Description

June 23, 1931. MELLQR 1,811,473
TAP FOR SHOES Filed Nov. 18, 1929 INVENTOR I ATTORNEY l atentecl June 23, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GILMORE MANDELL MELLOR, OF OAK PARK, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN OAK LEATHER COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO TAP FOR SHOES Application filed November 18, 1929.
This invention relates to improvements in taps for use in the manufacturing and repairing of boots and shoes, and to the method of making the same.
An object of the invention is to provide a tap of a pattern for increased capacity and extended utility over taps of the present commercial patterns by including enough material for a half sole and a heel lift, the heel lift cut from one of either of the longitudinal ends of the tap.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tap of a pattern susceptible for either right or left shoe and for shoes of different toe configurations or styles, as for broad or pointed toe, the different toe patterns being presented at relatively opposite ends of the ta Another object of the invention is to provide a tap of ovate configuration, with one end broader than the other, providing a half sole for either right or left shoe for Various shoe sizes, and a heel lift, the heel lift being cut from one of either ends of the tap, depending on which end is used for the half sole.
Various other features and advantages of the invention are more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawing in which the figure represents a plan view of the improved tap.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a blank cut from a stock of sole leather or other suitable material into an oval form with one end broader than the other, providinga tap for a half sole and a heel lift. The differently dimensioned opposite ends 2 and 3 for an area or portion indicated by dotted lines 44, are of an outline comprehensive for a variety of different shoe toe sizes and dimensions. These end portions as defined by the dotted lines are also representative of sections to be cut from the blank for use as a heel lift.
It is primarily intended that one of either of the end portions of the blank be utilized for a heel lift and the intermediate portion and the second end portion for a half sole, the end portions alternately available for a heel lift depending upon which end is se- Serial No. 407,870.
lected to be a part of the half sole. Thus the blank forms one of two different sizes or outlines of half sole and one of two different sizes or outlines of heel lift. The curvilinear outline at the opposite sides of the major axis are symmetrical so that the outer edges along the forepart of each side of the minor axis are suitable for both right and left outer edges of a shoe.
The blank for merchandizing thus combines a half sole and a heel lift, and by cutting across the line toward one end it is divided for the relatively different size selections of half sole and heel lift.
It will be recognized that the utility of the tap is greatly enhanced over the prevailing commercial patterns, and although containing a slightly greater amount of stock over taps solely for half sole service, the slight addition on account of its alternate or interchangeable application to meet the various sizes of shoes or different toe styles is of material advantage to the trade as it materially reduces the waste or matching to meet the requirements toward more accurately fitting the half sole to a shoe without excessive trimming or carrying in stock an extra quantity of different sizes and outline of half sole taps which would more than offset the cost of the additional quantity of stock employed in making up the pattern. The addition, however, is ample for use as a heel lift, particularly to meet the requirement for ladies shoes having covered wood heels capped by a leather lift which are frequently renewed on each pair of shoes. The end portions may also apply for tip repairing on Womens shoes.
The product in factory production minin 1 izes the number of dies necessary and the ambunt of stock now required to be carried on multiple dies in order to serve the trade with the various patterns now needed to cover the varied lines of womens shoes made.
Having described my invention, 1 claim:
A tap for use in the manufacture or repair of shoes comprising a blank of ovate outline forming a composite half sole and heel lift,
the intermediate portion of said blank with one end portion forming a tap sole for attachment to a pointed toed shoe and the other end, With the intermediate portion, forming a tap sole for attachment to a blunt toed shoe.
In Witness whereof, I hereunto name.
GILMORE MANDELL MELLOR.
