While the invention is susceptible-of various modificatlons and alternative constructions, I have shown in the drawings and will herein describe in detail the preferred embodiment, but it is to be understood that I do not-thereby intend te limittheinvention- Another object of the invention is, to provide new andfimproved; means for controlling .the operation of the machine so that to the specific form disclosed, but'intend to;- cover all modifications and alternative constructions falling-vvithinthe spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims; I

In attaining the objects of the invention, automatic control means is provided} includinga camshaft carrying suitable cams for c swinging the; rolls to and from engagement with the Work and for stopping themachine at a proper point in the operation thereof;

More particularly described, the machine comprises a bed' or f rameb supported upon suitable/legs 6, and having journalled therein a main drive-shaft 7, extending longitudinal- 1y of, the bed. The control means for each head in the present embodiment, comprises a cam member for moving the swinging frame downwardly to bring the upper roll into an abutting relation with the lower roll, and a second means associated with the cam member to effect a withdrawal or upward swinging movement of the frame at a proper time.
To'th-is end a cam shaft 18 is journalled transversely of the base portion of the head at a point positionedtherein endwardly of the trunnions 11. The cam shaft is adapted to be driven from the main driving shaft in a suitable manner as by means of the gear train 19, 20 and 21 (Fig. 2) driving a shaft 22 which carries a worm 23 arranged to engage a worm wheel 24 mounted upon one endof the cam shaft 18. A suitably shaped 'cam disk 25 (Fig. 1)- is mounted upon-thecam shaft 18 and is engaged by a cam follower,-in the form of a roller 26 suitably journalled upon-the swinging framelO. The cam is shaped to provide a rising actuating surface 27 which effects the downward swinging movement of the frame. a dwell surface 28 during the portion of which the initial operation of rolling the work piece is accomplished, a second short rising surface 29, a second dwell surface 30 during whichthe finishing performed, and a trailing surface 31 which permits the withdrawal or upward swinging movement of the frame.
Thus, the swinging frame will first be moved rapidly downward into initial engage-' ment with the work piece by the rising surface 27 and will be held in that position while the first dwell surface 28 passes the follower, which operation forms the initial or breaking bend onthe workpiece. Preferably, the driven speed of the lower forming roll is such that the work describes one complete revo lution during the travel ofthe cam follower over the first dwell surface. Simultaneously with the completion of one revolution of the work, the second shorter rising surface 29 engages the follower to force the upper roll downwardly to perform thefinishing operation upon the work,-during which time the seconddwell'surface'30 engages the cam follower. The length of this surface is also pre determined so that thetrailing surface 31' operating step is of the cam engages the follower to permit withdrawal of the upper roll from the Work as soon as it has completed the prescribed number of revolutions. It will be seen therefore that each piece of work will be operated upon in precisely the same manner, thereby insuring the production of uniformly finished articles. I
The means associated With the cam by which the swinging frame is swung upwardly to separate the forming rolls comprises an arm 32 pivoted to the swinging frame as at 33, and provided with a projecting portion or shoulder 34 arranged to be engaged by a projecting pin 35 carried on the side of the cam. The disposition of parts is such that the engagement between the pin and the shoulder occurs immediately after the cam follower has moved from the second dwell surfa ce 30 to the trailing surface 31. v Disengagement of the shoulder 34 from the pin 35 may be effected in any suitable manner, as by providing a cam surface 36 on the arm 32 arranged to engage the edge of a slot 37 in a stationary bracket 38 through which the arm reciprocates, the cam surface 36 being disposed so that disengagement occurs substantially at the time thecam follower is between the rising and trailing surfaces on the cam. v
Manually operable means are provided for starting and stoppingthe operation of the machine, and the present invention contemplates provision of an automatic means for stopping the operation of the machine at a predetermined point; i the main drive shaft 7 extends beyond one end of the bed ofthe machine and carries rotatably thereonva pulley 39 adapted to be driven from any suitable source of power (not. shown). A driving connection between the pulley and the drive shaft comprises a clutch member 40 of any generally wellknown construction. A manual operating handle 41 rigidly mounted upon a rock shaft 42 j ournalled in the bed of the machine un-' derlying one of the heads, is operatively con nected to the clutch through intermediate linkage 43. Thus, movement of the handle in one direction or the other engages or disengages the clutch to start or stop the operation of the machine. i

