This invention lrelates to mining machines and more particularly, but not exclusively, to coal mining machines of the wheel mounted universal type adapted to operate from the mine traokway.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved mining machine ot the wheel mounted universal type adapted to operate either as a vert-ical cutter or as a horizontal cutter. Another object of this invention is to provide an improved mining machine of the wheel mounted type having an adjustable cutter carrying head and improved and simplified mechanism for adjusting the head. Still another object of this invention is to provide an improved mining machinehaving an adjustable cutter carrying head and a pivoted cutter bar mounted thereon and swingable relative thereto and having improved and simplified mechanism for swinging tlle cutter bar about its pivotand for rotatingv the cutter carrying head. A still further object of this invention is to provide a. wheel mounted mining machine having improved mechanism for driving the truck wheels. A. still further object of this invention is to provide an improved, simplified, and exceedingly compactgeneral arrangement of parts whereby the machine may be operated with facility and expeditiously in mines having narrow or low veins. In this illustrative embodiment of the invention l have shown a coal mining machine generally designated 1,.the machine being of the so-called universal type mounted on wheels and operating from the mine track- Way. rllne machine 1 generally comprises a cutter carrying head or frame section 2, a motor section 3, and a section 4 housing the transmission mechanism for swinging the cutter bar about its pivot, for rotating the cutter carrying head, and for propelling the truck along the mine trackway, these elements all being mounted on a wheeled truck frame generally designated 5. The sections 3 vand 4 are rigidly .secured together and to the truck frame. The wheeled truck frame 5 specifically comprises parallel longitudinally extending angle members 6 held in rigid spaced relation by means of cross plates 7 and an end frame 8. rlhemotor frame section and the section 4 are rigidly bolted to the angle members 6. Secured to the cross plates 7 are angle members 9 having depending anges to which the axle boxes 10 for the axles 11 ofthe truckl wheels 12 are adjustably secured.
lIn specifically describing the cutting mechanism, which is substantially the same as that described in my copending application Ser. No. 619,839, filed Feb. 19, 1923, it will be noted that housed within the motor section 3 is a suitable driving motor 13, herein preferably of the usual reversible electric type, having a longitudinally extending horizontal armature shaft 14. As shown in Fig. 4, the forward end of the armature shaft 14 is journaled in a suitable ball Vbearing 15 carried by a detachable head member 16 suitably secured within the motor section 3. The forward end of the armature shaft 14 has secured thereto by a screw and key connection 17 a coupling member 18 having internal teeth 19 which cooperate with flutes 2O formed onv the shaft 21 alined with the armature shaft. The forward end of the shaft 21 is journa-led in a suitable ball bearing 22 carried by a cylindrical neck or supporting portion 23 alined with the motor axis and formed integral with the front motor head 24, the latter being rigidly secured to the lforward end of the motor secti on3 by means of usual bolts 25. The cy- *lindrical portion 23 forms a bearing for the cutter carrying head 2 in a manner to be later described, the cutter head being.rotat' able relative to the frame section 3. Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, it will be observed that the shaft 21 has formed integraltherewith at its forward end a clutch member 26 which is` adapted to be connected by means of ashiftable clutch member 27 to a clutch member 28 secured to a shaft 29 alined with the shaft 21. As illustrated, the clutch niember 26 is internally bored as at 30 to receive a ball bearing 31 within which and a bearing 32 carried by the frame section 2, the
shaft 29 is journaled. The shiftable clutch member 27 is adapted to be actuated longitudinally by means of a shipper yoke 33 aeiaaoe member 39 slidably mounted within a sleeve 40 disposed within a transversel).Y disposed bore 41 formed in the side of the frame section 2. Moreover, the sleeve 40 has sccured thereto by radially extending studs 42 an operating member or grasping portion 43 andone of the studs is provided with an inwardly projecting pin adapted to cooperate with a cam slot 45 formed within the member 39.' Furthermore, the member 39 is provided with an upstanding portion 46 having secured thereto at its upper end at 47 a transversely disposed rod 48 which is in turn secured at its opposite end within a cylindrical member 49 similar to the member 39 and likewise provided with an operating portion 50 disposed at the opposite side of the machine frame from the portion 43, thus enabling the operator-to actuate the lclutch from either side of the machine by -rod 48, consequently swinging the clutch shipper yoke about its pivot. As the above clutch operating mechanism is clearly described in my copending application Ser. No. 757,031, filed Dec. 19, 1924, further description of the same is herein deemed unnecessary.
As illustrated, the shaft 29 has formed thereon a bevel pinion 51 which meshes with a bevel gear 52 rotatable on an axis perpendicular to the axis of the armature shaft and journaled in suitable spaced alined ball bearings 53 suitably carried within the machine frame. The bevel gear 52 has preferably formed integral therewith a spur pinion 54 which meshes with a large spur gear 55. As clearly shown in Fig. 3, the gear 55 is provided with an annular sleeve 56 journaled on spaced alined bearings 57 surrounding and disposed coaxially with a stationary shaft or stud 58 threadedly connected at its opposite ends to the machine frame. As illustrated, the sleeve on the gear 55l is connected through a semi-permanent clutch connectionv 59 with the adjacent end of a similari-sleeve 60 on a cutter chain driv-y in sprocket 61, the ends of the sleeve 60 being similarly journaled on axially spaced ball bearings 62 surrounding the shaft 58. The bearings 62 are spaced from and located relative to the bearings 57 by a ange 63 on the shaft. Moreover,.the sleeve on the gear 55 and an adjacent portion'of the sleeve 60 are enclosed within'an outside sleeve member 64 suitably fixed to the frame. Disposed on the opposite side of the sprocket 61 from the bearing sleeve 64 is a bearing sleeve 65 fixed to the shaft 58 by a pin and slot connection 66. As shown, surrounding the sleeves 64 and 65 are bearingsleeves 67 on which an elongated plane cutter bar 68 is pivotally mounted. A cutter bit carrying cutter chain 69 is adapted to be circulated about the outer edges of the cutter bar 68 by the cutter chain sprocket 61. F rom the foregoing description it will be obvious that the cutter chain may be actuated by the motor or remain idle while the motor continuously operates.

