This invention relates to railway car'trucks and more particularly to the construction of the side frames thereof and the supporting of `the bolster thereby.
The principal object of my invention, generally considered, is to provide trucks particularly adapted for railway cars in which the side frames thereof are rigidied by an integra-l bridge which extends between intermediate portions of the bolster guide columns or struts leaving a space above the same .for the bolster and below the same for the sprmg plank, said'bridge portion serving to limit downward movement of the bolster and prevent the springs from going solid, means being provided for locking the bolster in place with respect to the associated side frames comprising a spring'pcap provided with upstanding outer guide portions which interlock with the bolster.
An object of my invention is to provide a car truck in which the side frames thereof are stiii'ened by integral bridges eXtendmg-,between intermediate portions of the bolster guide columns leaving bolster openings thereabove and spring plank openings therebeneath said bridges being-formed as laterally spaced portions receiving bolsters springs therebetween as well as outwardly and inwardly thereof, the tension member of the side frame being laterally widened for supporting such bolster springs. The inner and outer of said springs supporting a spring a springl c ap which is apertured over the intermedlate springs whereby it may7 be dropped upon removing said outer and inner springs, said spring cap being provided with upstanding lugs engaging the bolster guide columns or struts to provide removable outer guides, an -associated bolster bein correspondingly notched to interlock wlth s ald guides land being supported on said spring cap and springs. y

A further object of my invention is to provide a car truck with side frames stiiened by an integral bridge portion extendin between intermediate portions of the bo ster guide. columns 'leaving a space thereabove for the bolster and a space therebeneath for the associated spring plank, a sprin lank received on the tension member of sai rame beneath the bridge portion and springs supsprings extending between laterally spaced portions of the bridge member and the other springs being spaced on opposite' sides of'said bridge member, a spring cap supported on the outer and inner springs and apertured overthe intermediate springs, said spring cap being provided with upstandin vlugs adapted to form removable outer gui es for the associated bolster and a bolster associated therewith and interlocking with said outer guide portions,vthe height of said guide portions being such that the bolster is disengageable therefrom upon removal of the outer and inner springs and dropping the spring cap over the intermediate springs to the bridge member and raising Said bolster.
-Other objects and advantages of the ini vention .relating to the particular arrangement and construction of the various parts will become apparent as the description proceeds. l

