' My invention relates to vises'andlike supports adapted. to retain work in fixed position while being operated upon, and more particularly to devices of this character for holding separable halves of rock bits or the like 7 containing cutters, wherein the halves must be separated for oleaning'the. bits and replacing thecutters. V
In ordinary practice, the aid of several 10, men is required to hold a bit sufliciently rigidlyto permit attaching bolts to be re moved for separating the halves of the bit, and to separate the halves after the bolts are removed, and great difficulty is experienced in holding the halvesof the bit, rigid while the same are being cleaned or while the cutters are being replacecLjone reason for the difficulty being thatthe two halves have differing'exterior contour and the parts, therefore, can not besecurely retained in ordinary vises or clamping means. L
The principal objects of my invention therefore, are to provide a vise adapted to snugly seat andsecurely retain a bit or like 5 memberhaving two or more parts while the parts are being separated or" otherwise worked on, to anchor the parts of the bit in the device'for preventing shifting of the same in lateral or rotative directions, to provide a-clamp member associated with avise adapted to facilitate the displacement of one half of a bit from the other, to effect the secure anchoring of the displaced bit half inthe movable clamping member, and to reduce the labor and time necessary for separating halves of a bit and returning the halves to assembled condition. y

Referring more in detail to the drawings '1 designates a base member includingparallel side walls 2 having outwardlylaterally extending ears -3 mounted on longitudinal spaced beams 4 and fixed thereto by bolts 5, and a body or web 6 connecting the walls and extending laterally outwardly in one direction beyond the same to form an extensive seat for work. 1 j 7 .1 i
'The walls and web are preferably'formed to provide a transverse grooveforming a socket portion having a. horizontal bottom wall 7 and verticallyexte'nding sidewalls 8,
and oppositely extending, substantially horizontal' wings 9 arcuately upturned at their outer edges to provide sidefianges 10 having inclined V forming to the outer'contour of a bit, including-a half '11, andfla half 12 provided with an aperture. 13 to receivea bar-for lifting the latter half from the former, the

The base is adapted to receive the half 11 of thebit, and the base and other parts of the device later described maybe adapted as described to receive portions of work having different contour.
The ends of the walls have longitudinally projecting ears 15 at their upper edgesr for a purpose later described, and upwardly extending ears 16 at their opposite ends in separate halves" faces, theiwhole'forming a seat conwhich is mounted a bolt or hinge pin 17 for pivotally attaching a clamping member, presently described in detail, to the base.
The clamping member includes parallel side plates 18 having hinge bars 19 mounted on the pin 17, and a socket-forming web portion 20 similar to the web of the base including a bottom 21, side walls 22, wings 23, and flanges 24, and adapted to receive the opposite half 12 of the bit. The side plates 18 are provided with laterally extending feet at their lower edges opposite the hinges to engage the supporting beams and support the outwardly hinged clamping member in extending position as illustrated in Fig. 1.
Pivotally mounted on longitudinally projecting ears 26 at the outer ends of the side plates of the clamping member is a loop. or latching hook 27 adapted to engage the ears on the base when the clamping .member is moved into clamping relation therewith as presently described. The web portion of the clamping member is provided with slots 28 extending through the side walls 22 and through the relatively horizontal wings 23 in the position shown in Fig. 1, whereby a locking pin 29 retained in engagement with the clamping member by a flexible connector such as a chain 30 may be inserted through the slots and through the aperture 13 in the bit half to secure the bit half to the clamping member.
The bit is secured to a cage 31 for use, and means such as pipe tongs 32 may be employed for removing the cage from the assembled bit halves.
In using the invention the assembled bit, when taken from a well and having a water cage or the like screwthreadedly attached thereto, may be lowered onto the opened clamp to seat the half 11 of the bit in the base, and the clamping member may then be moved hingedly into overlying relation I with the bit, the socket of the clamping member being adapted to snugly engage the upwardly presented surface of the half 12 of the bit.
The latching loop may then be engaged with the cain-like edges of the base ears to securely lock the bit in the device. The irregular contour of the bit halves received in the formed socket portions of the device will prevent the bit from rotating when means illustrated in Fig. 2 is applied to the cage to remove the same.
The pin may be inserted into the slots of the coupling member and through the aperture in the bit to further anchor the bit against longitudinal or rotative movement in the vise. i
The bolts may thenbe removed from the bit to permit separation of the halves.
The retainingpin, however, is particularly provided to' latch the upper half of the bit in the figure to the clamping member so that when the halves have been disengaged by removal of the connecting bolts the clamping member may be released by removing the latching hook from the ears of the base and the clamping member moved hingedly into laterally extending position as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, and in dotted lines in Fig. &.
In this position both halves of the bit are in suitable condition to be worked upon, in each case the cutters being presented upwardly to the workman and the portions requiring cleaning or oiling being easily accessible.
Attention is called to the utility of the latching loop as a handle, which may be grasped for pivotally shifting the upper half of the bit. away from the lower half.
When the bit portions have been cleaned and otherwise attended to and the cutters have been replaced, the clamping member may be hingedly moved into overlying re.- lation with the base, thus restoring the half 12 to assembled position. The latching loop may then be engaged with the ears of the base, and the bolts may then be inserted to secure the two halves together, the halves being retained in engagement by the secure clamping of the assembly in the vise. When the halves have been connected, the clamping member may be hingedly displaced for permitting access to the reassembled bit.
WVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A bit or like vise including a base having a seat conforming substantially to the contour of one half of a bit, a clamping member having a socket conforming substantially to the contour of the other half of said bit including Wings provided with apertures registrable with an aperture in said other half of the bit, and means insertable in said registering apertures for securing the clamping member to said apertured half of the bit.
2. A bit or like vise of the character described including a base comprising side plates and a web forming a seat conforming substantially to the contour of one half of a bit, a clamping member having a socket conforming substantially to the contour of the other half of said bit including arcuate Wings provided with apertures registrable with an aperture in said other half of the bit to receive securing means, and means having flexible connection with the clamping member for securing said clamping member to said apertured half of the bit.
3. A bit or like vise including a base having parallel side walls and a transverse seat conforming substantially to the contour of one half or a bit, a clamping member having parallel side walls and a transverse socket conforming substantially to the contour of the other half of said bit, means for. pivotally connecting the side Walls of the base and clamping member, projecting ears on the side walls of the base, and common 'locking means pivotally connected to the side Walls of the clamping member and engageable With said ears for locking the clamping and base members together.