As clearly shown in Fig. 3, disposed in the bore 73 formed in the boss 70 are axis ally movable clamp members 74, 75 having formed on their inner surfaces serrations 76 which are adapted to grip the opposite surfaces of the flange 72. Threadedly connested` to the clamping members 74 and 75 is a bolt 77 having right and left hand threads. It will be evident that upon rotation of|the bolt 77 the serrations lon the clamping members 74 and 75 are forced into engagement with the flange 72, .thereby rigidly locking the cutter bar in position.
In specifically describing the improved transmission mechanism housed within the frame section 4, it will herein be observed that the rear end ofthe armature shaft 14 of the driving motor (see Fig. 8) has suitably secured thereto `a spur pinion 80 which is-adapted to drive the truck wheel driving mechanism, the mechanism for swinging the cutter bar, and the mechanism for rotating the cutter carrying head and. including transmission gearing and controlling clutches substantially siinilarto those described in my copendiiig application Ser. No. 757,031 mentioned above, at a slow speed in one direction or at a fast speed in the opposite direction without reversing the motor. In specifically describing the fast speed transmission mechanism, it will be noted that the pinion 80 meshes with a spur gear 81 suitably journaled within bearings 82 carried by the frame section 4. The gear 81 has secured thereto and rotatable therewith a spur pinion 83 which meshes with a larger internal gear 84. The hub85 of the gear 84 is herein also journaled on a suitable bearing sleeve 86 carried by a sleeve clutch This locking member 87 keyed as at 88 to the longitudinally disposedl horizontal main transmission shaft 89, the latter being journaled at its opposite ends in bearings 90 and 91 suitably carried within the frame section 4. Moreover, it will be noted that the clutch member 87 'carries a series of friction clutch discs 92 which are interleaved with a corresponding series of vclutch discs 93 carried by the sleeve. of the internal gear 84. As shown, the sleeve of this internal gear is also provided with a plurality of radially located longitudinally extending slots 94 receiving radial fingers 95 formed on an interlocking member 96 keyed to the hub of a pinion 97 freely rotatable on the shaft 89. Interposed between these fingers 95 are friction clutch operating fingers 97a carried'by an axially movable cylindrical plane clutch operating member 98 disposed coaxially with and encircling the hub of the member 96. These fingers 97a extend longitudinally into contact with the adjacent end clutch Adisc of the clutch 92., 93. As shown, the
rear end of the shaft 89 has secured thereto by a key 99 a spur pinion 100 which meshes with a spur gear 101 journaled Within suitable bearings. 102 carried by the frame section 4. It will thus be evident that rotation of the armature shaft. 14 will be transmitted to the pinion 80, gear 81, pinion 83, internal gear 84,'.friction clutch discs 92, 93, clutch member 87, shaft 89, pinion 100, gear 101, pinion 103, internal gear 104, and the shaft 106 to rotate the latter at a predetermined high or fast speed whenever -the clutchcontrolling member 98 V"is operated to connect the clutches -92 and 93. It will further be noted that this speed may be lowered at will by slipping the friction disc 92, 93 of the clutch.
Now referring specifically to the slow speed transmission, it will be noted that when the clutch operating'member 98 is in its inoperative position and the clutch 92, 93 is released, power will still be transmitted through the interlocking member 96 and the pinion 97 'which is freely rotatable on the shaft 89. This pinion 97 in turn meshes with a gear 109 disposed coaxially with the gear 81 and nthis gear has secured thereto and rotatable therewith a pinion 110 which meshes with a spur gear 111 disposed coaxially with and rotatable on the shaft 89. The clutch operating members 98 and 122 may be operated to alternatively apply their respective clutches by means of suitable shipper mechanism which is clearly describedin my copending application' Ser.
