This invention relates to roll holders for" photographic apparatus and particularly to anadj ustable roll holder which may be bodily inserted in ori'emoved from themagazine of a photographic apparatus. An object of this invention is to providean improved'adjustable roll holder. Another object is to, provide improved means for mounting a roll holder. Another object is to provide improved roll holder and mounting structures which permit the roll holderto be positioned in the apparatus in such a manner that the roll holder may be readily withdrawn therefrom for purposes of adjustment and for changing rolls, and readily-reinserted in an operative position. Anotherobject is to provide an improved roll holder which;may be readily mounted on the sheet holder of a reversingcamera to provide an improved structure. Referring now to the drawings in detail, there is shown a roll holdercomprising a base adjustably mounted on the said base member. A supporting or guide member on which the roll holder is adapted to be mount ed is indicated by tlienumeral 14.

a single piece of sheet metal bent to provide a channel-shaped member having side walls 15 provided with flanges 16 projecting inwardly in'parallel relation to the web 17 of the channel. The width of the guide member 20 and the distance between the bottom walls of the grooves formed in oppositely disposed members 30 are such that normally the outer edges of the flanges 21 lie very close to or in contact with the bottom walls of the said grooves and a slight movement of the leg members toward each other is sufiicient to bind the members 30 upon the said flanges. For the purpose of moving the leg members toward each other and thus locking the supporting arms in position on the base. a threaded bolt 31 and thumb nut 32 are provided. The bolt or threaded rod extends through concentric circular bores in the leg bases 24 and 25. A. head prevents the bolt from moving bodily through the slot when the thumb nut is screwed down, and a pin or other fastening means adjacent the head prevents its rotation when the thumb nut is turned. The leg adjacent the threaded end of the bolt may slide upon the bolt under the pressure of the thumb nut. As the leg movement necessary to accomplish looking or binding is very slight it is not necessary that special resilient material be used; the arm may be constructed of any metal or composition which is ordinarily suitable for the eonstruction of roll holders.
The supporting member 14 comprises a suitable casting 33 having end walls provided with apertures through which attaching screws or bolts may be passed, and a guide member 34. The member 34 is preferably formed of a single piece of sheet metal which is suitably bent to form rectangular side portions which may be seated within the rectangular channels in the base member 10. The face of themember33 which is in contact with the member 34 is slightly narrower than the said member 34 and thus the rectangular side portions of the member 3-4 may project beyond the side edges oi the member .33. The members 33 and are preferably of'the same length as the members 10 and 20, and the said members may be assembled with all of their adj accnt end edges in alignment.
A pin 35 which is rigidly mounted on the member adjacent an end thereof projects within and lies in contact with the end wall of a slot formed in the base 10 when the end edges of the various members are in alignment as described above, and serves as a stop member for limiting the movement of the base 10 on the support 14.
The member 14 may be rigidly mounted within the photographic apparatus as shown for example in Figures 6 and 7 where the roll holder is shown applied to a sheet holder of a reversing camera. The sheet holder 36 has a light tight casing 37 formed on an end thereof adjacent the receiving end of the mask 40. A cover 41 is removably mounted on the casing 37 adjacent an open end. The roll holder guide 14 is mounted within the casing by means of screws 42 which extend through the threaded apertures in the end walls of the member 33, and extend substantially parallel to the side walls of the casing and the slit in the mask 40.
The supporting arms 12 and 13 may be slidably mounted on the base 10 and spaced sufficiently far apart that a roll 43 carried by a spool 44 maybe positioned between them with the axis of the spool in alignment with the centers of the annular shoulders 23. The spool carrying the roll may be placed between the arms 12 and 13 as described and the arms may then be moved toward each other until the annular shoulders enter the central opening in the spool or the recesses provided in opposite ends of the spool for such purpose. After the spool has been properly mounted on the arms, the arms and spool may be moved simultaneously to their proper positions on the base and locked in such positions by means of the thumb nuts 32. The'assembled roll holder with the roll mounted thereon may then be inserted in the casing through the opening which is normally closed by the cover 41 with the rectangular shoulders of the guide member 14 seated in the rectangular grooves of the base 10. The roll holder is moved inwardly until the base 10 engages the stop pin 35 after which the cover 41 may be mounted in position on the casing and the sheet material of the roll threaded through the mask and the machine is ready for operation.
