Description
combination of elements 2'5 Patented July 14, 1931 PATENT OFFICE JOHN YII-VIIOLTZMAN, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
DOORLOCK- Application "filed. May '14, 1-925. Serial No. 30,177.
This invention relates to combined key and knob actuated locks, such as are used on the doorsof buildings to attain exceptional safety. I I p I One of the objects is to provide a lock embodying a'curved bolt, pivoted at its axis within the lock casing, to engage with a pair ofspaced keeper lugs in an unusually secure manner.
It is a further feature to produce a lock having an 'arcuatevboltmovable in a circular path, and which, when in an engaged po-' sition, cannot be retracted by other than its key or knob, except by actual rupture of its parts. I
Another aim is in the provision of an essentially inexpensive lock comprised of few and simple parts, not readily liable to become disordered, proportioned -,to provide adequate strength 'andpresent an attractive appearance.
These and other approved features are accomplished by the present construction and V hereinafter described and illustrated in the associated drawings, constituting a material part of this disclosure, and in which:
Figure 1 is a partialbottom plan and partial sectional view of a lock made in accordance with the invention, the section being taken on line 1--1 of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view ofYthe same,'taken on line 22 of Figure 1, showing its-application. 35
F1 re 3 is a plan view of the lock as 'engage with itskeeper. v
In the drawings the numeral: 10 designates a fragmentary portion of a door and 11 the casing jamb thereof, this jamb having rigidly secured toit a keeper plate 12 having a right angled flange 13 set in the front edge of the jamb and fastened byscrews 14.
The keeper is of considerable length to ad-' 1 mit of firm engagement and is provided with 4.5
apair of outstanding integral lugs 15 ar rangedinspaced angular relation, as shown best inFigure 3, these keeper lugs having circular openings '16, and their outer surfaces are curved toaradius from thelcenters of the openings.
-T he lock is composed of a'hollow body having an outer plate 17, containing a de pressed panel 18, side walls 19', joined by "a straight right angled rear wall 20 and a r thickened arcuate front wall 21, which isalso curved transversely to present ahol'low semicircular extending portion terminating 'in'a flange 22 level with the edges of the side and rearwalls. I p p Rising centrally from the casing plate 17 is an integral post 23 fitted to receive a screw 24 in its outer end by which is secured a plate 25 covering the open-under side'of the caslng.
The casing body is secured by screws 26 passed through opening' 27 in the plate 17 as usual.
A raised surface finished boss 28 is disposed centrally on the plate17, at the axis of the curved front 21 and 'revolubly-mounted on a stud 29 set therein is a hub 30 having anextending arm 31, car'ryinga curved bolt 32 of circular cross section, this 'boltbeing freely movable within "the curved space bounded by the wall 21.
In the curved front portion of the lock casing are a pair of spaced radial openings 33, receptive of the lugs 15 the bolt, when in aniengaged position, passing through the openings 16 in bothof thelugsconstituting an unbroken bar member, positively securing the lock casing to the keeper in an unusually eifective manner.
the casing tolimit the travel of the arm 31 when in a forward position.
Motionis communicated to the bolt by means of a thin flat link '35pivoted bya crank pin 36 to the hub 30 at a point ofiset to its center, the other end of the link being similarly pivoted by a pin 37 to a block 38 slidably mounted on a rod 39 set in grooves 40 and 41 formed respectively in pads 42 and 13 integral with the casing plate 17 'adjacent one side of the lock,'as best shown in Figure 1.
Extending from the block 38, towards the center of the casing, are .a'pair of spaced lugs 44 having adjacently bevelled surfaces incline'cl towards a central recess 45.
A hollow boss extends outwardly from the center of the panel 18, near the rear portion of the lock casing, and revoluble therein is a sleeve 47 having an opening and fixed at the outer end of the sleeve is the hollow hub 46 of knurled knob 50, this hub being seated on the boss with which it corresponds. A thin fiat rectangular stem 48 is guided in the opening of the sleeve 47 and hollow hub and is freely rotatable therein.
Fixed on the inner projecting end of the sleeve is a washer-like plate 51 having diametrically opposed arms 52 and 53 in which are secured headed studs 54 normally maintained in the central longitudinal plane of the casing by reason of their contact with the arm 55 of a spring 56 coiled around a pin 57 fixed in a pad 58 on the inner surface of the casing plate 17, another arm 59 of the spring being seated against the casing rear wall 20.
It will now be seen that upon rotating the knob 50, in clock-wise direction, the arm 53 will engage the rear lug 44, causing the block 38 to slide on the rod 39, and, due to the link connection 35, retract the bolt 32 from the keeper lugs, by rotating it on the pivot 29.
Obviously a reverse movement of the knob will cause the bolt to move into an engaging position.
The opposite end of the stem 48 is held in a conventional cylinder lock 60, set in the door 10 and actuated by a key 61, the lock being held by theusual fastening means as shown and may be of preferred type.
In order to positively retain the bolt in locked or unlocked position, the hub 30-is provided in its periphery with two notches 62 and 63, engag'eable with either of which is a detent 64 carried at the end of an arm 65, pivoted on a pin 66 near the rear of the lock casing, this detent arm being pressed inwardly against a limit pin 67 by a pair of opposed leaf springs 68located by a pin 69, one of the leaves making contact with the side wall of the casing and the other bearing against the arm 65.
Immediately prior to movement of the block 38 by the arm 53, theopposite arm 54 engages the inner surface of the detent arm 65, withdrawing the detent from the notch 62 and further rotation of the stem 48, either by the knob 50 or key 61, releases the detent to engage the notch 63 in a manner that will be clearly apparent, thus securing the bolt in either of its adjusted positions.
In order to operate the bolt by the key a plate 70 is fixed on the inner side of the door, adjacent the lock casing plate 25, in which latter plate is revolubly mounted a sleeve 71.
Fixed on the sleeve 71 is a lever 7 2 having atone end a raised offset finger 7 3 adapted to engage the lugs 44 and thereby move the block 38 in actuating the bolt by the key.
In this type of cylinder lock, the key 61 must make a full rotation before it can be removed from the lock, and in order to permit the lever to complete a full revolution, an opening 74 is formed through the arm 65 allowing the finger 73 to pass as it is rotated by turning the key.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple device for this purpose has been disclosed in the preferred form of its embodiment, but it is not desired to restrict the details to the exact construction shown, it being obvious that changes, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made withoutconflicting with the scope of the appended claims.
