My invention relates particularly to machines for printing motion picture lilm although not limited to this use alone.
The 'invention contemplates, in the main,
s a photographic printing machine involving means whereby a pluralit of longitudinal sections of a photograp ically sensitized strip, such as an unexposed positive motion v icture film, may be exposed to' or printed rom different photographic rinting or negative strips, so that a plura ity of subjects,
preferably related, and particularly related visual sound and motion picture records, may
be printed on the positive or sensitized strip, 'and the main object of the'invention resides in the "provision of such a machine which is adjustable to vary the relation of the portions of the sensitized or positive strip upon which are printed the several subjects, with a view 2a toward the provision of such a machine which is adjustable to vary the lateral relation of the portions of the sensitized or positive strip upon which are printed the several subjects,
whereby to provide a machine of the above character which is adapted to meet a variety of conditions or requirements, and further with a. view toward convenience, hi h production, and quality, particularly in t e production of a single projection or record medium bearing related visual sound records and motion pictures for use in the exhibiting of the so-called talking motion pictures.
With this object in view my invention consists in certain features of novelty in the conlstruction, combination, and arrangement of parts by which the said object and certain other objects, hereinafter appearing are effected,`a1l as fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

An upper portion of the frame 2 forms a light tight vertical lamp chamber 3 wherein is mounted an incandescent electric lamp 4I of suitable design which provides the printing li ht for the above referred to exposure devlce. See-Figures 1 and 2. Y
Arranged on the frame 2 immediately to the rear of the lamp chamber 3 is a motor casing 5 and mounted within this casing with its shaft extending in parallelism with the focal axis, is an electric motor 6 for driving the machine.
The filament of the lamp 4 is centered with the focal axis of the above referred to exposure device, and the lamp chamber 3 is provided with a light opening, also alined` with said focal axis, across which is disposed a light diffusing element in the form of a ground glass 7. See Figure 2. The frame v 2 has a vertical transverse wall 8, in front of the light opening of the lamp chamber,

and carried with the frame11 immediately. in front of the transverse wall thereof is a vertically extending intermittent negative film feed guide 12 provided with a -light aperture-corresponding with the said focal axis.
Intermittent film feeding mechanism, generally indicated at 13v in Figure 2,- carried on the frame 2 is provided for intermittentlay feeding a negative motion picture bearing lm strip 14 in the guide 12. This feeding mechanism is inclusive of a cam shaft .15
which is disposedv in parallelism with said focal axis and is 'driven from the motor 6 through gearing and clutch mechanism generally indicated at 16. Vertical adjustment of the frame 11 with respect to the frame 2 effects the framing of the negative film 14 because the guide 12 is carried on the frame 11 while the feeding mechanism 13 is carried on the frame 2.
The frame 11 is provided with a support rail 17 which is disposed in parallelism with the said focal axis, and mounted on this rail for independent adjustment therealong are two supports 18 'and 19. See Figure l. Mounted on the outer support 18 is a frame 21 which is inclusive of a chamber 22 corresponding with the above noted focal axis.v
Intermittent film feeding mechanism, genverally indicated at 24 in Figure 2, carried on the frame 21 is provided for intermittently feeding an unexposed positive motion picv lture film strip 25 in the guide 23. This feedv ing mechanism is inclusive of a cam shaft 26l which iQ disposed in parallelism withl the aforementioned focal axis and is driven from and in timed relation with the hereinbeforo mentioned cam shaft 15 by means of drive vshaft means 27 partially shown in Figure 2,
this drive shaft means involving usual slip -oint means whereb the frame 21 may be adjusted along the rail 1.7or purposes hereinafter described A revolving segmental light shutter 28 is secured on the cam shaft 26 and sweeps over the exposure aperture of the guide 23 to intermittentlyinterrupt exposure of the positive film 25 during intermittent movement thereof in the guide23 effected byrotation of the cam shaft 26 forming a part of the intermittent feeding mechanism 24, the intermittent feeding mechanism 13 being timed with the feeding mechanism 24 to move the negative film 14 in the guide 12 while the shutter 28 interrupts exposure of the positive film 25 in the guide 23.
