Description

July 21, 1931. i H. FANTEL COMBINATION LAMP AND CLOCK SUPPORT Filed Dec. 19. 1930 M fiVENTOR ATTORNEY FFEQE UNITED STATES HENRY FANTEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINATION LAMP AND CLOCK SUPPORT Application filed December 19, 1930. Serial No. 503,541.
This invention relates to time keeping dement of the invention showing its applicavlces, such as clocks, and more particularly tron.
to their supports, the structure being special- Fig. 2, is a front elevational view of the 1y adapted for use in connection with a night same. 6 lamp. F 1g. 8 1s a partial vertical sectlonal view 55 The difficulty encountered in ascertaining taken through the shade, showing a clock atthe time at night is well known and overtached, and drawn to an increased scale.
come only by maintaining an objectionably Refe ring in greater detail to the draw strong light or the inconvenience of cau ing ings the numeral 5 designates in general the a lamp to glow while the hour is observed, all base, of an ornamental, seml-portable hand of which are annoying to an invalid r tired lamp, patterned in the similitude of an oil person in the r om, burning lamp, provided with a handle 6 and While it is known that clock dials have pseudo wick adjusten'l, above which is carbeen made with luminous numerals, the light led a Socket 8 to receive a chimney 9. giving properties are ordinarily evanesce t, In the present case an electric current is gradually weakening until total failure 00- entered through a conductor 10 to pass to an curs, 1 candescent bulb 11 disposed within the It is als kn wn that a t ad b t di chimney 9 and provided with a switch, actulight in a sick roo or le in cha b ay ated by the knob 7, by which the lamp is con- 2U be maintained indefinitely thout disccqntl'OllGd, prererably giving full, moderate 01 fort or inconvenience to the occupant. dim light as may be desired.
It is therefore an object of the present in- The chimney shown is of the usual shape, vention to utilize the light rays of a lamp belng cylindrical at its upper portion, blendby causing a portion of them to pass through 111g into a bulbous main portlon and then the translucent dial of a clock carried by the Contracted to engage closely in the socket 8. lamp in such manner that the exact time can Engaging the chimney, at the upper part be read without difficulty from even a re- Of Its bulbous p r ion, is a ring 12 rigidly mote point. connectedto a similar but slightly larger A further feature is in the provision of g (1153305661 thereilbOVe, y it plurality a translucent shade, supported directly by Of pa i b s 4. 30 a lamp, preferably adjustable as the elful- T PD 2 1S v l p d 111 a thin gence f its rays th h d h i a t casing 15 by which is attached the upper edge ranged as a dial, and carrying a clock-w k of a COIllCELl or polygonal pyramidal frustrum mechanism including hands to pass over the Shade lls broad base extendmg down" di l i th usual wardly to enclose the bulbous portion of the Another aim is to produce a useful attach imn y. ment of the class described capable of 0011- h Shade may be of any suitable material, gruous application to an eletric bulb direct p q 1f pr f rr d, eXcept for a panel poror to a transparent guard used as a chimney U011 as later Seen- Y for an electric lamp or a lamp of the oil burn- The lower Fldge the Shad? 15 e ing type, the invention residing in the clock clamped to r1119; by encloslng caslng Support 18Llk1old1ng t llre material taut.
' These advantageous objects are attained h i porno-n 2 oval 111 plan b the novel desi 'n construction and arslo-wn 1n drawmgs or of any d 3 e 1 sired 1n practice, and of any diameter wlthiangement of parts hereinafter described in in the capacity of the shade, is translucent detall, and mw 1n the acqompenylns and provided at its marginal edge with a sedraWi g constituting materlal P of ries of marks 21,indicating minutes arranged the disclosure, and 1n whlchz in groups of five, while adjacently therewithl) Fig. 1, 1s a top plan view of an embodiin are numeral 22 indicating hours.
At the center of the dial thus formed is a disc 23 through which extends the spindles 24 of a clock-works mechanism 25, secured in any suitable manner to the interior of the shade, and actuating hands 2627, respectively minute and hour, which operate over the dial.
In order to maintain the shade in equilibrium a counterweight 28 may be attached to the interior of the shade at a point opposite the clock.
It will be obvious that the ring 12 may be applied directly to a naked bulb in case the chimney is not required, and that other IIIOCll iications and changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims and which do not require the exercise of invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination of a clock having an outwardly flanged translucent dial over which the clock hands travel, said dial constituting an integral partof an annulus, a lamp, and means on said annulus to engage sai d lamp circumjacently whereby light may pass through said dial.
2. The combination with a clock-works mechanism, a conical annulus carrying said mechanism, a transparent dial integrally formed on said annulus relative to said mechanism, and means to engage said annulus to surround a lamp so that light therefrom may pass through said dial.
3. In combination with a lamp shade, of a clock-works fixed to the inner surface of said shade, and a dial for said clock-works integral with the shade, said dial being translucent and extending circumjacently beyond the space occupied by said clock-works.
4. In combination with a lamp shade, of a clock-works fixed to the inner surface of said shade, and a dial for said clock-works integral with the shade, said dial being translucent and extending circumjacently beyond the space occupied by said clock-works and a counterbalance for said clock-works fixed to said shade.
5. In combination with a conical shade for a portable lamp, of a clock-works fixed within said shade on one side, a counterbalance on the opposite side, a transparent panel in said shade to register with said clock-works, a clock dial inscribed on said panel, said panel being of greater diameter than said clockworks, and hands actuated over said dial by said clock-works.
Signed at New York, in the county and State of New York, this 13th day of November, 1930.
HENRY FANTEL.
