My present invention has for its object to provide a simple, durable and highly efficient wiper for the slug trimming knives at the sides of the type slug channel of a type casting machine.
As is well known type slugs as they are successively cast vary slightly in thickness and the sides thereof are not always parallelso that they have a slight longitudinal 1O taper. To true up these type slugs as they are ejected from the mold into the type slug channel in the vise of'a type casting machine they are forced between a pair of trimming knives at the sides of said channel that shaves a type slug to a predetermined thickness. This shaving of type slugs leaves shavings on the trimming knives which often extend into or across the slug channel so that when the next fol- I lowin t e slu is in'ected into the slu D 2: J 5
channel and between the knives thereof a shaving often adheres to the ,type face of a slug and is sort of welded thereto, thereby making an imperfect type face which 2 will leave a blur in the printing for the character on which the shaving is deposited. My improved wiper blade is arranged to move in the arc of a circle in the plane of the edges of the trimming knives and ;.3 to pass over the trimming knives with a combined wiping and shearing action and with a constant and equal pressure on said knives throughout the entire stroke of the wiper blade. Said wiper blade when at rest 3 is entirely out of the way and the arrangement thereof is such that it is encased by the surrounding parts of the type casting machine and thus protected from squirting type metal during casting of type slugs in the mold.
The pressure at which the wiper blade rests on the knives may be varied, at will, as well as the operative stroke thereof for timed relation with the parts of the type casting machine with which it is associated.

To the above end, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.

As is well known, the vise 8 is mounted for vertical swinging movement to and from an operative position and that there are a plurality of molds 6'that are successively brought into registration with the slug channel 9. Referring now in detail to the improved 1 wiper, the same includes a flat Wiper blade 13, of spring brass or other suitable material, pivoted at 14 to an oscillatory head 15, which, in turn, is pivoted at 16 to a bracket 17 that is rigidly secured-by screws to the knife block 11. This wiper blade 13 is normally held against movement on its pivot 14 for common oscillatory movement with the head by a set-screw 18 which extends through a notch 19 in the lower 2 edgeof said blade andhas screw-threaded engagement with the'head 15.
The head of the set-screw 18 impinges against the outer face of'the wiper blade '13 withsulficient friction to hold the same Said wiper blade 13 is normally and yieldingly held by "a coiled spring 20 in a raised position in which it is atone side of the slug channel 9 with its free end thereabove, see Fig. 2. This spring 20 encircles an internal hub 21 on the hea d 15 and one of itsends is anchored to the bracket 17 and its otherend is attached to said head. Upper and lower stop surfaces 22 on the head 15 limit the lifting movement -of the wiper blade 13 by the spring 20 and the downward or'operative movement thereof by certain connections,
as will hereinafter appear.
It is important to note that the wiper 40 blade 13 is'mounted'to oscillate in the arc 'of'a circle and in the plane of the cutting edges of the trimming knives 10 for fiat contact therewith under the same pressure throughout the entire length of said'knives. By referenoeto Fig. 2 it will be noted that the wiper blade 13 is pivoted materially to one side of the slug channel 9 so that said wiper blade moves over the trimming knives 10 witha combined wiping and shearing action thus causing a relatively long portion of the wiper blade 13 to contact with said knives. This movement of the wiper blade 13 over the knives 10 distributes the wear thereon over a relatively long surface so that said blade always remains smooth under wear. The pressure with which thewiper blade 13 contacts with the knives 10 may be varied, at will, by springing the free end portion of said wiper-blade either toward or away from the knives 10.
It will-be noted by'reference to Fig. 3 that there is sufficient clearance between the face of the. mold6 and-the knives 10 to permit the wiper blade-13 to freely 'work there- '65 *between.