The hereinbefore mentioned support 19, which is adjustable along the4 support rail 17 of the frame 11 and longitudinally of the hereinbefore mentioned focal axis, is provided at its upper end with a tubular formation 31 which is disposed correspondingly with the said focal axis and extends therefrom in the direction of the frame 21 and telescopically extends into the chamber 22 with its extended end for longitudinal movement with respect thereto. See Figure 1. Mounted on the support member 19, at the other end i of the tubular formation 31, for vertical movement with respect thereto normal to the said focal axis, by means of spaced opposing slide ,bearings 32 disposed on opposite sides of this tubular formation, is a support or bear'- ing member 33 providedwith a bore 34 therethrough surrounding the said focal axis. See Figures 1 and 5. The support member 33 is adjusted with respect to the support member 19 along the slide bearings 32 by a screw adjustment means generally indicated at 35 in Figure 5.
Mounted on the support member 33, on the side-thereof facing the projection device, for horizontal movement with respect thereto normal to the said focal axis and normal to the adjusting movement of this support member, by means of spaced opposing slide bearings 36 disposed onopposite sides of the said focal axis, is a support member 37 provided with a bore 38 therethrough surrounding the said focal axis. See Figures 1 and 5. The
vsupport member 37 is provided with an indicating dial flange 39 disposed normal to the said focal axis and facing forwardly, and the support member 37 is adjusted with respect to the support member 33 along the side bearings 36 by a screw adjustment means including a screw 41 screwthreaded through the dial flange 39 in parallelism with the slide bearings 36.
Secured on the side ofthe support memmomes ber 37 facing'the rojectioiidevice is a'tubular member 42 orming a portion of this support member and ydisposed coaxially with the bore 438 thereof. See Figures 1 and 5. Screwthreaded into the bore 38 of the support member 38 and projecting therefrom in the bore of the tubular member 42 is an image forming or photographic lens 43 of a usual type'providedwith an adjustable iris mechanism which isv inclusive-0f an external ring 44 angularly movable With respectJ to the body of the lens for adjusting the iris mechanism.
Adjustment of the ring 44 is controlled from the exterior ofthe support member 37 and the tubular member 42 by an exterior knob 45 secured on the outer end of a revoluble shaft 46 disposed coaxially with the dial flange and operatively connected with the ring 44 by means of bevel gearing 47. A dial 48 secured on the shaft 46 is disposed on the outside of the dial iange 39 and cooperates with a stationary pointer 49 secured on the dial fla-nge to indicate adjustment of the iris mechanism of the lens 43.
A telescopic tubular structure 51 surrounds `the said focal axis and extends between the projection or negative film guide 12 and the tubular member 42, thus completing the enclosure of the. printing light path between the negative guide 12 and the positive guide 23, this tubular structure 51 being provided with a: side opening formation 52 across which is disposed a ruby glass 53 for the inspection of the negative film at the aperture of the guide 12. ln addition the tubular light enclosing formation between the guides 12 and 23 vis extended to the rear of the guide 23, as designated at 54, across which is disposed a ruby glass 55 for the inspection ofthe image on the positive film at the aperture of the guide 23.
The above described exposure device is of the space printing type and is adapted for reduction printing in order to print the standard width picture of the standard width negative film 14 upon a sect-ion of lesser Width of the standard width positive film 25` thus leaving another longitudinal section of the positive film imprinted for the printing thereon of another subject, such as a visual sound record related to the motion picture. In order that the section of the film not printed in this exposure device is not exposed therein, the ex osure aperture of the positive film guide 13 is reduced to conform to the size of the picture printed on the positive film from the negative film 14.

The plate shown in Figure 10 has a reduced exposure aperture in Figure 12 provides for the printing of the motion picture on the positive film as shown at 62 in Figure 15, and the use of the plate shownv in Figure 11 provides for the printing of the motion picture on the positive film as shown at 63 in Figure 16. i In adjusting the above described exposure device in correspondence With the use of a. desired aperture plate, the support members 18 and 19, carrying the lens 43 and the positive exposure guide 23, are adjusted along the support rail 17 to adjustably position the lens 43 and the guide 23 to effect the proper picture size and lens focus, and the support 37 is adjusted laterally along the slide bearings 36 to adj ustably position the lens transversely to effect the proper transverse disposition of the projected picture to correspond with the exposure aperture of the guide 23.
ln order that an additional record, such as a visual sound record preferably related with the motion picture printed upon the positivel film 25, may be printed upon the longitudinal section of the positive film not exposed by the aforementioned exposure device, an additional exposure device is provided, which will now be described.
