.IMPROVEMENT IN VEHICLE HEAD-BLOCKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 81,257, dated August 22, 1876; application filed May 6, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ZENO FISCHESSER, of West Sonora, in the county of Preble and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Blocks for'Vehicles and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

This invention relates to that class of vehicles in which a head-block resting upon the fifth-wheel, and supporting the axle-spring, is employed; and my improvement consists in making the head-block in two pieces, which are pivoted together, and held in their relative positions by rubber springs, iny object being to reduce the strain thrown upon the perch when either side of the wagon-bed is depressed, on account of the inequalities of the road, ogthe saltatory motinl ofithewagon.

To enable otterssrinec 1n the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I would thus proceed to describe it, re-

ferring throughout to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved head-block. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, showing a portion of the perch.

Corresponding letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.

My head-block is made in two pieces, the lower one, A, being of the ordinary shape, which rests upon and is secured to the'fifthwheel, and the upper one, B, of the shape represented, conforming upon its upper surface to the elliptical or semi-elliptical spring that supports the wagon-bed. semicircular cars a are formed upon the top of the piece A at itscenter, between which fits a central circular web, formed bycutting away each side of the piece B. This makes a knuckle-joint, which is united and pivoted by a pin or bolt, b. On each side of the joint recesses are made opposite each other in the pieces A and B, into which are fitted solid rubber springs 0.
