SAWING MACHINE Patented Aug.8, 1876.

W ITJV' ESSES @V @2M 9136 N- PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, o c.
PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER MOOREIGHT, OF TRANQUILITY, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I 80,902, dated August 8, 1876; application filed June 20, 1876.
' drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and use of a saw-frame, to which is connected a spring, a lever, and a saw, in
such a manner that the saw may be operated in one direction by the Weight of the operator, and in the other by the spring, as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a partial longitudinal section.
In the figures, A represents a triangular frame, of suitable dimensions, which has its two parts connected at rear by means of the round b. The two front ends of the bars of the frame are held at asuitable distance apart, and firmly secured in this position by means of the front end of the spring, which is bolted to them, as seen at c c. A short slot is made in the end of the spring to form, in connection with the forward ends of the frame, a guide for the saw.' The spring passes backward at an angle to the frame, and is provided with a seat on its rear end. D represents a lever, made broad at its center, and which passes through a slot in the spring B. This lever is pivoted to the rear end of the saw E, and has a cross-bar handle at its upper end. The lever is held erect by means of a metal rod or how, F, which passes through, and then has its ends secured in the frame A. The bow passes through the fiat portion of the lever at its rear, while the front portion of the flat part has a pivot passing through it and the springs to confine them together.
It will readily be seen that when the saw is placed upon a log, and an operator takes a position upon the seat of the spring, the saw will be drawn backward by his weight, and then carried forward by the spring as soon as it is relieved of his weight. The movement is easily effected by placing the feet upon the frame and the hands upon the handle G.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The frame A, the spring B, the lever D, and bow F, constructed and arranged substantially as set forth, in combination with a saw for cutting wood in the manner described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of May, 1876.
ALEXANDER MGCREIGHT.