Disposed at a lower point on the frame 2 and to one side of the pedestal 1 is a revoluble horizontal shaft 64 which projects forwardly from the frame 2. See Figures 1, 3 and 4. Formed on this shaft immediately forward of the frame 2 is a peripherally toothed wheel 65. The shaft 64 projects forwardly of the Wheel 65, and secured on the forwardly projecting end of this shaft is a second peripherally toothed wheel 66 forming with the. wheel 65 and theportion of the shaft 64 between these wheels a film sprocket. sprocket constitutes a consta-nt feed sprocket and is driven from the cam shaft 26 in timed relation therewith through a gear and shaft driving train 67 which is inclusive of a gear 68 secured on the shaft 64 within an enclosure of the frame 2. See Figures 2, 3, 4 and 9.

A slide block 81 is engaged in the slide opening 79 for removal therefrom, this blocky being releasably held in position in the` slide opening by a latch spring 82. See Figures 3, 4, and 7 The slide block 81 overlies the light passage 78 and is provided with a pair of diagonally disposed and transversely spaced light passages 83 therethrough and separated by a partition 84' and extending upwardly from the light passage 78 to points overlying the shaft 64. Another pair oi" transversely spaced light passages 85 in the structure 71 and separated by a partition 86 extend upwardly from the upper ends of respective of the passages 83 to the upper suri'ace of the structure 71 which is disposed on a horizontal chord of the wheels 65 and 66.
Secured on the slide block 81 and disposed in respective of the light passages 83 is a pair of glass reflecting prisms 87 of parallelogram form .whiehreflect printing light, transniitted thereto from the lamp 77 through the light passage 78, upwardly through respective of the light passages 85, it being observed that .the intermediate angling of the light passages avoids the shaft 64 and that completion of the angled portion of the passages by the removable slide block 8l on which are mounted the reflecting prisms 87 provides a desirable structure affording access to the prisms.
Mounted on suitable slide bearings 88 at respective sides of the lower sui-tace of the slide block 81 are two shutters 89 which are movable independently in said slide bearings into and out of position across the respective lightv passages 88 to cut off the printing light thereto for purposes hereinafter described.` See Figures 7 and 8. These shutters are manipulated when the slide block 81 is removed from theslide opening 7 9.v Y
Secured on the aforementioned upperhorizontal surface of the struct-ure 7K1 is an inner f 't film face guide member 91. See l"`igure.` s`- 3` 4 and 6. The intermediate portion 'of the`V upper or film guiding face thereof is curved correspondingly wit-h the periphcries' of thewheels and 66 while the end portions'of this guiding `face extend tangentially with respectV to @said intermediate curved portion. Another film face guide member 92 is pivoted to the frame 2.as designated at 93, for movement. into and out of position overlying the face 'guide member 91` the guide member 92 being releasably/y held in said position b v a spring'device 94 cooperating with an adjustable stop device 95 between the `frame 2 and this guide member.y See Figures 3, 4 and 9. l v
When the guide member 92 is so positioned it forms with the guide members 91 a film guide disposed for guiding superposed films engaged on the sprocket including the wheels i 65 andy 66. Accordingly the lower face of the with the upper face ofthe' guide member 91, and the guide member 92 includes a movable block 96 forming the intermediate portion of the guide surface and upon which an adjustable spring pressure device, generally indicated at 97. acts to effect a desired pressure on the film in the guide.
rlhe guide member 91. is narrower than the space between the flanges 69 ofthe wheels 65 and 66 and is equally spaced therefrom. so that printing Vlight projected upwardly through the light passages 85 of the structure 71 plays on the portions of the film in the guide, comprising the guide members 91 and 92, between the guide member 91 and the flanges 69 for printing these portions of a positive film overlying a negative film in this guide. `When it is desired to expose but one of these sections of the films in this guide one of the shutters 89 is closed to cut ofi" the printing light from its respective light passage 85 and space between the flange 69 of the corresponding sprocket wheel 65 or 66.