No. 757,031 mentioned above. This shipper mechanism comprises, as clearly shown in Figs'S, 9.and 11, pivoted'clutch shipper members 124 and 125 each provided at one end with suitable rollers 126 adapted to engage theplane surfaces of theclutch operating members 98 and 122 respeotivel The outer ends of these shippers are a so provided with rectangular portions 127 and 128 having arcuate engaging surfaces and these portions register with slots 129 and 130 respectively formed in slidably engageable parallel rods 131 and 132 suitably guided in the machine frame at their opposite ends. These actuating rods are grooved or cut away at 133 and 134 to permit longitudinal j relative movement therebetween and are provided at their rear ends with semicircular screw portions 135 and 136 which have aeigaeoa ternal threads o f opposite pitch which engage the threads on the members.l The nut 139 has secured thereto a grasping or operating portion 140 conveniently located at the rear end 4of the machine frame. 1t will be observed that by rotating the handle 140 and consequently the threaded nut 139 engaging the threads formed on the rods 131 and 132 will cause the latter to simultaneously move in opposite directions and causing one of the friction mechanisms to be released while the other is applied, thereby preventing the simultaneous application of two speeds, i. e. the fast and slow speeds. 4
As clearly shown in 'F ig. 12 the rear end of the shaft 106 is fluted or grooved at 141 with which internal teeth 142 formed on the slidable clutch member 143 are adapted to cooperate. reverse bevels 153, 154 freely rotatable upon bearing sleeves 155 carried by a transversely disposed horizontal truck driving shaft 156, the latter being journaled at its opposite ends in suitable ball bearings 157 suitably carried by the gear housing 150. As illustrated, the hubs of the gears 153, 154 are disposed adjacent one another and have formed thereon gear clutch teeth 158, 159 adapted to be selectively connected by a shiftable clutch member160 with a clutch member 161 herein preferably formed integral with the shaft 156 intermediate the ends thereof. A shipper Cyoke 162 engages the clutch member 160 an is secured to a vertical shaft 163 suitably journaled on the ygear housing 150. This shaft has secured thereto at its upper end an operating lever 164, the latter being adapted to be held in its different adjusted positions by means-of a latch pivoted on the lever 164 and engageable with a notched selectively throwing the clntch member 16Cl in opposite directions into operative engagement with either of the clutch members 158, 159, the shaft 156 may be driven in opposite directions by the gear 152 at either a fast or a slow speed.
As clearly shown in Figs. 12 and 13, the shaft 156 has secured thereto at one end he shaft 145 is iuted orthereof by a screw and key connection 167 a sprocket 168. The sprocket 168 is Vconnected by an endless chain connection 169 and a sprocket 170 keyed to one end of a horizontal transversely disposed shaft 171 disposed parallel with and below the shaft- 156.`
The shaft 171 is suitablyejournaled in the bearing sleeve 172 carried within an adjustable bracket 173 suitably secured to the truck frame. It will also be observed that secured to the end of the shaft 171 opposite from the sprocket 170 is a sprocket 174 which is connected, as clearly shown in Figs." 1 and 2, by an endless chain connection 175 to a sprocket 176 suitably rigidly secured to the, rear axle-of the truck. The bracket 173 may be adjusted relative to the truck frame to vary the tension of the drive chains. The front and rear truck axles are connected in driving relation by means of a chain and sprocket connection 177. From the foregoing description it will be obvious that when the shafts 106 and 145 are connected in driving relation and when one or the other of the gears158 and 159 are connected to the shaft 156, the truck wheels may be driven at fast or slow speeds and in opposite directions.
