CABG-ILL, or M'AnIsoN, wiscoNsIN, yAssIsNon 'ro FRENCH BATTERY coM- l PANY, or iviAnIsoN, wisojoNsIN, A coIiroieAfrIoN or wIscoNsIN FLASH LIGHT Application filed October 1, 1930. Serial No. 485,765.
This invention relates particularly to flashlights of the type which permit the lamp to be turned at an angle to the axis of the Y casing, when desired. n
'5 The primary object is to provide a thoroughly practicable flashlight of the character indicated which is of staunch and durable character, and which serves effectively as an ordinary flashlight, but which, by a simple manipulation, may be changed to enable the axis of the lamp to be set at an angle to the axis of the main casing. l
The invention is illustrated in a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings,
` in which- Fig. 1 is a broken vertical sectional View of a flashlight embodying the invention Fig. 2, a transverse section taken. as indicated at line 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, a detail elevational view of the support which carries the tiltably mounted head employed.l
In the illustration ofthe invention given in the drawing, A designates fa main casingsectionv equipped with an extension-,section A B, a lamp-carrying headmounted ony a bracket B `which is pivotally supported on a short standard B2 carried yby a'support B3 detachably connected, with the upper end ofthe main casing-section A; and @,a'batcomprising a dry cell, vor dry cells, housed within the main casing-section.
' The casing-section A is shown equipped at its lower end with a removable cap l within which is located a spring 2 which forms electrical connection between the Zinc bottom of the lowermost cell and the casing. p
The upper end of the casing-section A is provided, as indicated vat 3, withl a corrugated thread-portion.
.The casing-extension A bular member having its upper. end abutting against the lamp-carrying member B, and having its lower end lprovided with a corrugated thread-poi'tion 4 which engages the '45 thread 3. The casing-extensionA may be screwed downwardly until the thread-portion 4 becomes disengaged from the threadportion?) of the main section, and the extension A may then be slid downwardly into telescoped position to enable the head B to ber. comprising a comprises n a tube turned at an angle to the axis of the flashlight casing.
The lamp-supporting head B is shown as consisting of a cupped havingvits bottom provide-d with a central opening equipped with an insulation ring 5 in which is supported a metal lamp socket 6.
sheet-metal member i The outer open end of the cupped inember' B preferably is provided with acorru- 1;
gated thread-portion 7, upon which is adjustably mounted a focusing sleeve 8 which carries a reflector 9 and a glass-disk, or lens 10. rl`he bottom of the reflector 9 is provided with a perforation 9a through which the lamp bulb 11 mounted in the socket 6 protrudes into the reliector. Focusing, where this feature is desired, may be accomplished by the means disclosed.
The lamp socket 6 is provided with a de- 3 pending extension 6a in the lower end o which is fitted an insulation disk l2 through which extends a contact 13 with which is connected a conductor 14.
The bracket B is shown as a furcated memhead portion 15 which conforms to the kpart-spherical bottom of the member B and is secured thereto, asby means of rivets 16. Y y i V The bracket B2 comprises a sheet-metal `strip bent into suitableform and secured to the member `B3V as by means of rivets '17. Furcations of the member B embrace the standard portion of the member B2, and the serves as a pivot. The connection preferably is sufficiently tight tol .develop a suitable amount 'of friction so thatthe head B will remain at any desired angle at whichit may be set.
The support B3 lis shown as comprising a sheet-metal disk 19 having a flange 19B which is corrugated to form a thread which engages the thread-portion 3 of the main casing-section; and an insulation disk 20 secured to the disk 19, the disk 19 being provided with a central opening which is covered by the insulation disk 20. Through the insulation wire 14.
parts are firmly connected by a rivet 18 which p disk 2O extends a central contact 21 which is electrically .connected with the The battery C is shown as comprising two dry cells 22 having central contacts or electrodes 22a, the central electrode of the upper cell making contact with the central contact 21, and thus being electrically connected, through the medium of the wire 1li and the contact 13, with the central contact 23 of the lamp.
The metal socket 6 makes contact with the outer terminal of the lamp. This socket is electrically connected at 24 with an insulated wire 25 which extends through an insulation ferrule 26 with which the disk 19 is equipped.
The lower or inner end of the conductor 25 affords a contact 25@ which makes contact with the upper end of a conductor 27 (suitably insulated) which is connected with the casing, the conductor 27 leading to the switch 28 which is equipped with a sliding switch member 29 electrically connected to the casing and adapted to close the circuit at the point 30.
Preferably, the member B3 is equipped with a pivotally mounted foot, or support, 31, which normally is housed within the casingscction A.
The member 31 is shown as consisting of a wire bent into suitable shape to provide feet 31" and pivotsportions 31h, the pivot-portions extending through pivot-members 32 and riveted thereat, these connections preferably being sufficiently tight to hold the member 31 in any desired position of adjustment.
After the sleeve A has been completely telescoped on the main kcasing-section A, the support 31 may be swung in one direction to provide a protruding foot or support, and the 1amphead B may be swung in the opposite direction. Thus, for example, the pivot support 31 may support the flashlight on its side, while the lamp is directed laterally with relation to the flashlight body. That is, the flashlight body may rest on its side with one end supported on the member 31, while the lamp is directed upwardly.
When the flashlight is in use as an ordinary flashlight, the casing-'extension A is in the position shown in Fig. 1, in which it firmly supports the lamp-head B and houses the internal' connections. In this condition, the flashlight has much the appearance of an ordinary flashlight, perhaps of special construction. On the other hand, the sleeve A may be caused to telescope fully with the upper portion of the main-casing section A of the flashlight casing, thus permitting the lamp to be. turned at an angle to the body of the flashlight and supported as explained above.
The pivotal support 18 of the lamp-head B is eccentrically located, as shown in Fig. 1. That is, the pivot is shown located near one side of the casing, and this is the preferred arrangement.
While the invention is shown applied to a flashlight in which one terminal of the lamp is grounded on the casing, it is obvious that any other desired arrangement may be used; and, if desired, a non-metallic casing may be employed, in which event suitable circuit connections may be provided in a manner well understood in the art.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only and no unnecessary limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.
