ELECTRIC TERMINAL GONNECTER Original Filed l' eb. 2'7, 1923 51:1 v ATTORNEY name 111111 19, 1931' UNITED: STATES PA N OFF-ICE 4' onaams n. nocvnn, or mc'asraa, rmmsnvnmn ELECTRICAL connnc'rna Original application nlcdlcbmary 21, 1928, Serial 251,354 invoice and an application filed June as I 929. Serial n. 374,355. j
My invention relates to the art of electrical connectors and it particularly has for its object to provide certain modifications and improvements on the terminal-post connectors that constitute the subject matter of .my aspplication for patent filed October 4, 1927,
I rial No. 223,917, and the present application is in particular a division of my application filed February 27 1928, Serial No. 257,354.
The present invention has for its object to provide-a terminal-post-cable connector of the eneral type disclosed in my aforesaid apphcations with improved clamping faces so designated and constructed as to adapt the connector to take terminal posts either of the straight cylindrical typeor of the taperedfrusto-conical type and to take such posts of various diameters and maintain a surface contact between the terminal post and the clamp of the cable connector. Other objects will in part be obvious and in part bepointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, the invention resides in those novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts,-all of which will be first fully described in the following detailed 1 description, then be particularly pointed out 7 tween a pair of spacing lugs 14a: to receive in the appended claims, reference being had so Figure 1 is a perspective view of the inven tion in use. A
Figure 2 is a plan view of the. invention.
Figure?) is an inverted plan -view of thesame. I
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the principal element 0' the connector showing the bendable plate in the open position.
Figure 5 is an elevation of the parts shown in Figure 4 with the flat cable in place before bending down thebendable plate, v
. of t e pins may be flattened or riveted over iace 13v opposin the face 5 of the o to the accompanyingdrawings, in which 2- tion by a bolt 16 whose vhead 17 rated as at 5 and in the embodiment of the invention illustrated it is provided with a relatively rigid flat plate or shank'6' which extends in a direction at an obtuse-angle to w the plane of the jaws face2.
.The shank or plate 7 s provided at its exits inner face it is provided with teeth 8. The teeth 8 are adapted to ass through apertures in the fiat battery ca 1e 20 hereinafter again referred to and project into the slots 10.
The plate 9 has its slots 10 referably chamfered as at 11'so that when t e plate 9 is chamfered down onto thecable 20 with e the )ins 8 projected into the slots 10 the ends.
and thus lock the plate 9 in place as well as securing the cable '20 in a rigid and electrically good way. 4 V a The removable jaw 12 is rovided with. a bolt hole 23 similar to the olt hole 4 and it is also provided with a serrated gripping t er aw;
- The jaw 12- as a recess 14 formed be loosely the In 3 when the arts are assembled.
The remova le jaw 12' as a flat face 15 opposing the face 2 of the jaw. 1. 1 r The jaws are held in their gripping posi- 'es against the shoulder 19 formed by the shank 6 and." the jaw 1 and is thereby prevented from turmng, while a nut 18 servesto draw the jaws together, in cooperation with the bolt 17 A fiat cable 20 is ada ted to have the con-' nector secured to it, as foreintimated, and 21 desi' ates the battery having the usual termina post 22, the t ingthat is to be gripped by the jaws 5 and 13 constituting my lIIVGIltlOIL As will be observed from the drawin s, especially Figures 7 and 8, from. which t e v serrations have been omitted for urposes of clear illustration, the gripping aces of the members '1 and .12 are curved on two centers toprovide large or plus'terminal gripping 1 7 connection with t surfaces 24, and small or minus terminal gripping surfaces to adapt the single gripping head for efliciently clamping on either terminal.
It will be observed that by reason of the fact that the lugs 14m and 3 have a loose engagement with one another and in viewof the fact that the bolt 16 passes loosely throughthe bolt holes 4, the jaw 12 has a limited amount of universal movement, that is to say, it may rock on the lugs 14a: to open and close the aws, it may rock sidewise to adapt the jaws to straight or tapering posts, and it may swivel on an axis parallel to the bolt 16 to line up the corrugations of the jaws into parallehsm, and it may move backwardly and forwardly to shift the centers of curvature of the jaws to accommodate irregular posts or to allow for irregularities in the casting of the jaws. My construction enables the'jaws to be die cast and assembled without any machine work being done on the same, thereby cutting down the manufacturing costs considerably.
. While in this application I have shown and described a particular means of connecting the cable device to the cable 20 I make no claim thereto in this application as that constitutes the subject matter of my ori 'nal ap lication, Serial No. 257,354 aforesai rom the foregoing description, taken in e accompanying drawings, it is thought the complete construction, operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
What I claim is:
1. A cable-to-post connector com rising a sleeve for attachment to the end 0 a cable, a clamp 'aw fixed thereto, a separable jaw associated with said fixed jaw, said jaws having opposing post-gripping faces curved on a plurality of centers to adapt said faces to terminalposts of diflt'erent diameters, said jaws having inter-engaging bearing means at the end remote from said gripping faces, and a bolt with nut passingloosely through apertures in said jaws at a place for securing the. same together between the endsv of sa1d jaws, said inter-en aging bearing means comprising a male-and emale bearing having a rocking and sliding adjustable movement whereb said separable jaw may slide longitudinal y on sa1d fixed jaw, and may rock laterally and longitudinally to accommodate itself to battery posts of varying diameters and shapes, substantially as and r the purposes described.
2. A cable-to-post connector comprising a sleeve for attachment to the end of a cable, a clamp (jaw fixed thereto, a separable jaw associate with said, fixed jaw said jaws having opposing post-grippin faces curved on a plurality of centers to a apt .said faces to terminal posts of different diameters, said vwhereby said separa le jaw may slide longitudinally on said fixed jaw, and may rock laterally and longitudinally to accommodate itself to battery posts'ofvarying diameters and shapes, said gripping faces being corru- 2 gated in the direction of the axis of the jaws,
substantially as and for the purposes described.