In specifically describing the improved mechanism for swinging the cutter bar 68 about its pivot and for rotating the cutter carrying head 2, it will beobserved that rotatably mounted on the rear end of the, shaft 106 (see Fig. 8) is a chain sprocket 180. This sprocket has formed thereon external clutch teeth 181 which are adapted to cooperate with internal clutch teeth 182 formed on the slidable clutch member 143. When the clutch member 143 is slid forwardly out of engagement with the shaft 145, the teeth 182 engage the teeth 181 of the chain sprocket, thereby connecting the latter in driving relation with the shaft 106.-
Cooperating with the chain sprocket 180 is a flexible transmission chain 183 hereinv preferably of the loose link type and this chain cooperates with the cutter bar and the cutter carrying hdad in an improved and simplified manner and herein constitutes the final transmission element for effecting head rotation and bar swing. The intermediate portion of this chain 183 passes over the upper surface of the chain sprocket 1.80 downwardly from opposite sides thereof and around guide sprocket- sor sheaves 184 and 185 rotatably mounted on brackets 186 suitably rigidly secured to the rear cross plate 7 of the truck frame. The chain` passes around the guide sheaves 184 and 185 and then extends forwardly through the truck frame, the end portions of the chain crossing beneath themiddle of the machine as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and passing around angularly disposed guide sprockets -or sheaves 187, 188 suitably rotatably mounted on brackets 189 secured as by bolts 190 to the frame section 3.` The chain then passes around the guide sheaves 187 and 188 upward in opposite directions around'the top of circumferentially extending guiding grooves 1-91 and 192 formed on a cylindrical member 193 forming a part of the cutter carrying head 2, and this member is rotatablyv mounted on spaced alined ball bearings 194 carried by the cylindrical neckcarry hooks 200 which are connected to projecting lugs 201 formed on the clamping member 75 as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 5.
Improved means is provided for locking. the cutter carrying head against rotation and such means comprises a locking pin 202 (see Figs. 4, 6 and v7) rotatably mounted within a bore 4203 formed within a boss 204. herein preferably formed integral with the front motor head 24. As shown, the' boss 204 is' grooved to overlie a radially extending flange 205 formed integral with the cutter carrying head 2 to maintain the cutter carrying head in the desired plane of movement. From the foregoing description it will be obvious that -when the sprocket 180 is rotated in one direction, it being understood that the cutter` carrying head is locked in position by the pin 202 and that the locking clamp 74, 75 is released, tension is applied to one portion of the chain while the other porton thereof is paid out and the cutter bar may consequently be swung in one direction about its pivot at 'a predetermined speed, while if the sprocket 180 is rotated in an opposite direction the chain is drawn in in an opposite manner and the cutter barl may consequently be swung about its pivot in the opposite direction at a different speed. It will also be noted that when the cutter bar 68 is rigidly lockedto the cutter carrying head and that when the locking pin 202 is released, the chain 183 may be drawn in by the sprocket 180 to bodily rotate the cutter carrying head in one direction at a predetermined speed, and that when the other portion of the chain 183 is drawn in, the cutter carryin head may be rotated in an opposite direction at a higher speed, the pull of the chain on the laterally located guide sprockets 197 and 198 effecting rotation of the head.
Suitably secured tothe rear `truck axle is a frictional braking device 212 (see Fig. 2) and this braking device is adapted to be operated through suitable connections 213,
214, the rear end ofthe latter connection `being connected to an operating lever 215. This frictional braking device is adapted to control rotation of the truck wheels when the mining apparatus is moving over an inclined trackway and is also adapted to lock the truck wheels against rotation during the cutting operation.'`

