This invention relates to an animal toilet designed more particularly for they use of cats and dogs butpossibly adapted also for use by other animals. f
4 lll' An objectof the invention is to provide an inexpensive efiicient sanitary toilet device adapted for being permanently installed in the floor of a dwelling housey and to be` connected with the plumbing of the building in '7101v order to be usedto flush out the excrement deposited by the animalsconfned within the house. n w Y' y y Anotherobject of ltheinvention is to provide a device of thev class stated which ani-V `15 mals. may usewithout discomfortand with regard to which there will be nothingto which they object, thus providing a toilet device for .them which they may readily be trainedto use. y j
VAmong other objects of the invention are to provide a device of this character which will be an improvementupon others of its class with regard to;v general simplicity .of construction, one which may vreadily be 1nstalled, which will'not lmaterially d isfigure the appearance ofthe groom, and which w11l voperate ina more dependable efficient manner.
y'Other objects,-advantagesand features of invention may hereinafter appear.'
Referring tothe accompanying drawings which illustrate what is at present deemed to be a preferred embodiment ofi-the invention,
F 1 is a plan view of the toilet showing the same as it appears when installed in the floor of a ,dwelling rooml,
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line 2-2 ofFi.1.' Y'. p.
Refgerring indetail to the drawings, the toilet bowl may be designed in a variety of ways but is illustratedas a rectangular bowl or basin 5 which is fitted within a correspondingly shaped opening 6 in the lioor'7. Said bowl comprises an upper portion 8 shaped as a shallow rectangular basin and preferably havingaround itsv wall portion 9 an upstanding lip 10 which'projects sl1ghtv ly above the level ,of the surface of the floor 7 Around the lip 10 is preferably lpro-vided 50 a slope, chamfer or groove 12which gives a '.loILn'r 1930.` serial No. 434,015.
more ornamental appearance to the rdevice and avoids presenting a sharpk corner therearound.-
The toilet bowl r is provided with a transverse -cross wallportion which forms Lthe bottom of a relatively shallow depression 16 enclosed within thewall 4portion v9. In the central "portion of the wall 15'is located a rectangular opening 17 within which is fitted. a hingedly mounted plate 18,l said plate be` -ingrprovided with a number of perforations 19. Said plate is provided at one edge with Y hinges 20, and is also provided adjacent said edge with springs 21 whichnormally sup'- port it in a substantially horizontal position. Said springs 21 are shown as made yof wire loops each having at one end a prong 22V and `at the other end a prong 23 whereby itis held in place'betwe'en the bowl yand the per.- Y
forated pla-te 18.
Beneath said plate'llS the wall 25 forms the bottom `of the bowl receptacle 26, saidA re-V ceptacle 26 having a discharge passage 27 at one side thereof. Y Said wall v has a sloping l innerfside with the discharge openings 36,
downwardly to direct the stream of water as desired.v This flush-out pipe is connected with the supply pipe l38,- the water Asupply from said pipe 38 being controlled by a valve which is preferably operated by Yayertical push rod 41 having a-handle portion-42 at its upper end.l Said valve 40is provided with an operating arm43 to. which the lower end of said push rod 41 is pivoted, push crates in a channel`41a; .y
Said valve 40 is also provided Vwith a `downwardly extending l'arm 44 the latter arm being operatively'connected with -afbutton 45 by VVmeans of a rod 46, said button 45 being rod 41 opflush-out pipe 35 which is provided along its VSaidfoppenings being directed somewhat pivotally attached to the leegr a of the bowl by means of a screw pin and having a lateral arm 48 to which rod 46 is connected. 1n Fig. 2 the button 45 is shown in position to support the. plate 18, but when the valve is operated by the push rod 41 through the rod 4G said button is turned to permit the free end of the plat-e 18 to be depressed against the opposition of its supporting spring 21.
Means are provided whereby at the same time that the valve arm 44 turns the button 45 in the manner already described, it also depresses the plate 18 against the opposition of its supporting spring 21. For this purpose one of the hinges 2O comprises a pin 20a which is made fast to the lug 20?), said lug in turn being made integral with or in fixed. relation to the plate 18.
Said pin 20a has fixed to one end thereof an operating arm 20c and this operating arm is pivotally connected with one end of rod 50, the other end of said rod being pivotally connected with the valve arm 44. There is preferably a slotted foot 51 formed on the lower end of arm 20c in order to provide a lost motion connection between said arm 20c and the rod 50. ln putting the device into use it is not necessary to cover the same or any portion thereof with dirt or litter, because the animals will be trained to use it without this being done. lVhen it is desired to cleanse the toilet bowl the rod 41 is depressed thus opening 'valve 40. During the first part of the opening movement of valve 40, through the operating connection afforded by valve arm 44, rod 46 and the button 48, 'he button 45 is turned to the releasing position. By the time the button is thus released the rod 50 has moved to the limit of the lost motion connection with head 51 or arm 20c, and therefor during the final portion of the opening movement of valve 40, said arm 50 causes the plate 18 to be depressed to the inclined position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 against the opposition of its sp1 o; 21.
The streams of water thus supplied from the perforations 36 of the pipe 1G will thoroughly cleanse the inclined plate 18 causing the eXcrelnent to be flushed out through the toilet in the manner that wash-out toilets are flushed.
After the iushing operation has been completed the attendant will relieve pressure from the head 42 of the rod 41 to allow the spring 21 to restore the plate 18 to its normal position. As soon as this has occurred the attendant will pull rod 41 up to the limit lof its upward movement thus com'- pletely closing valve 40 and at the same time turning button 45 into position to support the free end of plate 18.
