Description

VALVE GRINDER Filed Nov. 19, 1928 gooooocog Patented June 9, 1931 7 UNITED STATES rarer OFFICE FRED W. MILLER, OF CHICAGO, 1LLIN QIS VALVE GRINDER Application filed November 19, 1$2 8.1.Seria1. No. 320,416.
Valves for internal combustion engines are 10, the'latter being duplicates. The central usually provided with oppositely disposed bit 9 has an upwardly extending portion 11 holes or recesses or with central slots which which is provided with a hole 12 for receiving are adapted to be engaged by suitable grindcotter, pin or fastening member- 13 which ing tools for grinding the same. Such holes holds the bits in the shank. The central bit 9 are spaced differently in different sized valves also has a downwardly extending projection and may be spaced differently in the same 14 for engagement withslots in the valves sized valves of different manufacturers. Adso that it may be used as a screw driver bit justable grinding tools have, therefore, been for valves having such slots. The bit?) also provided for grinding valves, but such tools has a series of evenly spaced holes l 5which 60 have usually been comparatively expensive to are adapted to be engaged by similarly spaced manufacture and not satisfactory in use. projections 16 on the bits 10. The projections The objects of the present invention are to 16 are preferably formed integrally withthe provide an improved tool for grinding valves bits 10, being punched out from the metal I or the like; to provide a valve grinding tool .of thebit plate and are arranged in alignment 1 which will be Very inexpensive to manufacin order to register with the holes 15 in the ture and which will be durable and efficient central or screw driver bit 9, the bits 10 have in use; to provide a valve grinding tool havprojections 17 for engagement with the holes ing a minimum number of parts and having 18 in the valves 19, as shown in Figure 1.
novel adjusting means for adjusting the bits WVhen the bits are assembled with the prowhich engage with the holes; to provide a jections on the adjusting bits in engagement valve grinder having a. screw driver bit and with theholes in the center bit, the. bits are also having adjustable hole engaging bits; inserted in the slot 8 and the cotter pin 13 and to provide such other improvements in placed inposition which holds the bits in the construction and desirable features as will brace. The bits are preferably held someappear more fully from the following dewhat loosely on the pin so that the end bits scription. are free toadjust themselves to the valve In the accompanying drawings illustrating as the grinding operation takes place. The this invention, grinding 1s, of course, performed in the usual 50 Figure 1 is a front view of the tool shown .manner which is familiar to those cognizant .80 in position for grinding a valve with parts with such operations. l/Vhen the tool is to be broken away for convenience in illustration; adjusted for difierently spaced holes in the Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the valve,the bits are removed and the adjustable line 2-2 of Figure 1; ones moved inwardly or outwardly to the Figure 3 is a sectional View taken on the proper size, and the projections brought into line 33 of Figure 1; engagement with dilferent holes in the center Figure 4; is a detail of the central or screw bit, these holes and projections being ardriver bit; and ranged sufiiciently close together to provide Figures 5 and 6 are details of the adjustfor the usual necessary adjustments. ing bits. If the screw driver bit is to be used, the side I 590 Although the tools may be made in any or adjustable bits are turned with their prodesired sizes the drawings are on a somejections 17 extending upwardly so that they what enlarged scale of the size most comare out of the way and will not interfere with monly used. the engagement of the screw driver bit with As shown in these drawings, 7 is the shank the valve.
or shaft of any suitable form of brace which In some instances adjustment of the bits for convenience is shown as being broken might be provided by merely having holes in away. The shank is provided at its lower one member and projections on the other end with a slot 8 for receiving the central member, and other changes or modifications or screw driver bit 9 and the adjusting bits may suggest themselves as coming within the m0 scope of this invention which I do not wish to limit to the exact construction herein shown and described, except as specified in the following claims, in which I claim:
1. A valve grinder comprising a brace having a slot in the shank thereof, a central bit having a series of longitudinally arranged holes therein, means for securing said bit in the slot, and side bits having series of longitudinal projections adapted to engage with said holes, said side bits being held in engagement with the center bit by the sides of the slot.
2. A valve grinder comprising a brace having a slot in the end thereof, a screw driver hit engaging with said slot and projecting beyond the end of the brace, a pin for holding said bit in position in the brace, said bit hav ing a plurality of holes arranged in alignment at right angles to the brace, side bits each having a plurality of longitudinally arranged projections engaging with the holes in the screw driver bit for holding them in adjusted position and also having projections for engagement with holes in the valve to be ground, said side bits fitting closely between the screw driver bit and the sides of the slot;
3. A device as per claim 2 in which the projections on the bits for engagement with the holes are formed by being punched out of a plate forming the bit.
4. A tool for grinding valves comprising a brace having a shouldered slot in the end thereof, a central screw driver bit having a plurality of longitudinally arranged holes, means for securing said bit in the slot, adjusting bits fitting in the slot and engaging with said shoulders and having projections "for engagement with holes in the valve, and projections onthe adj ustingbits which engage with the holes in the screw driver bit for holding the adjusting bits in adjusted position with respect to the screw driver bit, said adjusting bits being adapted to be turned to bring their projections out of engaging position.