y it being understood thatthe motor is running and the fast speed clutch 92,v 93 is'ap? plied and consequently Vthe shaft 145 is rotatlng at a hlgh speed. l When it is desired to drive the mining machine rearwardly along the trackway ata high speed, the bevel gear 154 is disconnected from the shafft 156 and the bevel gear 153 is connected to the shaft by means of its controlling clutch and consequently the truck wheels are driven in op-l posite directions. When the machine is disposed ad'acent the working face and if it 1s desire to make a horizontal or arc-wall cut, .the operator disconnects the bevel gear 154 from the shaft 156 and slides the clutch member 143 forwardly, disconnecting theV shafts 106 and 145 and connecting the sprocket 180 to the shaft 106. The cutter carr ing head is locked in position by the vlocking pin 202 with the cutter bar disposed in its horizontal or undercutting position as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the locking means 74, is released.
The desired portion of the chain 183 is then drawn in by the sprocket 180it being understood that the fast speed clutch 92, 93 is the clutch member 143 is slid rearwardlyA connecting the shafts 106, 145 in driving relation. The clutch teeth 158, 161 are then connected by the clutch member 160, thereby` connecting .the bevel gear 153 to the shaft 156, and upon application of the slow speed clutch 116, 117, the cutter bar is sumped into the coal at a cutting speed, the machine moving bodily along the trackway at that time. -At the completion of the sumping cut, the slow speed vclutch 116, 117 is released and the clutch member 143 is shifted forwardly, disconnecting the shaft 145 from the shaft 106 and connecting the sprocket 180 to the latter. The friction braking device 212 is then applied, holding the truck wheels .against rotation. The slow speed clutch 116, 117 is then applied and the cutter bar is swung about its pivot at a cutting speed, it being understood that the cutter bar lock is released at that time. 'After the swinging cut is completed the brake 212 is released, the slowspeed clutch 116, 117 is released, and the sprocket 180 is 161 are then connected to the clutch memyand u on application of one of the speed contro ling clutches, the cutter carrying head is rotated at the desired speed to the position .shown i'n Fig. 1, the cutter carrying head thereafter-'being locked in position. `'the cutter bar is sumped into t 'e coal at a v cutting speed. rlhe cutter bar is then swung downwardly at a cutting speed to thebottom of the mine and the bar is thereafter withdrawn at a cutting speed from the coal in a manner substantially similar to that heretofor described in regard to the horizontal cut. The cutter bar is thereafter swung upwardly to the full line position shown in Fig. l and the machine is moved rearwardly at a high speed along the trackway and away from lthe working face. These and other operations and advantages of my improved coal mining machine will be clearly apparent to those skilled in this art.
As a resultl of this invention it will be noted that improved and simplified mechanism is provided for rotating the cutter carrying head and for swinging thepivoted cutter bar wherein a single final transmission chain is utilized It will further be noted that by utilizing the .single final transmission chain for rotating the cutter carrying head and for swinging the cutter bar all complicated mechanism is eliminated, the machine being of exceedingly simple and rugged character especially adapted to the severe mining conditions encountered.
While I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms Without departing flrom its spirit orthe scope of the appended' c alms.
What I claim as new and desire to secure' by Letters Patent 4is 1. In a mining machine, the combination ofia body, a cutter carrying head rotatably mounted on said body and having a kerf cuttin cutter bar mounted thereon', a motor in sai body, and means driven by said motor for rotating said head to change the plane of\ operation of said bar comprisinga rotatable member and a flexible transmission element cooperating therewith and operatively connected to said head.
2. In a mining machine, the combination of a body, a cutter carrying head rotatably mounted on said body and having a pivoted cutter mo'unted thereon and swingable relative thereto, a motor in said body, and means driven by-said motor for rotating said head comprising a rotatable member and asingle flexible transmission elementhaving an intermediate portion engaging said member and end :portions connected to said head.