In considering the cycle. of operation of the machine,it is-presumed that the drive shaft is idle and the swinging frames are in. their. upward or retarded position, and apiece of work is supported upon the pairs of'guide rollers 50 and 51. To start the operation in themachine, the lever 41 is manually'moved to engage the clutch 40 and start the drive shaft. 18 and the engagement of the rising surfaces on thecams 25 moves the swinging frames 10 downwardly to bring the upper rolls in operative position relative to the lower rolls, the downward movementbeing cushioned by the springs 48. and means associated with said cam and operable at a predetermined point in the rotation thereof to retract said movable roll rapidly from said fixed roll. 7
2- A metal working machine comprising, in combination, means for operating upon opposite ends of a drum'or the like including two sets of forming rolls, one roll of each set mounted for rotation on a fixed axis and another mounted for rotation on a swinging axis, a cam shaft for each of the swinging rolls, a cam on each of said shafts operatively engaging said rolls to move the rolls in one direction, and positively engaging cam driven means for moving said rolls in the other direction.
3. A metal working machine comprising, in combination, means for operating upon opposite ends of a drum or the like, includ ing two sets of forming rolls, one roll of each set mounted for rotation on a fixed axis and another mounted for rotation on a swinging axis, a cam shaft for each of said swinging rolls, a cam on each of said shafts engaging the swinging rolls to effect a movement of said swinging rolls toward the stationary rolls, and means establishing a direct connection between said rolls and said shafts at a predetermined point in the rotation of each shaft to move said rolls away from the fixed rolls. a l

A metal working machine comprising, in combination, a bed, a pair of heads mounted in longitudinal and spaced relation thereon and each having a forming roll rotatable'on a fixed axis, a swinging frame on each of said heads, each having a forming roll journalled therein and capable of movement with said swinging frames into and out of operative association with said fixed rolls, a cam shaft for each of said swinging frames, cams on said shafts operatively engaging said swinging frames for movement thereof to swing the rolls together, means for cushioning the cam actuated movement of said frames, and means for moving the frames in the opposite direction.
5. A metal working machine comprising, in combination, a bed, a pair of heads mounted in lonigtudinal and spaced relation thereon and each having aforming roll rotatable on a fixed axis,a swinging frame on each of said heads, each having a forming roll journalled therein and capable of movement with said swinging frames into and out of operative association with said fixed rolls, a cam shaft for each of said swinging frames,'cams on said shafts operatively engaging said swinging frames for movement thereof to swing the rolls together, and a detachable engagement between said frame and said cam, engageable at a predeterminedpoint in the movement of said cam to movelsaid swinging frames in the opposite direction. 7
6. A metal working machine comprising,
in combination, a bed, a pair of heads mounted in longitudinal and spaced relation thereon and each having a forming roll rotatable on a'fixed axis, aswingingframe on each of said heads each having a forming roll journalled therein capable of movement with said swinging frames into and out of operative association with said fixed rolls, a cam shaft for each of said swinging frames, cams .on said shafts operatively engaging said swinging frames for movement thereof to swing the rolls together, an actuating element rotating with each of said cams, arms on said frames extending in juxtaposed relation to said actuating elements, means providing an engagement between said elements and said arms at a predetermined point in the movement of said cams to effect a withdrawal of said swinging roll out of engagement with the fixed roll, and means for disengaging the arm from said elements upon further movement of said cams.
7 A metal working machine of the character described, comprising, in combination, means for operating upon the end of a drum or the like including a set of forming rolls, one mounted for rotation on a fixed axis and another mounted for rotation on a swingable axis, means connected to the swingable roll for moving said roll into and out of operative association with the fixed roll, and means for cushioning the movement of said swingable roll in one direction.
8. A metal working machine of the character described, comprising, in combination,
means for operating upon the end of a drum in combination, means for operating upon the opposite ends of a drumor the like, including two sets of forming rolls one roll of each set mounted for rotation on a fixed axis and another mounted for rotation on a swingable axis, means for driving one'of said rolls, a clutch controlling said'drivin means, automatic control means operated rom said driving means for moving said swinging roll into and out of operative association with said fixed roll, said control means including a trip mechanism operable when the swinging roll is in its remote position from said fixed roll to disengage said clutch.

A metal working machine comprising, in combination, means for operating upon the opposite ends of a drum or the like, including two sets of forming rolls one roll of each set mounted for rotation on a fixed axis and another mounted for rotation on a swingable axis, means for driving one of said rolls, a clutch controlling said driving means, a shaft operatively connected to said driving means, means on said shaft automatically controlling the swinging movement of said swinging roll, and means providing a connection between said shaft and said clutch operative at a predetermined position of said swinging roll to disengage said clutch. 7 a

A metal working machine, comprising, in combination, means for operating upon the opposite ends of a drum or the like, including two sets of forming rolls one roll of each set mounted for rotation on a fixed axis and another mounted for rotation on a swingable axis, automatic driving means connected to said swinging roll for initially moving said roll into operative engagement with the drum, and subsequently returning said roll to its initial position after completion of the forming operation, and means for discharging the drum from the machine after the swinging roll has been moved out of engagement therewith.

A metal working machine comprising, in combination, means for operating upon the opposite ends of a drum or the like, including two sets of forming rolls one roll of each mounted for rotation on a fixed axis and another mounted for rotation on a swingable axis, an automatic control means including a driven shaft operable at predetermined points in the operation of the machine to move said swinging roll into and out of operative engagement with the drum, said control means being further operable to effect the discharge of the work from the machine when the swinging roll is out of engagement with the drum to stop the machine.

