A Home y Patented May 1 9, 1931 UNITED STATES JOHN SOHNQOF DEADWOOD, SOUTH DAKOTA.
Application filed October 14,
' of fastening straps so related that the variw ous advantages and features of novelty resident in the invention are accomplished in a manner which will 'be more fully understood as the description of the same is set forth in this specification. x 1
Itis an object of this invention to provide a sandal of the type described, which is attractive, light in weight, which may be quickly and easily and cheaply manufactured, and is admirabl composed and arranged to conform to t e idea of the invention.
I These and other objects, the nature of the invention, its composition and arrangement and combination of parts, will be readily as understood by any one acquainted with the art to which this invention relates upon consulting the following descriptions of the drawings, in which:-
' Figure 1 1s a general perspective view of so my improved sandal.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section therethrough. y
- Figure 3 is a perspective view of the innersole associated therewith.
3 5 Figure 4 is" a plan view of the single 1 blank from which the sandal is formed.
' Referring in detail to the drawings, it
will be seen that a sole portion generally indicated 5 has a gradually reduced forward I portion 6 which merges into a strap 7 which is adapted ,to be b1011%l 1t back-and over the foot'as shown in igure 1. At .each side of the forward portion of the sole rtion of the blank are provided'o'ppositely 48 ongitudinally projecting straps 8; whie wings which mounting 1930;, Serial No. 488,868.
are adapted to be disposed as subsequently described. Asimilar pair of straps 9 having a wider base than the stra s 8 lead from the side portion vof the so e portion 5. Adjacent the heel portion 10 are a pair of laterally projecting short straps 11, and
a pair of wings 12 are fashioned at the rear portion of the heel portion 10 and they are of somewhat curvate formation as seen in Figure 4, they form a covering for the 5 side of the heel ortion of the foot as hereinafter describe Just to the rear of the 12 are laterally projecting straps 13 are adapted to be engaged about the ankle of the foot, as they are associated on with a pair of parallel straps 14 which are also to be disposed aboutthe ankle of the foot and above the straps 13, and said straps are connected by a web portion 15 which is adapted to engage the rear upper portion of 05 the ankle. Referring to Fi res 1 and 2 .it willbe seen that the bla in Fi re 4 belowthe' heel portion 10 is perpen icularly erected,v so that the wings the sides of the heel portion 10 on each side thereof. Slits 16 are made in the said wings 12, and the straps 11 are (projected perpendicularly, and through sai slits and further pgrpendicularly bent about one of the straps 13, after through a slit .17. therein, and on e of the sandal the strap 11 is permasecured tothe strap 13 by a fastener a button 18=as shown in. Figure 80 1. One of the straps'13 is made longer than passin one si nently the other and it is arranged as seen 'in Figure 1 to pass across the instep of the foot, and is provided with a buttonhole 19 for engaging upon the button 18. 14 are securedabout the ankle by a buttoning arran ment generally indicated 20 at one side 0 the ankle.

extended to meet and to The straps 8 is returned over the toes, and the strap 7 is extended backwardly over the foot and then upwardly where itis provided with a pair of slits 21 which permit it to be slipped upon the longer ofthe straps 14, after having assed through a slit in the front part of t e straps 13. The straps 8 are then 7 brought upwardly and inwardly over the strap 7 ,r and then the straps 9 are brought upwardly and inwardly to cross the point of intersection of the straps 7 and 8, at which point of intersection they are secured together by afastener carrying an external ornamental button as indicated at 22. An inner sole 23 is provided and placed upon the sole portion 5 of the blank and suitably secured thereto: It should be stated that the lower portion of the wings 12 are bent inwardly between the inner sole and the sole portion 5 and secured by means of stitching 26 which runs through the said sole portion 5. A slit is provided for admitting the strap 11, the function and arrangement of which has already been described.
It is now thought to be obviousthat I have provided a simple and inexpensive and highly attractive as well as comfortable sandal of new and novel type possessing advantages not heretofore known or practiced, and while I have set out herein specifically an example of my improved sandal, it is .to be distinctly understood that I do not desire to limit the application of the invention to said particular example, but any change or changes may be made in material and structure and arrangement of parts consistent with the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is z- 1. 'A sandal of the type described formed from a single blank of material, and provided with a separate inner sole, said blank comprisinga sole portion, aheel engaging portion IlSlllg from the rear of the sole portion and provided with a plurality of ankle encircling straps, and portions thereof for engaging the sides of the heel; and a plurality-of straps for engaging the toe portion of the foot and consisting of a'central strap leading from the forward end of the sole portion and brought back over the foot to en age with the ankle encircling straps,
