As may be seen from the drawings the portion of the flange adjacent the ridge of the roof is disposed in a substantially horizontal plane and is spaced a greater distance below the roof sheets than the portions of the fla-nge adjacent the ends of the member which are disposed in a plane substantiall parallel with that of the roof sheets. ll`o rigidly connect the members to the side plates brackets 16 may be employed respectively having a portion 20 secured by the rivets 8 to the side plates and having a portion 21 interposed between adjacent portions of the roof sheets and flanges 15 of the members for attachment to the latter by rivets 22. v
`Extending longitudinally of the car on opposite sides of the members 13 are a plurality of beams 23. Each of these beams is preferably of channel shape having a web portion 24 and downwardly extending legs 25 terminating in oppositely disposed laterally projecting flanges 26. Each of the beams is so proportioned that its flanges 26 may be secured by rivets 27 in overlapping relation to the flanges 15 of adjacent members 13 while its web `24 is arranged in supporting engagement with the underside of the roof sheet intervening between the members to which it is secured. The beams adjacent the ends ofthe car are connected to the end plates by angle shaped brackets 28, each of which is formed'with a flange 29 for attachment by rivets 30 to the adjoining end plate and a flange 31 for attachment by rivets 32 to the lateral flanges 26 of the associated beam.
Each of the beams is provided with one or more transversely extending members 33. These members are each formed with a substantially horizontal plate portion 34 and downwardly extending marginal flanges 35, the plate portion being rigidly secured by rivets 36 to the flanges 26 of the associated beam. The plate portion of each of the mem# bers'33 is spaced a sufficient distance from the web 24 of its associated beam to permit a rope, chain, nose of a hook, or any other suitable'means capable of supporting a. load lifting device to be inserted in the space or opening defined by the web 24 and plateportion 34. It will be rperceived that by securing the members 33 to the beams in the manner disclosed'they form therewith structures of box-like section whereby the beams are greatly rigidified so as to more 4efficiently withstand the forces imparted to them from the load lifting devices. n
The vforegoing construction results not only f in simple and rugged means for cooperating with load lifting devices but the longitudinally extending beams 23 are associated with brace the roof and to support the roof sheets.
I claim:
1. A roof for railway cars involving a plurality of roof sheets having marginal flanges along their side edges, carlines respectively secured to adjacent flanges of neighboring roof sheets, members extending transversely of the car and respectively secured to said carlines, each of said members having a laterally projecting flange spaced vbeneath said roof sheets, a `channel shaped `beam extendingy longitudinally of the car between said members and rigidly secured to the flanges of said members, and lmeans rigidly secured to said beam and forming therewith a. structure of box-like section, said means being adapted to serve` as a support fora load lifting device. f
2. A roof for railway cars involving a plurality of roof sheets having upstanding marginal flanges alongtheir side edges, carlines respectively embracing and rigidly secured to adjacent flanges of neighboring roof sheets, a transversely extending member rigidly secured to yeach carline and the flanges of the roof sheets associated with the latter, each of said members having a laterally extending flange disposed in spaced relation to the underside of the roof sheets, a channel shaped beam extending longitudinally of the car between'said ymembers and resting upon the flanges ofthe latter, andmeans rigidly secured to'said beam and forming therewith a structure of box-like section, said means being adapted to serve as a support for a load lifting device.
3. A roof for railway cars involving roof sheets having upstanding side marginal flanges, T-shaped lmembers respectively interposed between adjacent flanges of neighboring roof sheets, the flange of each T- shaped member being spaced below said roof sheets, U-shaped carlines respectivel embracing the adjacent flanges'of neigh yring roof sheets and rigidly secured to the latter and to said members, a channel shaped beam. extending longitudinally of the car between said membersrand rigidly securedk in overlapping relation to the flan es of the latter, andmeans rigid with said eamadapted to serve -as a support for a load lifting device, said meansextending transversely of the beaml and forming therewith a-structure of box-likeV section.v f
4. A roof for'railway cars involving a plu rality of roof sheets having upturned side marginal flanges, carlines respectively secured to Vadjacentfflanges of neighboring roof sheets, members respectively interposed between adjacent flanges of neighboring roof sheets'and extending transversely of the car, and a beam member extendin longitudinally ofthe car between saidmem ers in supporting engagement with the underside of adja cent roof sheets, said beam being of channel lapping adjoining portions of the roof sheets,v

6. A roof for railway cars comprising a plurality of carlines, transverselyextending menibersrigidly secured to and depending below said carlines7 each of said ,members being` provided. with a :laterally extending flange, and a channelshaped beam extending longitudinally of the car between said members, said beam being provided with oppositely disposed laterally extending flanges respectively secured in overlapping relation to the flanges f said members, and means extendingtransversely of said beam and rigidly secured to the flanges thereof, said means forming with the beam a structure of .box-V marginal flanges along their side edges, carlines respectively embracing and rigidly secured toadjacent flanges of neighboring roof sheets, members extending transverselyy of 1 the car and respectively secured to said cai'- lines, a channel shaped beam member extending longitudinallyy of the car betweensaid members, said beam being rigidly se-v cured to the latter and having-a web portion in supporting engagement withy the underside of anadjoining roof sheet,uand means extending transversely of said beamand rigprojecting flange disposed in spaced relation vto the underside of the roof sheets, a channel shaped beam extending longitudinally of the car between said members, said beam having a web portion in supporting engagement with an adjacent roof sheet and having oppositely disposed laterally projecting flanges rigidly secured to the flanges of said membei's, andy means extending transversely of the beam and rigidly secured to the lateral anges thereof, said means forming with the beam a structure of box-like section and being adapted to serve as a support yfor aload lifting device.
9. A roof for railway cars involving a plurality of carlines, T-shaped members extending downwardly from said carlines, the stem of each of said T-shaped members being rigidly secured to the adjacent carline and the flange of each of said members bein@ disposed below lthe carlines, and a plurality of beams extending longitudinally of the car in alinement-with each other, each of saidl beams being of channel shape and extending continuously between neighboring members, said beams being rigidly secured to the flanges of said members and provided with transversely extending means adapted to serve as a supportfor a load lifting device, each of said means forming with the associated beam a structure of box-like section.
