This invention relates to fluid discharge" nozzles, andhmore particularly. to a nozzle having an adjustable device arranged to produce a fluid stream which may be varied 111 5 character as desired. Nozzles of this general type are often used to discharge water at high'pressure inthe w'ashingof. automobiles, and it'is desirable that the nozzle deliveri either a concentrated flattened or spread into, a spray. Inthis service, the nozzles, are frequently thrown down .upon concrete floors, and otherwise roughly handled, and to be successfulthey must be capable of withstanding such treatment without damage. It is also desirable that the. adjusting'mechanism be simple to operate while the nozzle. is in use and so constructed as to remain in any given adjusted position until intentionally moved by the operator. It is a further object of my invention to provide a spray nozzle whichmaybe adjusted'by the operator .without releasmg his grip upon the nozzle. 7
With "these and other objects-in view, as 40 willbe apparent to-those skilled in the art, my invention resides in the combination of parts setforth in the specification and covered by the claims appended hereto.
In accordance with my inventiorn'I' produce a concentrated'li'quid jet by any suitable means such as a circular orifice in a thin plate mounted at one end of a cylindricalpipe. In order to change this jet to a spraywhen desired, I provide a deflector which .is mounted near the orifice and spaced theresubstantially cylindrical jet or one which is to-the sleeve.

In order to communicate the longitudinal movement of the adjusting member to the deflecting' ba'r, I preferably so arrange these parts that the adjusting member contacts directly tvith the bar. This is preferably accom'plished by providing a proj'ection shown in the form of a-cylindrical sleeve 25, inte- Jgral With adjusting member 18 and extending inside the inner sleeve 15.