In a mining machine, the combination of a body, a cutter carrying headrotatably mounted on said body and having a pivoted .cutter mounted thereon and swingable relative thereto, a 'motor in said body, and means driven by said motor for rotating said head comprising a rotatable member, a flexible transmission element cooperating therewith and operatively connected to said head and constituting the final transmission element for effecting head rotation, and means for rotating said member at different speeds to efiectrotation of said head at correspondsite directions for effecting rotation of said .head at corresponding speeds in opposite directions. v l

In a mining machine, the combination of a truck supported body, a cutter carrying head rotatably mounted on said body about a horizontal axis and having a pivoted cutter mounted thereon and swingable relative thereto, a motor in said body, and means dri-ven by said motor for rotating said head about its axis comprising a member rotatable at a slow speed in one direction and at a higher speed `in the opposite direction and a iexible transmission element cooperating therewith and operatively connected to said head.
14. 1n a mining machine, the combination of a truck supported body, a cutter carrying head rotatably mounted on said body, a motor in said body and having a pivoted cutter mounted thereon and swingable relative thereto, and means driven by said movhorizontal motor in said body having its axis extending longitudinally of the machine, and means driven from the rear end of said motor for rotating said head comprising a rotatable member and a flexible .transmission element cooperating therewith.

In a mining machine, the combination of a truck supported body, a cutter carrying head rotatably mounted on said body and having a pivoted cutter mounted thereon and swingable relative thereto, a horizontal motor in said body having itsaxis eX- tending longitudinally of the machine, and means driven from the rear end of. said motor 'for rotating said head comprising a rotatable member and a single flexible transmission element having an intermediate portion engaging said member and end portions connected to said head.

In a mining machine, the combination of a truck supported body, a Cutter 'carrying head rotatably mounted on said body and having a pivoted cutter mounted thereon and swingable relative thereto, a horizontal motor in said body having its axis extending longitudinally ot the machine, and means driven by said' motor for rotating said head at different speeds in opposite directions comprising a rotatable member and a flexible transmission element cooperating therewith.

In a mining machine, the combination of a truck supported body, a cutter carrying head rotatably mounted on said body and-having a pivoted cutter mounted thereon and swingable relative thereto, a horizontal motor in said body having its axis extending longitudinally of the machine, and in eans driven by said motor for rotating said head at different speeds in opposite directions comprising a rotatable member and a single flexible transmission element having an intermediate portion engaging said member and end portions connected to said head.

In a mining machine, the combination of a body, kerfcutting mechanism carried thereby including a pivoted cutter bar swingable in a vertical plane to cut a vertical kerf, a motor, and means driven by said motor for swinging said bar about its pivot comprising a rotatable operating member and flexible swinging means having end portions operatively connected to said bar and an intermediate portion engaging said rotatable member.

Ina mining machine, the combination 0f n. body, kerf cutting mechanism carried thereby including a pivoted cutter bar swingable in a vertical plane to cut a vertical kerf, a motor, and constantly operative means driven by said motor Jfor swinging said bar about its pivot in opposite directions comprising a rotatable operating member and flexible swinging means having end portions connected to said bar and an intermediate portion engaging said rotatable member.

In a mining machine, the combination of a body, a cutter carrying head rotatably mounted on said body and having a pivoted cutter bar mounted thereon, a motor, and mechanism driven `by said motor 'for swinging said bar about its pivot relative to said head while said head is held against rotation and for rotating said head when said bar is held against swinging movement relative to said head including a rotating meming and Hexible bar swinging means operaA tively connected to said head and bar and having an intermediate portion engaging said rotatable member.

In a mining machine, the combination of a body, a cutter carrying head rotatably mounted on said body and having a pivoted cutter bar mounted thereon, a motor, mechanism driven by said motorvfor swinging said bar about its pivot relative to said head While said head is held against rotation and for rotating said head when said bar is held against swinging movement relative to said head including a rotating member and iexible bar swinging means operatively connected to said head and bar and having an intermediate portionengaging said rotatable member, and means operable at will 'for holding said head stationary or said bar against such swinging movement during either of said operations.

In a mining machine, the combination of a body, a cutter. carrying head rotatably mounted on the forward end of said body about a horizontal axis and having cutting mechanism thereon including a pivoted cutter bar swingable relative thereto and carrying orbitally moving cutting elements, a horizontal motor having .its axis extending longitudinally of the machine, mechanism driven from one end of said motor for actuating the cutting elements of said cutting mechanism in their orbits,and mechanism driven from the opposite end of said motor for effecting rotation of said head to change the plane of operation of said bar and for swinging said bar about its pivot relative to said head in any adjusted position of said head about its axis.

