Description

METAL JAR CLOSURE Filed Jan. 8, 1927 i iii 0i].
lower edge of the Patented May .19, 1931 PATENT, OFFICE THOMAS L. TALIAFERRO, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB, TO PHOENIX-HERMETIC COMIANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, .A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS METAL JAR CLOSURE Application filed January 8, 1927.
to form a smooth rounded bead at the outerface of the closure, the outer surface of which bead is a continuation of the outer surface of the depending'flange in which the thread or threads are formed.
In the drawings which showby way of illustration one embodiment of the invention- Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section, showing on an enlarged scale, my improved cap or closure and a sectioni of a jar with which it is adapted to be use Fig. 2 is a section through a portion of the cap1 or closure on even a more enlarged scale, an
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the cap or closure and the jar as provided with a plurality of threads instead of a single thread.
The invention is directed to a metal cap or closure for jars. One of the purposes of the invention is to provide a metal closure wherein' the outer face of the depending flange or skirt of the closure shall have exposed to view only the outer surface of the metal from the top of the closure to the extreme lower edge of the depending portion.
The cap or'closure is preferably made of one plece of metal. 7 The metal maybe lacquered or decorated in the sheet in the usual manner.
'It is'then cut and drawn to form a proper blank which is subjected to the proper tools for knurling the depending flange or skirt of the cap, and forming the thread or threads in said depending portion. The invention is especially directed to the construction of the cap. The lower edge of outwardly, thence downthe blank is bent ones around the closure.
.bent outwardly. This is for Serial No. 159,895.
wardly and thence inwardly so as to form a smooth rounded bead at the outer face of the cap or closure at the lower edge of the depending flange or skirt. The extreme lower edge is inturned so that the hand of a person screwing the cap-or closure on or off from the jar is protected from contact with the rawredge of metal. The raw edge of the metal is also concealed from view by this inturning of the extreme lower edge.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, my improved cap or closure consists of a single piece of metal shaped so as to form a top portion 1 and a depending flange or skirt 2. Adjacent the top portion, the flange is provided with a knurl 3 of the usual character. At the extreme lower edge of the flange, the metal is bent outwardly at 4, thence downwardly at 5,, and thence inwardly at 6. This forms a curved bead of substantially uniform cross section throughout, and extending all the way around the lower edge of the cap or closure. As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the flange or skirt is provided with a single thread 7 which extends a little more than This thread is formed in the usual way, and includes inwardly curved portions and outwardly curved portions which are adapted to engage the outwardly projecting thread 8 on the jar 9. The thread begins at a point just below the knurl, and terminates at av point just above the head. In Fig. 3 of the drawings, I
have shown a plurality of threads 10, 10, and
the jar is likewise provided with a plurality of threads 11 with which the multiple threads on the cap or closure cooperate. The invention is not directed to the particular construction or arrangement of the threads, except that the threads are to be located between this head at the lower edge of the closure and the knurl adjacent the top of the closure. The portion at the extreme lower edge of the flange is formed to be int-urned at 6, which conceals the raw edge of the metal from view, and aids in the forming of the curved bead at the lower edge of the flange. at the lower edge of the flange is formed to be the pu ose of providing the entrance opening to the c p,
The portion 4 r so that the thread on the jar can pass through said entrance and engage the thread groove or thread projection in the flange or skirt 7 of the ca In other words, the interior diameter o the extreme lower edge of the flange is slightly greater than the maximum diameter of the jar mouth at the thread thereon. In my improved form of cap or closure, the same surface of the metal is exposed to view throughout the entire extent of the flange as at the top ofthe closure, and if'the closure is,
- therefore, decorated ina certain color by the enameling or c ating thereof, this color'will be uniform throughout the entire extent of the cap or closure as viewed when on-the jar.
. Furthermore, the exterior of the flange of the cap or closure is free from pockets, so that little or no dust will accumulate on the side a wall of the cap. This bead at the lower edge of the .cap or closure strengthens the edge and forms a cap whereinthe lower edge thereof is symmetrical all the way around the cap.
The subject-matter described aboveis fully disclosed in a, prior application Serial No. 475,922, filed by me'on June 8, L921;
It is-obvious that minor changes ma be made inthe shaping of .the parts wit out departing from the spirit of the-invention as set forth in the appended claim. 7
: Havingthus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters-Patent, is
A metal closure for jars comprising a top and a depending flange formed lntegral therewith, said flange havin a thread fo rmed therein-adapted to engage a hread on the jar, the upper'portion of said depending flange being knurled and the lower portion of the depending flange being curved outwardly and downwardly, thence inwardly to form a strengtheningbead, the outer surface of said depending flange being continuous and extending in a downward direction, the extreme inner diameter of said inturned edge portion being greater thanthe diameter ofthe threads on the Jar, said threads in the depending flange being disposed between the.
knurled portion and said bead, said head be-' ing of substantially uniformflcross section throughout.
In testimon whereof, I aflix my signature;
, TH MAS L; TALIAFERRO.
