Patented June 2, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE NORMAN H. NYE, OF OUYAHOG'A. FALLS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE VAUGHN MACHINERY COMPANY, OF CUYAHOGA FALLS, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO DISTRIBUTING APPARATUS FOR SPOOLERS ON WIRE DRAWING MACHINES Application filed July 9, 1929. Serial No. 376,968.
The present invention relates to the spooling, and while it is particulary adapted and intended for use as an attachtion may be extended to other fields.
The object of the invention is to design a form of distributing apparatus which is adaptable for use with wire drawing machines which will smoothly and evenly lay the wire on the spool and is capable of being easily adjusted to suit varying lengths of spools. The machine described and illustrated herein is highly eflicient for the purposes described and is particularly adapted for use in connection with high speed wire drawing machines. The invention comprises a self-contained unitary distributing apparatus which is adapted for use with a separate motor which is unconnected with the remainder of the machine. While the invention is set forth in detail, it will be understood that exact conformity therewith is not essential to the successful practicing of the invention and changes and modifications may be made therein within the scope of the invention and the claims.

In the drawings, the wire drawing machine is not shown, as the invention is adaptable for any well known or standard form of machine. The spool is indicated at 10, being mounted at the delivery end of the machine and rotated by any suitable mechanism, the wire being indicated at 11. On .its passage to the spool, the wire is guided by fingers 14 which are mounted on a projection from a reciprocabl e carriage 15,
the guide extending through a slot 16 in the carnage housing 1 The carriage 15 is movable to and fro ment for wire drawing machines, the inven- -'*over guide shafts 20 which are mounted in the housing on opposite sides of a screw threaded shaft 21, which is driven in opposite directions by a reversing motor.
The shaft is in screw threaded engagement with a sleeve 22 located within the housing and held in position by ball bearings 23. A shoe 24 mounted in the housing bears against the outer surface of the sleeve,
being forced into frictional engagement therewith by means of the coil spring 25, the force of which is adjusted by means of the screw threaded cap 26. The spring is adjusted so that during the normal operation of the distributor, the carriage is fed back and forth alon the spool axis, depending upon the direction of rotation of the shaft, but should an obstruction be encountered, or the current be shut oif from the motor forany reason, whereby the parts may continue to rotate without reversal at the proper time, the frictional engagement of the shoe will permit the sleeve to rotate within the housing and thereby prevent breakage of the device.
At one side of the path oftravel of the carriage is located the shiftable, non-rotatable rod 28, the ends of which are carried in sleeves 30, movable axially in bearings in the carriage housing. Projecting from the carriage is a fork 32 which surrounds the lower half of the rod. At its ends the rod is provided with the two screw-threaded portions 33, on which are mounted elongated nuts 34 having gear teeth out in their outer surfaces, these nuts bein path of the fork 32, at eit er end of travel of the carriage. v
The position of the nuts 3% is adjusted along the screw threaded portions, so as to adapt the machine for varying widths of s ools, the machine being thereby adjusta lefor laying the wire against the spool flanges within variations usually found in spools. Each nut is provided with gear teeth on its outer surface which extend the entire length of the nut, and these teeth are located in the 'the two spaced forks 42 formed on an arm 44 which is keyed to a vertical shaft .45, the
latterbeing mounted ina bearing on the lower side of. a switch box 46 received over an opening in the housing. The shaft 45f at its upper end is keyed to an angular lever 48, one arm of which is formed with a V- shaped tail piece 50 in contact with the conical end of a sliding pin 52 mounted in a bearing 54 in the side of the switch box. This pin is forced outwardly by a coil spring 55. As the lever 48 is rocked about its center, the pin 52 will be depressed until its point passes the vertex ofthe tail piece or cam, whereupon the lever is snapped over 'to its other position. This device not only assures a quick movement of the lever, but also moves andmaintams the lever in its proper position at either end of its movement. It will be seen that the shaft 45 with the two levers attached thereto operates as a double lever. v
The other arm 58 of the lever is provided 'with a pin 60 which projects upwardly therefrom and into a slot 62 on a pivoted switch-arm 63 of insulating material. arm has a bushing 65 and is rotatable upon a shaft 64 projecting downwardly from the top of the switch box. The switch arm carries opposite spring contact arms 68 which move over and make electrical contact with the contact buttons '70 on the under side of the cover of the switch box. These contact buttons are electrically connected to the motor, so that the motor is reversed when the switch is thrown from one side, to the other.
The operation of the apparatus will be briefly described. As the spool is rotated to wrap the'wire therearound, the carriage is moved to and fro between the limits of the spool flanges, laying the wire evenly over the whole extent of the spool. The carriage is moved by the rotation of the shaft 21in opposite directions according to the direction of rotation of the motor. At each end of carriage travel, the fork 32 strikes one of the nuts 34, shifting the rod 28 and rocking the lever 48 past the pin 52. As the lever moves to the position where it is snapped over, the pin 60 moves freely in the slot so that no motion is transmitted to the switch arm until thelever is ready to snap over, and owin to the lost motion thus obtained, the switch is movedwith a. snap'and arcing is avoided, the gap in'the The fork 42 permitting this movement. As the switch lever moves from one position to the other, the direction of rotation of the motor and the feed screw is reversed.
What is claimed is:-
1. In an apparatus of the character described, a spool and a distributor including a guide movable to and fro parallel to the spool axis, a screw shaft to move the guide,

4. In a spooling apparatus, a spool, a carriage movable to and fro parallel to the spool axis, a screw shaft, a sleeve in the carriage threaded on the shaft, and a frictional element bearing against the sleeve and normally preventing its rotation thereon.
