IMPROVEMENT IN CHILDRENS CHAIRS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,602, dated August 1, 1876 application filed December 9,1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, EMIL LASS and CHARLES GLARNER, both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Childrens Oh airs, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of our improvement. Fig. 2 is'a front elevation of the same.

Our invention consists in combining, with a childs chair, a play table by means of swinging arms, (one or more,) which are provided with a fastening device adapted to retain them in an upright position, in such a manner that the'playtable is susceptible of being adjusted to a position immediately in front of the chair-seat, and to a lower or different position, in the table a child may be seated in the chair, while in its other position thechild is prevented from falling.

It consists also in a novel form of fastening device for the swinging arms in the form of a plate, which is fastened to the chair, and provided with a slot, which receives in it a pin projecting from the arm, in addition to a pin which enters a slot in the arm, one of the slots being made with a lateral opening, whereby it is adjusted on and oti' its pin, while the remaining slot serves to permit of such adjustment, as we will hereinafter more fully explain.

In the drawing, the letter A designates a chair for children, and B is a play-table, which is connected to the table by means of swinging arms 0 O.

In the present example, we have used two of the said arms 0 0, one situated on each side of the chair A; but, if seen fit, one of the arms may be dispensed with.

The arms 0 O are hinged to the chair by a pivot, a, which forms part of a fastening device for retaining the arms in an upright position, as hereinafter described. By the swinging arms 0 U the play-table B is firmly connected to the chair, while the table is susceptible of being adjusted to a position immediately in front of the chair-seat D, as shown,

or to a lower position, as shown in Fig. 1 in dotted outline.

It will be readily understood that when the seat D. The lower portion of the arms is' flattened, and provided with a slot, 1), which has a lateral or outward opening, as shown. The slot 1) contains a pin, 0, which projects from the plate E, and the plate E is provided with a slot, 0?, (shown in Fig. 1' in dotted outline,) which contains the pin a, by which the arms are hinged. The object of the slot d is to permitof a vertical movement of the arms 0 G, sufficient to bring the opening of the slot b opposite the pin 0, when the arms may be swung outward on the pin a, for the pur pose of adjusting the table B to its lower position. When the slot 11 is placed on the pin 0, the arms 0 O and the table are firmly held in position.

It is obvious that the slots 1) d and pins 0 a may be transposed, or any other selected form of fastening devicesuch as, for instance, a set-scr'ewmay be used in lieu thereof, Without changing the character of our invention.

I What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, ,With a childs chair, A, of the table B, slotted'swinging arms (J (J, one or more, the pins 0 a, and the slotted plate E, substantially as herein set forth.

2. A fastening device composed of the slotted plate E, slotted arms 0 O, and pins 0 a, in combination with the table B, substantially as described.