At the limit of the downward-movement of the wiper blade 13 the trip 27 passes out of engagement with the arm 26 and at which-time the spring 20 returns the wiper blade 13 and its operating connections to normal positions. During the downward or return movementof the elevator 12 the trip'27 engages the finger 26 and'is swung thereby on its hinge to permitsaid trip to pass the arm 26. After thetrip27 passes the arm 26 it is returned by gravity to normal position, see Fig. 4. It will be'noted'that the arm 26 is adjustably held between pair of opposing nuts 29 on the crank 23. By circumferentially adjusting the arm 26 on the crank 23 the timing of the movement of the wiper blade 13 by the elevator 12 may be varied, at will. v
In case a type slug after beinginjected --intothe slug channel 9 by the ejector? is retracted ther'eby into' therp'ath ofmoveme'nt of the wiper blade, said wiper blade when operated will engage said slug with'suflicient pressure tobe'release'dfrom the set-screw 18 with which it frictionally contacts. With the wiper blade 13 released from the setscrew 18 it will turn on its pivot 14 and thereby release the operatin'g'c'onnections for said 'wip'er blade so that they will be 'en gaged by the elevator without 'damage to the wiper blade or actuating connections. -It is, of course, an extremely simple matter to again reset the'wiper blade 13 and secure the same against pivotal'move'ment on the head -15 by. theset-screw -18. ,As the wiper blade 13 moves downward over the knives 10 the shavings removed from the knives by said wiper will be precipitated in advance of the knife and completely removed therefrom.
The link 25, as shown, is in the form of a coiled tensionspring of such strength as to operate the wiper blade 13 under normal conditions but will yield in case said blade sticks during its operative movement to prevent undue strain thereon or on the operating connections therefore.
What I claim is:
1. In a type casting machine the combination with the type slug trimming knives thereof, of a wiper blade mounted for movement over said knives with a combined wiping and shearing action, and connections for intermittently operating the wiping blade from a movable part of the machine.
2. In a type casting machine the combination with the type slug trimming knives thereof, of a wiper blade mounted for oscillatory movement over said knives with a combined wiping and shearing action, and connections for intermittently operating the wiper blade from a movable part of the machine.
3. The structure defined in claim 2 in which the wiper blade is arranged to move in the plane of the surface of the knives with which it contacts and with a constant pressure thereon.
4. The structure defined in claim 2 in further combination with yielding means for returning the wiper blade and connections to normal positions.
5. In a type casting machine the combination with the type slug trimming knives thereof, of a wiper blade pivoted at a laterally offset point from the knives with its free end portion resting thereon with pressure for combined wiping and shearing action and connections for intermittently operating the wiper blade from a movable part of the machine.
6. In a type casting machine the combination with the first elevator and type slug trimming knives thereof, of a wiper blade mounted for movement over the knives, connections including a crank connected to the wiper blade, and a trip on the elevator for actuating the crank during the movement of the elevator in one direction and to be rendered inoperative by said connections during the movement of the elevator in the other direction to permit said connections to return to normal position, and a spring for returning the wiper blade and connections to normal positions.
7. The structure defined in claim 6 in which the trip is returned by gravity to an operative position.
8. The structure defined in claim 1 in which said connections include a yielding member.
9. The structure defined in claim 6 in further combination with a spring connecting the crank to the wiper blade.
10. In a type casting machine the combination with the type slug trimming knives thereof, of a wiper blade mounted for movement over said kniveswith a combined wiping and shearing action, and connections for operating the wiping blade from a movable part of the machine.
11. In a type casting machine the combination with the vise frame, the knife block, the trimming knives, and the first elevator thereof, of a wiper blade mounted on the knife block for movement over the trimming knives with a combined wiping and shearing action, and connections on the vise frame and actuated by the first elevator for operating the wiper blade.
12. In a type casting machine the combination with the vise frame, the knife block, the trimming knives, and the first elevator thereof, of a wiper blade mounted on the knife block for movement over the trimming knives with a combined wiping'and shearing action, a crank mounted on the vise frame and attached to the wiper blade, a trip on the first elevator for operating the crank, and a spring for returning the wiper blade and crank to normal positions.
13. In a type casting machine the combination with the vise frame, the knife block, the trimming knives, and the first elevator thereof, of a wiper blade mounted on the knife block for movement over the trimming knives with a combined wiping and shearing action, a crank mounted on the vise frame, a spring link connecting the crank to the wiper blade, a trip on the first elevator for operating the crank, and a spring for returning the wiper blade and crank to normal positions.
