Since the type of car chosen for illustrating the invention is of thewell-known flatbottom gondola type only porti'onsof it have been shown audit is to be understood that the construction illustrated is duplicated on the opposite side of the car. 7
Referring'more particularly to the drawings l indicates 'oneoftheside members of the car center sill and'2 the usual top cover plate thereof. The car floor 3, is preferably of sheetmetal and is spaced above the center sill. At the, opposite sides ofthe car the floor may be secured by rivets 4 to the lower; inwardly projecting flanges 5 of the channel shaped side sills The car sides -may be convenientlyformed of metaliplates or sheets 7 which are overlappingly secured to the outer face of the side sill in any suitable manner (not shown).

illustrated in the drawings, through which the lading of the car may be discharged and each of the openings is provided with a hingedly mounted closure 10. In order to permit the car to be quickly emptied of its contents it is the usual practice to make these discharge openings in cars of the type illustrated relatively large. In view of this fact correspondingly largeclosures must be employed for each of the openings which due to their weight require consider"- able effort on the part of trainmen to raise them to closed position. Especially is this true when cast doors are employed. In order to obviate this difliculty each of the closures is preferably made in two sections 11 and 12, the sectionsbeingso arranged and related that they in effect act as one door when in operative position but may be elevated or raised to closed position separately or independently. Each of the sections is preferably made of cast steel and is provided with downwardly projecting marginal flanges 13; The marginal flanges at the two side edges of each section and that one adjacent the hinged or inner edge terminate in inwardly projecting flanges 14. while the marginal flanges adjacent the outer or free edge of'the door terminates inan outwardly projecting flange 8. Thus the side and inner edges of the sections are in effect channeled shaped while the outer edges thereof are Z-shaped.
Rigidly secured to the center sill are a plurality of properly positioned brackets 15 and 16 for hingedly connecting the closure to the car. Each of the brackets is formed with a base-plate 17 and with upwardly projecting side flanges 18, the base-plate being suitably apertured to receive rivets 19 em ployed for connecting the brackets to the center sill. Extending inwardly from each of the side flanges are hub portions 26 which are spaced apart a suitable distance to respectively receive the lugs 21 with which e closure sections are formed. Each of the brackets may be advantageously fashioned with a web 22 for respectively connecting the hub portions 20, the end flanges 18 and the base-plate 17. The lugs 21 are each formed with a hub portion 23 connected to the sections by a web 24 and side flanges 2 5, the outer side flanges of each of the hinge lugs constituting, in effect, continuations or prolongations of the marginal side flanges of the closure sections. The hub portions of the brackets and 23 of the lugsare aperturedto'receive' a pin 26 of any suitable construction for hingedly mounting the sections. As it is desirable to arrange the adjacent inner edges of the sections of each closure in close proximity the hub portionsofthe hinge bracket 16 are spaced a sufficient distance apart to receive the inner hinge lugs of adjacent sections.
To prevent the escape of line lading between the adjoining edges of the sections a portion of one of them overlaps the adjacent portion of the other. In the drawings the main body portion of the door 11 projects outwardly in the form of a flange 27 beyond the inner side marginal flange thereof and the portion of the door 12 adjacent its inner edge is recessed as at 28 to receive the flange 27. In this manner the top surfaces of each of the door sections are disposed in substantially the same plane. Thus it will be seen that since the adjoining edges of the door are in overlapping relation and that the portions of the floor and side sill defining the lading discharge opening overlie adj'acent'portions of the closure the lading within the car is effectually prevented from accidentally escaping therefrom.
The outer face of each door section may be advantageously integrally formed with diagonal reinforcing flanges or ribs 29 which converge from adjacent its hinged edge andintersect at a point adjacent its opposite' edge. It is preferred to arrange the inner side flange of each of the hinge lugs 21 of the sections and the inner ends of the diagonal flanges so that they constitute continuations or prolongations of each other. To rigidify the diagonal flanges at their points of intersection they may be tied together by a horizontally disposed web 30.
Projecting outwardly beyond the free edge of each section from the pointof intersection of its diagonal flanges is a member 31 which serves the dual function of a reinforcing member and an arm for cooperating with mechanism carried by the car to support the section in closed or operative positions. Thus it will be seen that each door section is reinforced by members ar-' ranged in substantially the form of a Y, the flanges 29 constituting the legs thereof and the member 31 the stem. Each of the members 31 comprises a web or flange 32 arranged substantially normal to the main body portion of the section and depends below the outer face of the door a greater distance than the diagonal and marginal flanges thereof. The lower edge of the member 31 is provided with a horizontal flange 33 which extends continuously from the diagonal-fianges to the outer end of the member and the upper edge of that portion of the member between its outer end and the outer marginal flange of the section is likewise fashioned with a horizontal flange 34 disposed substantially in the plane of the main body portion of the section. When it .is desired to cause the sections to open simultaneously the supporting hook of section 11 is first moved to inoperative position but this will not enable that section to move to open position since its flange 27 is in overlapping engagement with the top of the section 12 which isstill maintained in close position by its associated hook. When this last-named hook'is moved to an inoperative position both of the sections will simultaneously move to open position. In the door olosingoperationit willofcourse be appre ciated that it is alwayswnecessary to'move the section'll to closed position before the section 12.
From the foregoing it will be evident that the closure although made in two sections functions when in closed position as a unitary door and .thatvthe sections are con structed and rigidified in .a manner such that they-will effectually withstand the severe service conditions to which theyv are subjected. In a railway car having a lading discharge opening, a hinged closure for said opening, said closure being integrally formed with reinforcing flanges. which converge from adjacent the hinged edgeof the closure and intersect at a pointadjacent the opposite edge thereof, said closure be ing also integrally formed. with a member extending from adjacent the point of intersection of said reinforcing flanges to a point beyond an" edge of the closure, and means,
for cooperating with'said last-named memposition.