. 6 and the bolster is Referring to the drawings in detail, like parts being designated by like reference characters, there is shown a side frame l with a compression member 2, a tension member 3, and bolster guide columns or struts 4 spacing intermediate portionsof said compression and tension members and leaving a bolster opening 5 therebetween. The intermediate portions of said bolster guide columns 4 are joined by an integral bridge member (S which is spaced from the compression member a suflicient distance for receiving the associated bolster 7 and from the tension member a sufficient distance for receiving the associated spring plank 8., Said bridge greatly7 rigidiiies the frame and at the same time decreases the size of the bolster opening 5 so that the associated bolster 7 cannot be dropped for withdrawal in accordance with usual practice. Said bolster is therefore formed without the usual integral outer guides but is ,preferably provided with the usual inner guides 9.
The upper web 10`of the tension member 3 is widened between the bolster guide columns 4 to provide the required spring seating area therefor. The bolster springs 11 are supported on either side of the bridge member 6 and said bridge member is preferably formed as laterally spaced portions whereby the intermediate bolster springs are received therebetween.
The spring plank extends through the opening 12 between the bridge member 6 on the spring seating portion 10 of thev tension member 3 and all the bolster springs 11 are supported thereon. Supported in turn on said bolster springs is a. spring cap 13 provided with upstanding lugs 14 engaging the bolster guide columns 4 to provide outer lugs and wearing portions for the associated bolster 7. Said bolster 7 for that purpose is notched as indicated at 15 to receive the corresponding portions of the lugs 14 whereby said lugs interlock with the bolster and provide outer guides for the same.
In order to facilita-te removal and insertion of the bolster the spring cap 13 is preferably apertured over c the intermediate springspl and the bolster 7 is formed with a corresponding boss 17 interlocking insaid aperture whereby said spring cap and its associated guide lugs are disengageable from the bolster upon removal of the inner and outer springs only, said cap being dropped over the intermediate springs on account of the aperture therein. The height of the lugs 13 is such that the bolster'clears said lugs when the spring capis resting on the bridge raised to the compression member 2.
From the foregoin disclosure it will be apparent that I have evised agrailway truck construction in which the side frames thereof are strengthened by Ln-integral bridge member between intermediate portions of the guide columns and so spaced from the compression and tension members that provision is' made for receiving both the bolster and spring plank in normal positions. Said bolster is provided with the usual integral inner guides and .removable outer guides are -provided therefor by using a. spring cap with upstanding lugs interlocking with the bolster and engaging the outer portions of the bolster guide columns.l Said spring cap is adapted to be dropped upon removal of the inner and outer springs only by being apertured over the intermediate springs which springs are preferably received between' transversely spaced portions of the bridge and therefore less easily removed.
The lugs on the spring cap are preferably not as high as the depth of the bolster whereby disengagement between the bolster and spring cap may be effected upon removing the inner and outer springs by dropping the spring cap on vthe bridge and raising the bolster to the compression member.
In the present embodiment I have shown the bolster springs as comprisingl two spring units disposed outwardly and inwardly of the bridge and another pair of spring units disposed between the spaced portions of the bridge but it is obvious that I do not wish to be limited to this specific disclosure.
Having now described my invention, I claim,-
1. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a compression member, a tension member, struts interposed therebetween and spaced to leave a bolster opening, that portion of the tension member beneath the bolster opening being laterally widened for supporting bolster springs, a bridge member connecting said struts and formed as two laterally spaced portions. permitting the reception oa plurality of longitudinally disposed springs therebetween, bolster springs supported on said portions of the tension member between and on either side .of said laterally spaced portions of the bridge member, aspring cap supported on the outer andinner springs of said bolster springs, a bolster formed with inner guides and notched outwardly of said guides, and upstanding lugs on said spring cap receivedin said notches and forming removable outer guides for said bolster.
2. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a compression member, a tension member, struts interposed therebetween and spaced to leave a bolster opening, that portion of the tension member beneath the bolster'. opening being laterally widened for supporting bolster springs, a bridge member connecting said struts and comprising a pair of portions so spaced that a. plurality of longitudinally disposed bolster springs may be received therebetween, bol- 'ster ,springs supported 4on said laterally widened portions of the tension member between an on either side of said bridge portions, a spring cap supported on the outer and lnner sprlngs of saidbolster springs and apertured .over the intermediate springs between those portions ofthe bridge member whereby said spring cap may be dropped.

4. In a car truck, in combination, a side 'frame formed with a compression member,

.tension member, struts interposed therebetween and spaced to leave a bolster opening, the upper web of the tension member beneath the bolster opening being widened for properly supporting bolster springs, a pair of laterally spaced tie members connecting intermediate portions of said struts, a sprin plank supported on said laterally widene upper web of the tension member beneath saidI tie members, bolster springs supported on said spring plank outwardly of, inwardly of and intermediate the tie members, a spring cap supported on the vouter and inner springs only of saidfbolster springs and apertured over the intermediate springs whereby it may be dropped upon removal of said outer and inner s rings, and a bolsterformed with integral inner guides adapted to engage the 'illner ortions of said struts 'and notched and e space from said struts outwardly thereof,
said spring capy being provided with upstanding angular lugs receivable in said notches, filling the space between said bolster and lugs and providing outer bolstei` guides.
8. In a car truck, in combination, a side frame formed with a compression member,
a tensionmember, bolster guide columns interposed therebetween and spaced to leave a window opening, that portion of the upper web of the tension member beneath the window member -being widened beyond the side webs thereof for supporting bolster springs,
a tie member connecting intermediate portions of said'bolster guide columns and dividing the window opening into two parts for respectively receiving the associated bolster and spring plank, a spring plank supported on said upper web of the tension member beneath the tie member, bolster springs supported on said spring plank adjacent said tie member, a spring cap supported on said bolster springs and provided with upstanding portions providing removable outer bolster guides, and a bolster supported on said spring cap and interlocking with said bolster guides.
9. A spring cap for bolster springs comprising a normally horizontal portion adapted for support by inner and outer springs and apertured for passing over intermediate springs whereby said cap may be dropped uplon removal of said outer and inner springs on 1%. A. spring cap for bolster springs comprising a normally horizontal plate portion adapted for support by the outer and inner springs only of said bolster springs and apertured over the intermediate springs thereof whereby it is adapted to receive a corresponding lug on the associated bolster, said cap being provided with upstanding' lugs adapted to interlock in corresponding notches in an associated bolster, and providing removable outer guides therefor.
