IMPROVEMENT lN APPARATUS FOR APPLYING TOOLS TO BE GROUND 0R POLISHED.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 180.97 I, dated August 8, 1876; application tiled May 4, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CHARLES WALKER and HENRY B. NORTHUP, of the village of Sandy Hill, Washington county, New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Adjustable Devices for Grinding and Sharpening Plane-Irons, Chisels, and other Bevel- Edge Tools used by carpenters and workers in wood; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction of the same, and of the operation thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

In the accompanying drawing,A represents a bar of wood, less than two feet in length, and of proportionate size, supporting rests l 1 on the upper surface, in combination with rests 5 5 underneath, for supporting the handles of draw-knives, while such knife is moved freely toright and left during the grinding of the same. The drawing also represents such with aperture 3, for holding by means rfthumbscrew 4: any bevel-edge tool to the desired ailgle on the grindstone while grinding the same. B represents a plane or chisel, held in aperture3 by thumb-screw 4: while such iron or chisel is being brought into contact with the grindstone while the tool is being ground. I) D represent arms connecting wood bar A with metallic catch E and with metallic ratchet F, which ratchetis affixed to and supported by a post, wall, or ceiling. E represents a metallic catch, fitted centrally with its drop to the teeth in ratchet F, so that said tool-holder will be easily and readily balanced to the right and left while any of said tools are being ground. F represents a straight metallic ratchet-plate, not more than two feet long,

with teeth from a to b, into which catch E drops and moves backward and forward on F easily, and laterally freely to the right or left while the tool is being ground. The number of teeth in F should not exceed four in an inch, and should be of proportionate depth and thickness.

(latch E unites arms D D where it comes in contact therewith, and is fastened to them by screws and other suitable means. It is made usually of band-iron, about six inches long and about one and three fourths inch in width, and in thickness about one-eighth of an inch. The arm G is provided with a metallic strap, h, which serves as a slotted guide for the curved arm H, whereby the bar F may be adjusted to different angles. The length of arms D D from their contact with bar A to catch E, acting with any desired ratchet-tooth in F, will depend on the distance of the center of the grindstone from E to F, and also from the length of the semi-diameter of the grindstone from its center to that point in the surface thereof where the tool is brought in contact therewith While being ground. The arms D D will usually be made of seasoned wood, about one and one-eighth inch square and from five feet to eight feet in length.

We claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The adjustable tool-holder consisting of adjustable pivoted toothed bar F, catch E, arms I) D, and bar A, provided with suitable means for supporting the tool to be ground, as and for the purpose set forth.
