Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABEL B. DAVIS, OF LYNNFELD, MASSACHUSETTS..
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-SCREENS.
Specification formin g part of Letters Patent No. 181318, dated August 22, 1876; application filed v May 17, 1876.
- tudinal Vertical section through the center of the same Fig. 3, detail to be referred to.
My invention relates to an adjustable screen, which may be readily applied to windows of varying wid ths; and consists in a frame composed of two portions, one of which is provided with tubes or sockets for the reception of the end of the other portion, provided with pins or projections moving in slots formed in the tubes or sockets, by which the two portions are kept in line with each other when brought together by pres'sure applied to compress the springs, and when separated by the expansion of the springs on removal of the said pressure, the force of the springs serving to keep the ends of the frame snugly against their bearings when brought into the desired position.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of' the said drawings is represented my improved frane, composed of two independent portions, A B, of like construetion, each portion consisting of two horizontal strips, a a, united to the opposite ends of a vertical strip, b. Within the inner or adjacent ends of the horizontal strips a, of each portion of the frame, are formed circular holes c, extending longitudinaily therein, the diameter ot' each hole being greater, from the end 5 to the point 6, than from the point 6 to the point 7, by which eonstruction a shoulder, 6, is formed. Within the two holes' of the two adjacent horizontal strips a is placed a spiral spring, d, the ends of the spring abutting against the shoulder 6. This spring is kept from moving laterally' out of place by means of a rod, e, passing centrally through it, the
rod being of such length that its ends will remain in 'the contracted portions 6 7 of the holes c. To the inner end of each horizontal strip a of the portion B of the frame is secured one end of a tube or socket, G, the other 'end of which extends over and incloses the inner end of the adjacent horizontal strip of .the portion A of the frane. Each tube or socket is provided with a longitudiial slot, f, for the reception of a pin or projection, h, by which Construction the two portions A B of the frame are kept in line as they are moved to and from each other. 'The netting i is intended to be tacked to the vertical sides b,
and to the horizontal strips a, excepting the bring the vertical sides b of the frame to a firm and even hearing. l is a knob or handle, by which the portion B of the frame is drawn toward the portion A, When the latter is fixed in place.
` What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The portions A B of the frame of a window-screen, provided with the holes c, having the shoulders 6, and connected by the tubes or sockets C, in combination with the springs d, rods e, slots f, and pins h, construeted, arranged, and Operating substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
2. The netting t', with its strips of tape k, in combination with the two portions A B of the frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Witness my hand this 12th day ,of May, 1876.
ABELB. DAVIS. In presence of N. W. STEARNS,
P. E. TESGHEMACHER.