Thus are .provided two transversely arranged or spaced exposure apertures in the guide comprising the guide members 91 and 92, and in order that the printing light thereat may be varied the following is provided. See Figures 3, 4 and 6.
Pairs of arcuate shutter members 161 are disposed between the guide member 91 and the Wheels-65 and 66, and each pair is arranged on opposite sides of the respective light passage 85 of the structure 71, and these shutter members are movable longitudinally of the guide, comprising the guide members 91 and 92, and corresponding with the periphery of the wheels 65 or 66 to var v i the corresponding exposure -opening of the L outer arcuate surfaces thereof shouldered, as
guide. These shutter members 101 have the designated at 102, to correspond` with the undercut of the wheels and 66 provided by the flanges 69 thereof, and are adjustably positioned in the said' movement thereof by means of headed screws 103 engaged in shouldered slots 104, through the shutter mem'- bers 101, and screwthreaded into the guide member 91.v
The exposure device including the guide comprising the guide members 91 and 92 is adapted to print the longitudinal section or sections of the positive film 25 not printed in the exposure guide including the guides 12 and 23 from a second standard negative film strip 105 which preferably bears a visual sound record or records. rilhus, Where one subject such as the motion picture is printed upon the section 61 of the positive film, see Figure 14, the other subject orsound record is printed upon the section 106 of the positive film, the proper shutter 89 being closed to prevent double exposure of the corresponding section of the positive film.
Where one subject such as the motion pic` ture is printed upon the section 62 `of the positive film, see Figure 15, the othersubject or sound yrecord is printed upon the section 107 of the positive film, the proper shutter 89 being closed to prevent double exposure of the corresponding section of the positive film.
Where one subject such as the motion picture is printed upon the section 63 of the positive film, see Figure 16, the other subject or subjects, such as a sound record or records, is or are printed upon the sections 108 of the positive film, both of the shutters 89 being open in this case.
Thus are provided two devices for expos-` ing different longitudinal sections of the positive film 25 in printing relation respectively with the negative lms 14 and 105 proessively therealong, each of said exposure evices being adapted to prevent exposure thereby of the portion of the ositive film printed by the other, the fee in devices eing driven in timed relation rom the motor 6 for the rogressive printing along the positive film simultaneously by the negative films 14 and 105. i
The films are carried and fed to and from the hereinabove mentioned exposure guides in the following manner. See Figures 1 and 13.
The negative film 14is fed from a feed spool 111 to an upper constant feed sprocket 112, thence through a compensating loop to the upper end of the guide 12 in which it is fed downwardly by the intermittent feed mechanism 13, thence from the lower end of this guide through a compensating loop to a lower constant feed sprocket 113, and finally to a take up spool 114.

thence through the exposure guide, 4comprising the guide members 91 and 92, through which it is fed by the constant feed sprocket including the wheels 65 and 66, thence to a constant feed sprocket 117', thence through a compensating loop to the lower end of the guide 23 in which it is fed upwardly by the intermittent feed mechanism 24, thence from the upper end of this guide 23 through a compensating loop to a constant feed sprocket 118, and finally to a take up spool 119.
The negative film 105 is fed from a feed spool 121 to the constant feed sprocket 116, thence through the exposure guide, comprising the guide members 91 and 92, through which it is fed in printing relation with the positive film 25 by the constant feed sprocket including the wheels 65 and 66, thence to a "constant feed sprocket 1.22, and finally to a take up spool 123.
The constant feed sprockets 112,113, 116, 117, 118 and 122 are all driven from the motor 6 in timed relation with the intermittent feeding mechanisms 13 and 24 and the constant feed sprocket comprising the Wheels 65 and 66 by suitable driving mechanism unnecessary to be described, and the take up spools 114, 119 and 123 are driven from the motor 6 by mechanism which is inclusive of belts 124 which accommodate for the several take up spools.'