Since the pin 35 is fixed relatively to the sheet holder and relatively to all points on the base 10 when the base is in engagement with the said pin, the position of the roll on the base 10 determines its position on the sheet holder and thus the roll may be adjusted to its proper position before it is inserted in the casing. For various widths of sheet material and for various types of masks which may be used with the holder, it is necessary that the roll be adjustable to a number of difierent positions on the holder and for aiding in making the proper adjustments, the base and arms of the roll holder may be provided with calibrated scale and pointer means. A holder provided with such scale and pointer means for use with different sizes and types of rolls and masks forms the subject matter of a separate application.
When it is desiredto alter the position of the roll on the holder or to change rolls it is merely necessary to remove the cover 41., grasp the handle 45 attached to the roll holder and draw the roll holder bodily out of the casing, when the proper change or adjustment may be made and the roll holder again engaged with the guide member FM and moved inwardly until contact is'made with the pin 35 as explained. The areas of the enholder in position on the guide in engagement with the pin 35. If desired, locking means of any well known type may be provided for further aiding in holding the roll'holder in position on the guide member.
A roll holder and supporting means ,constructed in accordance with. this invention has many practical advantages. The simple sliding connections between the various parts eliminate various expensive machined parts which usually form a part of adjustable structures, and permit a wide range of fine adjustments. Owing to the fact that the holder is slidable longitudinally of its axis for insertion or removal, a very small openin the magazine is required and the operator of a machine may ordinarily remove or insert the holder from a position beside the machine, while in some instances where holders of other types are used a large opening must be provided in the upper wall of the machine for the removal of the roll in a direction transversely of its axis and the operator must work from an inconvenient position near the top of the machine. Furthermore since the'holder is bodily removable and since means are provided whereby the posi-' tion of the roll on the holder base determines its position in the machine relatively to the sheet holder, all of the adjustments may be made in any convenient position for the op- 1 erator, while n some instances where holders of other types are used the holders are fixed in the machine and adjustmentsimust be made from inconvenient positions while the roll is in the holder. Since the roll holder isalso adjustable to receive various sizes of rolls'a single holder may be used for all of the various sizes of rolls used with any apparatus.
' The use of a holder constructed. according to this invention is conducive to the greatest etficiency of operation and economy of time and material.
From the foregoing it will be seen that there is herein provided apparatus which embodies the features of this invention and achieves the objects thereof. A roll holder is provided which is of simple and durable construction and inexpensive to manufacture, and by means of which rolls of sensitized sheet material may be quickly and accurately positioned in photographic apparatus. 7
As many embodiments may be made'of the above invention and as many changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter hereinhefore set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to beinterpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. r
I claim as my invention:
1. In photographic apparatus, a roll casing, a guide rail rigidly mounted within said casing and extending substantially parallel to a sidewall thereof, and a roll holder provided with a groove forthe reception of said guide rail mounted on said guide rail with the said" rail engaging the walls of said groove; said roll holder being slidably movable from substantially central position on said rail to a position in which the rail and groove walls are out of engagement. i
2. In apparatus of the class described, the
combination with a guide member, of a roll holder comprising a base provided with mean-s for engaging said guide member, a supporting arm, cooperating guide means on said arm and base for adjustably mounting said arm on said base, and means for increasing the frictional engagement between said cooperating guide means for locking said supporting arm in its adjusted position.
3. In apparatus of the class described, the combination with a guide member,of a roll holderrbase mounted thereon for reversible movement longitudinal-1y thereof, means for limiting the movement of said base in one direction, a pair of supporting arms for holding a roll, cooperatingguide means on said arms and base for adjustably mounting said arms onsaidba'se, and meansfor increasing the frictionalengagement between said cooperating guide means for locking said supporting arms in their usted positions.
4. In apparatus of the class described, roll supportingmeans comprising a guide rail, a base member provided with means for engaging said rail, a guide flange mounted on said base member, and a supporting arm provided wlth a groove for the receptlon of sald guide flange. 1
5. A roll supporting arm comprising a body portion adapted to receive an end of a' roll, spaced leg members provided with grooves in their adjacent faces mounted on said body portion, said grooves being adapted to cooperate with guide flanges, and means for moving said leg members relatively to each other to increase the frictional contact with the arms upon the flanges.
6. A roll holder comprising a base, oppositely disposed guide flanges mounted on said base, a supporting arm having spaced leg members provided with grooves for the reception of said guide flanges mounted for sliding movement on said base, and means'for moving said leg members to lock said supporting arm in position on said base.
