This invention relates to combination chair bed and particularly to one embodying few parts in its construction and arranged to quickly and easily fold in bed or chair form-' 1; ing position.

A particular object of the invention is to provide a device of the character referred to in which spring sections may be employed for the support of a mattress, the spring sec- 19 tions being foldable relativelyto each other and being arranged to be folded to a low position in the chair body so that the height of the chair seat is no greater than the seat of a chair in which a bed construction was not incorporated.

A still further object of my invention is to provide a combination chair and bed in which all of the parts will be compactly foldable with a minimum of exertion and time,

29 either to open the device up to bed forming position or to fold it away to provide a chair, when the bed is not in use. 7

To enable others skilled in the art to fully comprehend the underlying features of my invention that they may embody the same in the various modifications in structure and relation contemplated, drawings depicting a preferred form have been annexed as a part of this disclosure and in such drawings, similar reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, of which,

Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, a part of the chair body being shown in section to illustrate the use of my improved bed construction in combination therewith.

Figure 2 is a top plan view of a combination chair and bed constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being shown open to its bed forming position as illustrated in Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 and illustrates the method of supporting the seat of the chair from the bed forming springs, a part of this figure being broken away for the purpose of illustration,

and V Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in sectional elevation of the lower portion of the chair into which the bed construction has been completely folded.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 indicates generally a chair body consisting of the arm portions 6, front strip 7 and back '8, the chair being otherwise provided with a 9 respectively. To this'supporting angle strip 13, there is pivoted the inner frame legs 14 which at its mid portion is pivoted as at 15 to the inner spring frame 16, the upper end of the legs 14 being arranged to have M pivoted thereto, the end, of a link 17. w The frame which holds the usual spring 18 is arranged in two portions, an inner. spring frame 16 that has been previously mentioned and an outer spring frame 19. This spring frame being preferably made from angle iron and the ends of the frames being joined throughthe medium of the frame connecting pieces 20, the joint being made so that bothof the spring frames 16 and 19 may fold relatively to each other when the'bed is folded into position within the chair. j The frame connecting pieces 20 are joined by a suitable reinforcing cross bar 21 which is depressed throughout the greater portion of its length and is secured to the seat 22 of the chair through rthe medium of suitable straps 23. The ends of the links 17 as wellas the ends of the forward links 2 1- are joined as kit-25 in pivotal relation to the frame connecting pieces 20, the outer ends level, comfortable bed when the mattress is placed thereon.

The outer spring frame 19 also carries the auxiliary legs 29 which are pivoted to the frame as at 30 and to the seat 22 as at 31. The seat 22 is provided wit-h a block 32 which, through the use of apiece of fabric or any other hinging medium 33, is pivotally secured to the front strip 7 of the chair construction and through this medium is arranged to be folded into the position illustrated in Figure 4 after the bed has been lifted up and moved to its folded position Within the chair body.

It will be quite evident from the foregoing that Iii-ave provided a combination chair and bed construction in which the bed springs divided into suitable sections, can be folded in superposed relation within the chair body and through the medium of their pivotal conneotion, can be folded down into the body of the chair in their lowest position so that the seat of the chair is not raised to an extraordinary height.

It is also evident in a construction of this character that the fact that the chair also contains a bed construction is hidden due to the connection between the seat and the front strip of the chair, the seat being very rigidly supported at its frontand rear ends, thus preventing the sagging that occurs in some of the combination chair and bed constructions in use at present.

It is quite evident also that 'I have provided a combination constriction of the character referred to, which is compact and which can be folded or unfolded with a minimum of time and effort, and one in which no resistance is offered to the depression of the spring when the device is occupied .as a bed.

While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is A combination chair and bed comprising a chair, .a folda-ble seat therefor, an inner and an outer spring frame, links pivotally joining said frames, a reinforce bar connecting said links, means securing the reinforce bar to the chair seat, angle strips in the chair, front and rear links pivoted on the ends of said reinforce bar, floor engaging legs piv oted to and depending from the ends of said front links and also pivoted to the outer frame,links depending from the ends of said rear links and pivotally connected to the in TILLIE ARZT. a s]