In a mining machine, the combination of a body, a cutter carrying head rotatably mounted on the forward end of said body about a horizontal axis and having cutting mechanism thereon including a pivoted cutter bar swingable relative thereto, a horimotor for effecting rotation of said head to change the plane of operation of said bar and for swinging said bar about its pivot relative to said head in any adjusted'position of said head about its axis.

In a mining machine, a Wheeled support, a machine body thereon, a cutter carryin head rotatably mounted on said body and iaving cutting mechanism thereon including a pivoted cutter bar svvingable relative thereto and carrying orbitally moving cutting elements, a horizontal motor having its axis extending longitudinally of said body, mechanism driven from one end of said motor for actuating the cutting elements of said cutting mechanism in their orbits, mechanism driven fromthe opposite end of said motor for effecting rotation of said head and for swinging said bar about its pivot relative to said head in any adjusted position of'said head about its axis, and mechanismdriven from the last mentioned end -of said motor for driving the wheels of said support.

In a mining machine, a Wheeled support,1a machine body thereon, a cutter carrying head rotatably mounted on `said body andA havingcutting mechanism thereon including a pivoted cutter bar swingable relaative thereto and carrying orbitally moving ,cutting elements, .a horizontal motor having its axis extending longitudinally of said body, mechanism driven from the front end of said motor for actuating the cutting elements of said cutting mechanism in their orbits, mechanism `driven from the rear end ofsaid .motor for eii'ecting rotation of said head and for swin ing said bar aboutits pivot relative to said head in any adjusted position of said head about its axis, and mechanism driven from the last mentioned end of said motor for driving the Wheels ot said support.

Ina mi ing machine, the combination of a body, a h ad rotatably mounted on said body and carrying a pivoted 'cutter' bar swingable relative thereto, a motor in said body, and means driven by said motor for effecting rotatidn of said head about its axis comprising a rotatable member and a Hexible transmission element cooperating With said head at' said member and engagin points offset from its axis o rotation.

In a mining machine, the combination of a body, a head rotatably mounted on said body and carrying a pivoted cutter bar swingable relative thereto, a motorin said body, and means driven by said motor for effecting rotation of said head about about its axis comprising a .rotatable operating member and flexible head rotating means including a flexible transmission element cooperating with -said member and having portions engaging said head at diametrically opposite points ofi'set from its axis 'of rotation.

In a mining machine, the combination of a body, a cutter carrying head rotatably mounted on said body, a motor in said body, and means driven by said motor for effecting rotation of said head .about its axis comprising a rotatable member and a iexible transmission element cooperating with said member and engaging 'said head at points offset from its axis of rotation and haying portions partially encircling said axis.

In a mining machine, the combination of a body, a'cutter carryinghead rotatably mounted on said body, a motor in said body, andmeans driven by said` motor for effecting rotation of said head about its axis comprising a rotatable operating member and fiexible rotating means'including a flexible transmissionv element cooperating with saidA member and having portionsengagingsaid n head at diametrically opposite points offset from its axis of rotation and portions partially encircling said axis.

In a mining machine, a Wheeled support, la machine body thereon, cutting mechanism including a cutter carrying head rotatably mounted in said body and having a pivoted cutter bar mounted thereon, a motor, mechanism driven by saidmotor for actuating'- said cuttingV mechanism, mechanism driven by said motor for effecting rotation of. said head and for swinging said cutterbar about its pivot in any adjusted position of s`aid head, mechanism driven by said motor-for driving 'the wheels of said .l support, and controlling mechanism' for said head rotating and bar swinging and said support wheel driving mechanisms pre- :venting connection of said head rotating and bar swinging mechanism and said wheel driving mechanism in driving relation with said motor except alternatively.

Ina mining machine, a Wheeled support, a machine body thereon, cutting mechanism including a cutter carrying head rotatably mounted on said body and having a pivoted cutter bar mounted' thereon and carrying orbitally moving cutting elements, a horizontal motor having its .axis extending longitudinally of the machine, driving connections for actuating the cutting elements of said cutting mechanism in their iorbits driven from one end of said motor, mechanism driven from the opposite end of said motor `for effecting rotationof said head and for swinging said cutter bar about its pivot in any adjusted position of said head, and mechanism driven by said motor for driving the Wheels of said support, said bar