It is to be observed that as shown the film` for which the machine is adapted is standard motion picture film and that the motion picture printed thereon is comparatively wide as compared with the width of the sound record printed thereon. It will be further observed that the aforementioned space printing device which prints the motion picture isadaptable for printing a full size motion picture on the positive film, in which casel the sound recordprinting device is not use f Y. Vhile I have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, but
aving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following:
1. In a photographic printin machine the combination with a revolub e film feed sprocket comprising two axially spaced wheels and an axial shaft extending therebetween, of a film guide disposed for guiding superposed films engaged on said ,sprocket and provided with an ex osure aperture between said wheels and facing inwardly of the sprocket, closed light passage means between said wheels and leading to said exposure the. ang
aperture and angled to avoid said shaft and includin a removable structure completing ged portion thereof, and re means carried on said removable structure for reflecting printing light through said passage means to said exposure aperture.
2. In a photographic printing machine the combination with a revoluble film feed sprocket comprising two 'axially spaced wheels and an axial shaft extending therebetween, of a film guide disposed for guiding -superposed films engaged on said sprocket and provided with an ex osure aperture between said wheels and acing radially inwardly of the sprocket, closed light passage means between said wheels and leading to said exposure aperture from the opposite side of said sprocket and intermediately angled to avoid said shaft and including a removablek structure completing the angled portion thereof, and a single glass reflecting prism of parallelogram form mounted on said removable structure for reflecting printing light through said passage means to said exposure aperture. 3. In a photographic printing machine the combination with a revoluble film feed sprocket comprising two axially spaced wheels and an axial shaft extending'v therebetween, of a film guide disposed for guiding superposed films engagedA on said sprocket and provided with two transversely arranged exposure apertures between said wheels and facing inwardly of the sprocket, closed passage means providing two independent closed passages between said wheels and leading to respective of said exposure apertures and angled to avoid said shaft, reflecting means within said closed passages for reflecting printing light to said exposure apertures, and means for selectively cutting olf printing light to said exposure apertures.
4. In a photographic printing machine the combination with a revoluble film feed sprocket comprising two axially spaced wheels and an axial shaft extending therebetween, of a film guide disposed forvguiding superposed films engaged on said sprocket andprovided with two transversely spaced exposure apertures between said wheels and 'facing inwardly of the sprocket, closed passage means providing two independent closed 4passages between said wheels and leading to respective of said exposure apertures and angled to avoid said shaft and including a removable structure completing the an led portion thereof, reflecting means carrie on said removable structure for reflecting printing light through said passage means to respective of said exposure apertures, and shutter means carried. on saidv removable structure for selectively cutting ofi:l the printing light to said exposure openings, c
5. In a photographic printing machine the combination with a revoluble film feed ecting sprocket comprising twoaxially spaced wheels and an axial shaft extending therebetween, of a film guidedisposed for guiding superposed films engaged on said sprocket and provided with two transversely spaced exposure apertures between said wheels andincluding a removable structure completing the angled portion thereof, a pair of glass reflecting prisms of parallelogram form mounted on said removable structure for reliecting printing light through respective of said passages to said exposure apertures and a pair of independently movable shutters carried on said removable structurefor cutting off the printing light to respective of said exposure apertures.
6. In a photographic printing machine the combination with a revoluble feed sprocket wheel, of a film guide associated therewith including an'inner face guide member spaced axially from said wheel to form an exposure opening, an arcuate shutter member dis osed correspondingly with the periphery o said sprocket wheel and between the same and said guide member and movable correspondingly to vary said exposure opening, and means for securing said shutter member with said guide memberand adapted to permit said adjustment of said shutter member.
7 In a photographic printing machine the combination with a revoluble feed sprocket wheel undercut on one side, of a film guide associated therewith 'including an inner face ter member dis osed correspondingly with the periphery o said sprocket Wheel and between the same and said guide member and having the outer surface thereof shouldered to correspond with the undercut of the wheel, and headed screws engaged in shouldered slots through said shutter member and screwthreaded into said guide member whereby said shutter member is 'adjustable corresponding with the periphery of said wheel to vary said exposure opening.

In a photographic println machine the v combination with a revolub e film feed sprocket including two axially spaced wheels, of a film guide disposed for guiding superposed films engaged on said sprocket and including an inner face guide member disposed between and spaced from said wheels to form exposure openings, shutter members between sald guide member and respective sprockets and movable longitudinally of said guide for varying said exposure openings and means for adjustably positioning said shutter mem bers in their said movement. v
