Description

w. '0. BROWN;
Coal Hod and Screen.
Patented .Sept. 1, 1857'.
N. PETERS. Fhnlo-Lflhognpher. Wnhingmn. D C
IINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WM. D. BROW'N, OF WEYMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS.
COAL-SIFTER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,082, dated September 1, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM D. BROWN, of Weymouth, in the county of Norfolk and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved method of sifting or screening coal and coal-cinders from coal-ashes by means of a portable machine intended to serve the purposes of a coal-hod, and also for sifting or screening coal and coal-cindcrs from the ashes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
My invention consists of a machine or vessel, made of wood or metal, so suspended on an axis as to allow of an oscillating movement, in which machine or vessel is a sieve or screen of metallic netting or rods, and
an arrangement by which the ashes on being sifted are separated and kept apart from the coal and cinders, and all dust therefrom prevented from escaping.
I hereby describe my aforesaid invention in connection with and referring to the accompanying drawings- Figure 1: C C is the machine; A A A the frame in which the vessel or machine is suspended; B, the axisa metallic rod by means of which the oscillating movement is obtained; D, the cover to the receptacle for the coal; d, the fastening of the cover; '1, the hinge of the cover; E, the cover of, the opening or mouth from which coal or coal-cinders, after having been sifted, are turned out; 6, the fastening and 2 the hinge of cover; F, the cover of the opening or passage by which the ashes are emptied out from the cavity or space N (Fig. 2) f, the fastening; 3, the hinge of the cover F; G,the ear of the bail; H, the bail; I I, the handles soldered to each end of the machine; T P a small iron slide passing through the casing R and resting upon the pin or catch 8 attached to the machine, to keep it stationary when desired. By raising the eccentric 2, the slide T, P is lifted at same time from pin or catch 8, allowing the machine to oscillate.
Fig. 2: M is the receptacle for coal in the first instance; J J, the sifter or screen, made of wire netting or otherwise fixed in a frame and extending from the end C, nearly the length of the machine, and fastened to the side by means of screws or rivets. N is the receptacle for the ashes coming through the sifter; K, a metallic plate forming one end of the receptacle or space M; L, a metallic plate extending nearly the length of the lower cavity or compartment, soldered to the sides and one end for the purpose of retaining the ashes in the lower cavity when the coal or coal-cinders are thrown out from the space M, above the sieve. f is a ring; f a catch on which the ring is fastened to keep in place the cover F; e a ring; 6 a catch on which ring fastens to keep in place cover E. O 0, screws or rivets fastening sieves to sides of machine.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the screen I, I, and the plates K, and L, placed in a vessel or machine, to be used as a portable coal-hod and sifter, so suspended on an axis as to allow of an oscillating or swinging movement, all arranged and operating as in the specification described.
WM. D. BROWN.