In a railway car having a lading discharge opening, a closure for said opening, said closure being provided with lugs for hingedly connecting. the closure to the car, andbeing also integrally provided with diagonal flanges extending from the hinge lugs and intersecting adjacent the edge of the closure opposite the hinged edge thereof.

In a railway car having a lading discharge'opening, a closure for said opening, said closure being integrally formed with a plurality of diagonal reinforcing flanges and with a reinforcing member projecting outwardly beyond an edge of the closure, said reinforcing member having a flange adapted to cooperate with means to support the closure in operative position.
5. In a railwaycar having a lading discharge opening, a closure for said opening, said closure beingintegrally provided with diagonally arranged reinforcing flanges and with an angularly shaped member projecting outwardly beyond an edge of the clo sure, said member having a flange disposed substantially in the plane of the main body portion of the closure adapted to cooperate with means for supporting the, door in closed position.

In a railway car having a lading discharge opening, a closure for said opening, said closure having outwardly projecting marginal flanges and integrally provided with a plurality of reinforcing members one of which is disposed on opposite sides of one of said marginal flanges and the outer end thereof being adapted to serve as means for cooperating with a hook to maintain the closure in operative position.
7. In a railway car having a lading discharge opening, a hingedly mounted closure for said opening, said closure having outwardly projecting marginal flanges and integral reinforcements arranged substantially in the form of a Y, the legs of the Y extending from the marginal flange at the hinged edge of the closure and intersecting adjacent the marginal flange at the opposite edge thereof.

In a railway'car having alading discharge opening, a hingedly mounted closure for said opening having outwardly projecting marginal flanges, said closure being inte rally formed with diagonally arranged rein orcing flanges extending from the marginal flange at the hinge edge of the closure and intersecting inwardly of the marginal flange at the opposite edge thereof, said closure being also integrally formed with an angularlyshaped reinforcing member extending from the point of intersection of the diagonal'flanges to a point outof the last-named marginal flange. a railway car having a lading discharge opening, a closure for said opening, said closure being integrally formed with reinforcing members arranged in the form of a Y, and means rigid with the stem of the Y for cooperating with mechanism to support the closure in operative position.
10. In a railway car having a lading discharge opening, a hingedly mounted closure for said opening, said closure being integrally formed with a plurality of angularly disposed reinforcing members respectively intersecting at a point adjacent the free edge of .the closure, one of said reinforcing members being adapted to cooperate with means for maintaining the closure in operative position.
11. In a'railway car having a lading discharge opening, a hingedly mounted closure for said opening, said closure being integrally formed on its outer face with a socket for accommodating a removable lever whereby the closure may be moved to operative position.
12. In a railway car having a lading discharge opening, a hingedly mounted closure for said opening, said closure being integrally, formed with a member projecting beyond an edge thereof adapted to cooperate with means for supporting the closure in operative position, said closure being also integrally formed with a socket adjacent the said member and inwardly of the free edge of the closure for receiving a removable lever whereby the latter may be moved to operative position.
13. In a railway car having a lading discharge opening, a closure for said opening, said closure involving a plurality of independently movable sections, each of the sections being integrally formed with a member projecting outwardly beyond an edge thereof, and a plurality of means for respectively cooperating with said outwardly projecting members for sustaining said sections in operative positions.
14. In a railway car having a lading discharge opening, a closure for said opening, said closure involving a plurality of independently movable sections, each of said sections being integrally formed with diagonally arranged reinforcing members and with an angularly shaped reinforcing member projecting beyond an edge thereof, and means for respectively cooperating with the outwardly projecting ends of said angularly shaped reinforcing members for sustaining the sections in operative positions.
15. A hinged door for a railway car integrally formed with diagonally arranged flanges intersecting inwardly of the free edge thereof, said door being also integrally formed with an angularly shaped member extending from the intersection of, said diagonal flanges to a point outwardly of the said free edge of the door.
16. In a railway car havingia lading dis charge opening, a hingedclosure for said opening, said closure comprising a plurality of independently movable sections, and means rigidly secured to the carbody'adjacent the outer side edges of the sections for preventing movement of said sections away from each other along theirhinge axes.
17. In a railway car having a lading dism charge opening, a closure for said openingprovided with hinge lugs along-one of its edges, rigidifying members for said closure arranged in substantially Y formatiom'the members'constituting the legs of the Y respectively converging from; adjacent the hinge lugs, and means rigid with the stem of the Y for cooperatingwith mechanism carried by the car to support the closure in operative position.
18. In a railway car having a lading discharge opening, a closure for said opening integrallyiormed with hinge lugs adjacent one of its edges, rigidifying members formed integrallywith saidfclosure and arranged in substantiallyY formation, the members constituting the legs of the! respectively converging fron adjacent the hinge lugs and intersecting adjacent the opposite edge of the closure, and means rigid with the stem: of said Y forcooperatmg with mechanism, carried by the car for supporting the clos ure in operative position.
19. In a railway car having a lading dis' charge openlng, a closure for said opening provided with hinge lugs ad acent its inner corners, rigidifying members for said closure arrangedinsubstantially Y formation,
the members constituting the legs of the Y respectively converging from the hinge lugs and intersecting adjacent the opposite edge of the closure, and means rigid with the stem of the Y for cooperating with mechanism carried by the car body to support the closure in operative position.
