Description

June 2, 1931. M. R. LA SALA ETAL TOY PISTOL Filed 001:. 21. 1929 NVENTOR W5 v LUM/LMLE LULZZLA.
ATTORNEY Patented June 2, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TOY PISTOL Application filed October 21, 1929. Serial No..40 1,078.
This invention relates to improvements in toy pistols in which a projectile is hurled to a considerable distance by the force imparted to it from a tensioned elastic member upon its release.
Such toys are in demand by boys and particularly so if they are simulative in appearance of a real pistol or like fire arm; moreover they are relatively safe as the impact of the projectile is limited by the elasticity of the tensioned member.
However such toys seldom shoot with accuracy, require considerable skill to manipulate properly, are readily subject to dis- 1 order and are relatively expensive to produce.
It is therefore one of the objects of the present invention to provide a toy pistol strongly resembling the real article in its 2 looks and actuated by a trigger closely approximating in appearance and function that of an actual pistol.
A further feature is in the provision of .a toy pistol which will discharge a projectile with surprising accuracy and in which its flight is enchan'ced by its shape.
Another purpose is to produce an extremely simple device, the parts of which are non-separable and so contrived as to maintain themselves indefinitely in operative condition, while at the same time are cheaply manufactured and assembled.
These and other advantageous objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention in firing condition.
Figure 2 is an interior view, one of the side walls being removed, showing the parts in position to fire in full lines and in firlng position in broken lines.
lock and barrel, is fiat and level throughout its entire length presenting an unobstructed plane.
The end of the barrel is open, as at 18 and directly opposite a pairof openings 19 are i formed in the body 13, while in the lower Wall of the lock is an elongated opening 20.
Enclosed between the sides 11 is a wire 21 bent to form a hook 22 extending through the barrel and slightly outward at the opening 18, the wire being curved downwardly to extend outward through the lock opening 20, thence turned tightly re-entrant to constitute a trigger 23, thereafter continuing upward, as at 24, to a straight portion 25 in register with the part 21, then extended outwardly through one of the openings 19 to form a flat horizontal loop 26 the inner end terminating in a member 27 disposed adjacent the opposite surface of the wall and acting as a guide for the wire when the trigger is moved. 7
Formed on one of the side members shaped to constitute the back of the body is a spur28 adapted to eng ge th bight of an elastic band 29, its strands passing over the fiat loop 26, thence disposed over the top surface 17, to extend over the front end and engage the hook 22.
It will be obvious that the band, as thus stretched, impinges on the loop 26, tending to press the wire inwardly and at the same time the pull on the hook 22 operates in the same direction.
To reloa'd,the band, which is at all times level upper surface throughout its length, a fixed detent to engage one end of said band, a trigger accessible below said body, means integral with said trigger to retain the opposite end of said band, means for guiding said trigger, and means combined therewith to release said band from the detent.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures.
MICHAEL R. LA SALA. FRANK SIMONE.
held by the loop 22, is drawn are over the spur 29, the loop 26 being at that time drawn forward by the pull of the band at the opposite end of thewire. r
Although the foregoing is descriptive of the preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent that; minor changes may be made in its construction without the exercise of invention or conflicting with the scope of the claims hereto appendedj Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. A toy pistol comprising a hollow body having a handle, lock and barrel, a spur extending outwardly from the rear of said body, there being openings above the spur at the end 'of the barrel and lower wall of the lock, a member having a hook-extending through the barrel and a flattened loop extending through the opening above said spur, a trigger'formed on'said member extending through the opening in the lock, and an elastic band engaged by said hook at one end and by said spur at the opposite end, said band being d-isengageabl'e from said spur by the flattened loop upon drawing the trigger rearwardly.
2; A toy pistol'comprising a hollow body having a flat unobstructed top, a detent to engage a tensioned elastic element at the rear, and a unitary movable member guided V in said body, said member having a part to engage said elastic element atthe front, a trigger, and means to disengage said element from said detent upon retraction of the trigger.
3. A toy pistol using an endless elastic band foifm'otive force, comprising a body havinga detentat its rear to engage a big-ht of said band, a single slidableelement guided in said body having apart to engage the opposite bight of said band, a trigger formed on said element, means on said elementto release said band from saidd'etent, and a projectile engaged in the strands of said band to be hurled upon its release.
4. A toy pistol. using 'an endless elastic band for motive force, comprising atwo part metal body having an unobstructed
