w. H. SMITH LOCKING SYSTEM FOR CONTAINERS Filed Feb. 15, 1950 Inventor MW/am H Sm/HI JMI/L A tior ne y Patented May 19, 1931 at caries WILLIAM E. SMITH, OF COPELAND, IDAHO LOCKING SYSTEM FOR CONTAINERS Application file} February 15, 1930. Serial No. 428,695.
My invention relates to locking systems for containers and is particularly adapted for use in connection with gasoline drums or casks. Certain objects of the invention are to provide means whereby both the bung-plug and th vent-plug of a container may be locked against displacement at one and the same time. Further objects of the invention are to provide adjustable means whereby the locking system is adapted for use on containers of various sizes.
lVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the novel construction, adaptation, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed. These objects are accomplished by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings; wherein Figure 1 is a view in vertical section of the upper portion of a container with the locking system installed and shown in elevation;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the locking system; 7
Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the system and showing the plugs in vertical section; and
Fig. 4 is a detail view in elevation ofone of the plugs.
Referring to the drawings throughout which like reference numerals indicate like parts in the several views, the numeral 5 designates a portion of a gasoline drum having a relatively large threaded bunghole 6 at one of its top sides and a relatively small hreaded venthole 7 oppositely disposed on its other side. A threaded bung-plug 8 is adapted to be installed in said bunghole and a smaller corresponding vent-plug 9 is adapted to be installed in said venthole.
The bung-plug 8 is tapped on its top to receive a threaded plug 10 which is provided with an upstanding elongated eye 11 as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, and the vent-plug 9 is likewise tapped to receive a smaller plug 12 having a corresponding elongated eye 13. Said plug eyes are each elongated so that the eye 14 of rods 15 may pass therethrough as will be understood.
After the eyes 14: of the rods 15 have been assed through the eyes 11 and 13 of the . lugs 10 and 12 respectively a relatively arge ring 16 is welded into each of said eyes. The other ends of said rods are each provided with an eye 17' and a ring 18 is correspondingly welded or otherwise secured through said eyes thus completing the means for slidably and permanently securing the rods 15 in the eyes 11 and 13. The slidable arrangement of said rods provides adjustable means whereby the device will fit different sizes of containers or containers having various distances between their. bung and vent v plugs. V
The rods 15 are of such lengths that the rings 18 will be juxtaposed when said rods are brought into alignment as shown in F ig. 2. Said rings are then secured together by a padlock 19 as shown in Fig. 1 whereby the plugs 8 and 9 cannot be turned or removed. It will thus be apparent that I have pro-' vided a locking system whereby the contents of a drum, cask or other container are safeguarded against theft, leakage or the like.
Having thus described nay-invention, it being understood that minor changes in its construction and arrangement may be resorted to without departing from its scope and spirit, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is A lockin device for a container having a bung-plug and a vent-plug, a tap plug for said bung and ventplugs, and an elongated eye for each of said tap plugs, comprising a rod slidably disposed through each of said eyes, an eye on each end of each of said rods, a ring permanently disposed through each of said red eyes, and locking means for securing the two juxtaposed rings together when said rods are disposed in alignment.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