A metal working machine comprising, in combination, means for operating upon the opposite ends of a drum or the like, including two sets of forming rolls one roll of each set mounted for rotation on a fixed axis and another mounted for rotation on a swingable axis, means for supporting the work in position relative to said forming rolls, and means automatically operable to move the work from said supporting means after completion of the forming operation. 7

A metal working machine comprising, in combination, means for operating upon the opposite ends of a drum or the like, including two sets of forming rolls one roll of each set mounted for rotation on a fixed axis and another mounted for rotation on a swingable axis, a pair of guide rolls for each set of forming rolls arranged to support the work in position relative to said forming rolls, and means for lowering the opposing guide rolls in each set at a predetermined point in the operation of the machine to permit the work to move from the machine.

A metal workingmachine, comprising, in combination, means 'for operating upon the opposite ends of a drum or the like, including two sets of forming rolls-one roll of each set mounted for rotation on, a fixed axis and another mounted for rotation on a swingable axis, a pair of opposed guide rolls for each set of 1 01111111 2 rolls arranged to support work in position relative to said forming rolls, cam operated means for moving 0pposmg rolls 1n eachset to a remote position,
and guiding means positioned adjacent said guiding rolls for receiving and directing the work out of the machine as. said guiding rolls are moved to the remote position. 7

A metal working machine comprising, in combination, means for operating upon the opposite ends of a drum or the like, including two sets of forming rolls, one roll of each set mounted for rotation on a fixed axis and another for rotation on a swingable axis, means including a cam shaft for each of said sets of rolls operable to move said swinging rolls into and out of operable engagement with said fixed rolls, opposed guide'rolls for each of said sets of forming rolls positioned. properly to support the work relativeto said forming rolls, and. cams onsaid cam shafts, means operatively connecting opposing guide rolls with said cams, said cams being shaped to effect a withdrawal of the guide rolls connected'therewith to a remote position when said swinging rolls are out of engagement with the fixed rolls to permit the work to roll from the machine.

In a metal working machine, in combination with a pair of forming rolls adapted to operate upon a drum or the like, a pair of guide rolls arranged to support the work in position between the forming rolls, means operable to move one of said guide rolls to a remote position and an inclined track underlying the guide rolls and supporting the work upon withdrawal of the guide rolls until withdrawal is complete. j

A metal working machine combining means foroperating upon the opposite ends of a drum or'the like including two sets of form ing rolls, one roll of'each set mounted for rotation on a fixed axis and another mounted for rotation on a swinga-ble ax s, cam shaft having a cam thereon, a cam follower swingable with the swinging roll and adapted to be engaged by said cam for movement of said swingable roll into position adjacent said fixed roll, and coacting means for rapidly withdrawing said swingable roll comprising, a spring tensioned by the movement of the swingable roll toward the fixed roll, andmeans operating at a predetermined point in the rotation of said shaft to effectmovement of the swingable roll in the direction in which it is urged by said spring.

A metal working machine combining a bed, a head mounted thereon having a forming roll rotated on a fixed axis, a swinging frame on said headhaving a forming roll journaled therein capable of movement with said swinging frame into and out of operative association with said fixed roll, a cam engaging said frame for movement thereof to swing the roll into operative association with said fixed roll, an arm pivoted to said frame ex-- tending in juxtaposed relation to said cam, a bracket fixed to said head guiding said arm, a pin rotating with said cam and engaging said arm at a predetermined point in the movement of said cam to effect a withdrawal of said swinging roll out of engagement with the fixed roll and a cam surface on said arm engaging with said bracket to disengage the arm from said pin.

A metal working machine combining means for operating upon the ends of a drum or the like including a set of forming rolls, a swinging frame having one roll of each set journaled therein, another roll of each set mounted for rotation on a fixed axis, a cam shaft for said frame, a cam on said shaft, an
arm pivoted to said frame, means operable with said cam for engaging said arm to effect withdrawal of said swinging roll from engagement with said fixed roll, means for releasing the engagement efiecting with drawal, and springs mounted on opposite sides of the fixed roll to cushion the return movement of said swinging roll upon release of the engagement efiecting withdrawal.

A metal working machine comprising, in combination, power actuated drive means for operating upon the opposite ends'of a drum or the like includingtwo sets of forming rolls, one roll of each set mounted for rotation on a fixed axis and another mounted for rotation on a swingable axis, and means operablethrough positive connection with said drive means at predetermined'points in the operation'of the machineto move said swingable roll into and out of operative engagement with the drum.

A metal working machine comprising, in combination, means for operating upon the opposite ends of a drum or like including two sets of forming rolls, one roll of each set mounted for rotation on a fixed axis and an other-mounted for rotation on a swingable axis, means for driving one of said rolls, a clutch controlling sald driving means, means operatively connected to said driving means automatically controlling the swinging movement of said swingable rolls, andmeans operative at a predetermined position of said swingable roll to disengage said clutch.

A metal working machine comprising means for operating upon the end of a drum or the like including a set of forming rolls, one mounted for rotation on a fixed axis and another mounted for rotation on a swingable axis, positive means for moving said swingable roll into operative position with respect to said fixed Itoll, positive means for retracting said swingable roll from such operative position, and a spring operative upon move ment of said swingable roll into operative po sition' to urge said roll in the direction of movement imparted by said retracting means to accelerate such retraction.
