WILLIAM WATKINS, OF WEST JOPLIN, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN WEATHER-STRIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,683, dated August 1, 1876; application filed February 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM WATKINS, of West Joplin, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Weather Strip, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 is a cross-section of my improved weather-strip, shown as applied to the lower edge of the door. Fig. 2 is a detail view of a piece of the strip, a part of the metallic plate being broken away.

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved weather-strip for doors, windows, and other places, to prevent air, rain, and snow from entering, and which shall be SlDI- ple in construction, easily applied, and not liable to give way and become ineffective.
The invention consists in an improved weather-strip, formed of a metallic plate, having its edges bent over upon themselves to form grooves to receive the edges of a strip of flexible material, said flexible strip being made wider than the said metallic plate, to give its middle part a semi-tubular or U form, as hereinafter fully described.
A is a strip or plate, of thin sheet metal, the side edges of which are bent over upon themselves to. form grooves to receive the side edges of a strip, B, of rubber, cloth, leather,
or other suitable material.
The strip B is made of such a width that whenits edges areinserted in the grooves of the sheet-metal strip A its middle part may be in the form ot'a semi-tube, or U-shaped, as shown in Fig. 1. By this construction the sides of the projecting middle part of the flexible material B will brace each other so as to keep it in place, while its edges, being secured by pressing down the edges of the sheet-metal strip A, will be held securely in place, and at the same time protected from the weather.
When the Weather-strip A B is attached to the lower edge of a door, it may close against a half-round 0r beveled iron bar, attached to the threshold of the door, or against the threshold itself.
The weather-strip A B may be applied in any place where a weather-strip is required.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An improved weather-strip, formed of the metallic plate A, having its edges bent over upon themselves to form grooves to receive the edges of the strip B, of flexible material, said strip B being made wider than the said plate A, to give its middle part a semi-tubular or U form, substantially as herein shown and described.
