GAGE LOCK Filed Oct. 13, 1927 A TTORNEY,
Patented June 2, 1931 UNITED STATES Pariszrrrl oFrlca RALPH S. TYLER AND HERBERT IVICGEORGE, F CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, AND WILLIAM M. REICHART, 0F CLEVELAND, OI-IIO, ASSGNORS TO THE CHANDLER AND PRICE COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION 0F OHIO GAUGE LOCK Application led October 13, 1927.
The present invention relates to a locking device for the back gauge of a paper cutting machine or the like, and the principal object thereof is to provide such a locking mechanism which will be positive in its eifect and easy to operate and which is very simple in construction and consequently extremely free from disorders.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims; the annexed drawings and the following description setting forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawings I Fig. 1 is a plan view of the table of such a machine; Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 2 2, of Fig. 1;
. and Fig. 3 is a further sectional detail.
The reference numeral 1 indicates the bed o f the machine which is provided with a longitudinal slot 2 running practically the full length of the bed and provided at its front end with an enlargement 3, as is clearly shown in Fig. l. A back gauge 4 is provided with a tongue 5 adapted to extend through the slot 2 and to receive on its lower end a lug 6 secured to said tongue by a screw 7. The table 1 is provided with a downwardly projecting rib 8 and adjacent one end of said slot, upon which one side of the lug 6 abuts, while the other side of said lug bears against the under side of a sliding taper gib 9 mounted in a wedge-shaped channel 10 formed on the underside of said bed and opening into said slot 2. The under side of said bed is further provided with an angular rib 11 bounding one side of said channel 10, and a plurality of brackets 12 are attached to said rib 11 and extend under the gib 9 to hold said gib sei curely in said channel.
The gib 9 is provided adjacent its forward or larger end with a reduced extension 13 provided on its free edge with rack teeth 14. Pivotally mounted at 15 on the under side of the bed is a lever 16, one end 17 of Serial No. 225,953.
which is provided with a segmental pinion 17 having teeth in mesh with the rack teeth 14, and the other end 18 of which is pivotally connected as at 19 with a link 20. The other end of said link 20 is pivotally attached, as at 21, to an arm 22 on a rockshaft 23 attached to said bed and a handle 24 is also engaged with said rockshaft 23.
Also attached to the under side of the bed 1 and adjacent the slot 2 are pulleys 25 and 26 at the front and rear end of said bed, respectively, and a cable 27 is-mounted over said pulleys and is attached to the lug 6, as clearly indicated in the drawings. A hand wheel 28 is non-rotatably attached to the pulleyY 25. It is to be understood that a chain and sprocket arrangement may be substituted for the described cable and pulley arrangement.
In operation the hand wheel 28 is rotated to'causeV rotationrof the pulley 25 which results, vthrough the agency of the cable 27 attached to the lug 6, in a movement of the back gauge 4 longitudinally of the bed 1. When the gauge 4 has been brought to the desired position on the bed 1, the handle 24 is moved about the axis of the rockshaft 23 in a clock.-
wise direction, such movement resulting in a counter-clockwise rotation of the lever 16 about the pivot 15 and a consequent recipro'- cation toward the left, as viewed in Fig. 1, of the gib 9. Such reciprocation causes the gib 9 to move to the right as viewed in Fig. l to jam the tongue 5 between said gib 9 and rib 8, thus preventing movement of the tongue 5 and the gauge 4 on the bed. It has been found that in practice the present lock is much more satisfactory than any that has been known before the present in vention in that it ismore simple-and yet more positive than any lock for this purpose which is known to the applicant. It also allows the tongue to be unusually free in the slot when not locked so that the operator can move the back gauge back and forth with slight effort, greatly increasing the productiveness of the machine. On the other hand when the tongue is locked by the taper gib-all clearance is taken up so that there is no lost motion such as exists inother types of sliding mechanisms and Which results in inaccuracy in cut-ting stock at the ends of the back gauge.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being-'made `as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the iollowingclaims or the equivalent of such state means be e1nployed.
/Ve therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as our invention'zl. In a Worlnholding table, a bed, an .adjustable back gauge mounted on said bed, means unobstructive of free access to lthe table for adjusting said gauge, Wedge means having a .thrust parallel to the plane of the table for locking said gauge infadjusted position, and hand-controls for said Vadjusting means .and saidlocking means both conveniently-.adjacent the operators station.
In a Work-holding table, a bed, a slot in said bed, a backgauge having. a tongue depending therefrom and extending through said slot, means engaging said tongue for adjusting said gauge llongitudinally of said bed,fand separate Ameans laterally engaging said tongue-for locking said gauge in adjusted position.
3. In a work-holding table, a bed, a slot, in said bed, a back gauge having avtongue depending therefrom and extendingthrough said slot, a ypulley :mounted at each end `of said bed on theunder Vsurface :of said bed, an endless cable mounted on said pulley, andattached to said tongue, a' hand Wheel connected With oneof said pulleys' for moving -said cable to adjust said back gauge longitudinally of said bed, and Wedge means laterally engaging said tongue for locking said gauge in adjusted position. y
4. In a VWork-holding table, -a bed, a slot in said bed, aback gauge having a tongue depending therefrom and `extending through said slot, means 'engaging said tongue for adjusting said gauge longitudinally of said bed. a `Wedge-shaped channel extending iongitudinally in the under side of said bedv openingV into said slot, a Wedge-shaped gib mounted in said channel and adapted to .engage said tongue, and means engaging said gib', and adapted to reciprocate the same to lock said gauge in adjustedposition. n,
5. yIn `a Work-holding table, 'a bedhaving aslot therein, a backVV gauge mounted on sai-d bedl and provided With-.a tongue extending through said slot, means enga-ging said tongue for adjusting said gauge on-said bed, a VWedge-shaped channel formed in theunderside of said bed :and opening into said slot, a Wedge-shaped gib mounted in said channel, rack teeth on said gib, a pivot mounted on the underside of said bed `adjacent one end of said channel, la segmental pinion on said pin7 the teeth thereof engaging said rack teeth, a bell crank levervp'ivoted to the under side of said bed adjacent the end thereof, and a link connecting said lever With said pinion.
