into the material'to be impregnated. The end of the worm acts as a press, the impregnated goods squeezed out in the diminishing 1nterst1ces between the threads of the worm so as to be just moist enough for further treatment at the end of the operation.
i This arrangement of the device affords the v advantage that the material while being conveyed comes in intimate touch with the impregnating liquidand is soaked very uniformly. Excessive impregnating liquid is preferably guided to a collecting container attached to the pump unit .and kept in constant circulation through the device, the continual flow of the liquid preventing the formation of sediments which affect the uniformity of impregnation. The form of the worm is not restricted to the one shown in the drawing, and it will often be suflicient to render only the shaft or the portion of the threads not facing the direction of conveyance} sievelike, and the press wormmay disclose either diminishing diameter or According to the invention, preliminary inoistening of the material takes place in a double-walled hopper having a perforated inner wall for discharging the preliminary liquid. The device according to the invention is preferably used for dyeing fibers and textile materials. r
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the'accompanying drawing show-,
being vide the cover of the collector 16 with diminishing thread or both.
21 and can be Union of Socialist Soviet Republics ing a diagrammatic view of two devicesconnected one behind the other.
Referring to the drawing, a double-walled hopper 1 having a perforated inner wall 2 and-a conection 3 for the piping is arranged on a jacket 4, the wall of which is partly sievelike. Inside this jacket a worm 5 is r0: tatably disposed in the ball bearings 6 and 7. he part 5a of the worm facing the hopper 1s the uniform conveyance of the material to be impregnated while the part 5?) of the worm decreases in diameter and thread towards the .end and serves for squeezing the impregnating liquid out of he worm may be driven by meansof the, pulleys 8 and 9. The journal 10 forming part of the conveying portion of the worm is hollow and-connected by a stufling box llvwith a stationary piping 12 provided with the i pressure gauge 13. i
xcessive impregnating 'liquidflows through the sievelike walls of the jacket .4 into a container 14 and thence over a sieve.15 into a collector 16. If the device isemployed for dyeing fibers and textile materials, it is advisable to proan opening 17 for the supply of dyes and to install inside an agitator 18 driven in any 7 suitable maner and a coil 19 for heating the liquid. The impregnating liquid is conveyed from the collector into the piping 12 by means of the pump 20 so that it is in continual circulation. o l
After the excess liquid has been s ueezed out of it, the material drops into a breaker passed again through a similar. deviceto be soaked again or rinsed in water, whereupon it will drop into a breaker 22 85 and finally on to a conveyor 23 which carries it away for further treatment.
The preliminary moistening of the material within the hopper serves'the purpose to insure uniform impregnation by the liquid. N
hollow and sievelike and serves for 55,
the material treated. to
'part'of the collector 16 The preliminary moistening takes place in the double-Walled hopper l, the inner wall 2 of which is perforated. The liquid for preliminary moistening enters the hopper 1 by means of the connection 3; it passes through the holes of the inner wall 2 into the dry fibers. If there are two devices according to the invention connected one behind the other, the second one being used for rinsing the impregnated fibers, it will be advantageous to take the liquid assembled in the collector 16 of the second device for preliminary moistening. For this purpose the lower has a piping 24 provided with a valve, said piping being connected with the connection 3 of the hopper 1 by means of not shown pipings and a pump likewise not shown in the drawing. A pipe 25 arranged in the upper part of the collector 16 serves as overflow-pipe and for discharging the impurities settling on the surface of the rinsing liquid. The rinsing liquid is pressed by a pump 20 from any container (not shown) into the second device.
I claim 1. In a device for treating fibers, the combination with a tubular housing, of a screw conveyor rotatively mounted in said housing, means to deliver material to be treated into said housing, means to deliver a treating liquid to said material in said housing, one portion of said conveyor being adapted to compress said material, means to collect the eX- cess liquid from said housing, means to pump said liquid back into said housing, and means raiaaea mounted in said housing, one portion of said conveyor being cylindrical, the other portion being tapered and adapted to compress said materials, said conveyor being provided with a plurality of apertures, means to deliver an impregnating liquid-to said material through said conveyor, an outer jacket for said housing adapted to collect the excess liquid from said material in said housing, and means to return said liquid into said housing.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
to loosen said compressed material from said conveyor.
2. In a rials, the combination with a perforated tubular housing, of a screw conveyor rotatively supported in said housing, means to deliver a fibrous material into said housing, means to deliver a treating liquid to said material in said housing, one portionof said conveyor being adapted to compress said material, an
a material in said housing, means to deliver a material to be treated in said cylindrical portion, means to add a treating liquid to said material, means to collect the excess of said liquid from said perforated housing, means to deliver said excess liquid back into said housing, and a beater adapted to loosen said material from said compressed portion.
4. In a device for treating fibrous mater1als, the combination with an inner housing, of a hollow screw conveyor rotatively device for treating fibrous mate-
